Gatlin among ex-Tennessee players to work out for scouts

Associated Press

Updated: March 12, 2008, 6:46 PM ET
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Olympic sprint champion Justin Gatlin showed off his skills to NFL scouts Wednesday during Tennessee's pro timing day.
Gatlin is the reigning Olympic 100-meter gold medalist. He received a potential eight-year ban for doping violations, but that ban was reduced to four years.
He is appealing the ban in hopes of voiding the first of his two doping violations to be allowed to compete this summer in the Beijing Games.
Gatlin tested positive for excessive levels of testosterone at the Kansas Relays in 2006, his second doping offense. The first came in 2001 when Gatlin tested positive for amphetamines, part of a prescribed medication he was taking for attention deficit disorder.
Gatlin was among 14 former Tennessee players to participate in the pro timing event on Wednesday, which was closed to the public.
The NFL draft is April 26-27.

Why would we want someone who has never played football and has already been busted for roids? NO THANKS

I'd like some team to give him a workout just so we could see what his 40 time was lol.

The only thing I would even consider is signing him as an undrafted rookie free agent, bringing him to camp, and maybe putting him on the practice squad to see if he can learn to run past the CB on a fly pattern and actually go get the ball. I'd give him 1 year on the practice squad and if he wasn't good enough to make the team in year 2, get rid of him.

I can't see anything wrong with giving a guy with that kind of speed a minimum contract just to see what he could do in camp. A lot of track guys have contributed in the nfl, at the very least as a kickoff returner.

Cowboys drafted Carl Lewis in the 12th round in '84 without ever playing football. If they tested for steroids back then, he may have been busted too! :laugh2:

I'm pretty damn happy about the Texas Rangers getting Josh Hamilton. If he can keep his issues under control, he is one of those "five tool" players like A-Rod and very few others are.

Plus, he is just a better person than A-Rod.

He doesn't have a problem. He seems to know exactly how and where to get banned substances.

Not with a minimum contract, if Ware, Romo, or Barber tested positive for something I wouldn't want to cut them either.

The difference is they are football players not track stars and that min contract would take away a roster spot from a real football player.

Color me uninterested in Justin Gatlin. We already have one project in Stanback.
