Cowboys face toughest offseason
February, 18, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas – More than a few times we have talked about all of the difficult decisions the Dallas Cowboys face this offseason.

ESPN Insider Mike Sando believes the Cowboys have the most challenging offseason of any team in the NFL.

The other four teams Sando listed are the Oakland Raiders, Miami Dolphins, Washington Commanders and Carolina Panthers. The Raiders have a ton of cap space but not a lot of talent. The Dolphins have to deal with the Richie Incognito/Jonathan Martin mess but have pieces in place to compete. The Commanders have a new coaching staff in place but the hope of Robert Griffin III regaining form. The Panthers have free-agent decisions to make but have the look of a team that can continue as playoff contenders.

The Cowboys?

Here’s what Sando wrote:

He's right. Things look grim for massive improvement this offseason. Though losing Spencer isn't really a factor since he gave us nothing last season.

We've know this for a long time. It's like saying the earth is round.

Look at how terrible our defensive talent is. Yet somehow this clown Jerry manages to be over the cap by so much. Just sad...

I would be all for tearing it down and starting over ... but i don't trust Jerry to draft worth a crap.

I agree with the tear it down & just start over theory.

They weren't going anywhere anyway.

Do you trust Jerry to draft well enough to build a winner? I think he needs to tear it all up and money whip Saban to come draft and coach.

Let go of the delusions and pride, and this off-season is not challenging in the slightest.

Sure, unpopular decisions would need to be executed, but it's not like the direction we need to go is hard to fathom.

Most definitely, a fork in the road has emerged.
What path is Jerry going to take?

Rebuild with a 2 to 3 year business model approach OR go all in in the 'win-in' philosophy (reaches in the draft, agreeing to bad contracts with aging vets, etc.).

No I don't trust Jerry to build a winner. He'll never do that without a great coach. If I were Nick Saban I wouldn't take Jerry's calls if he even were to call. He has the better job. They let him do what he wants & he's super successful. I'd let that be & enjoy the millions he is already making.

Our old players will be 1 year older each year we hang on to them. guys like DW could be cap saving casualties that actually help the team. Plenty of late round defensive linemen that are economical rotation guys. Offer our guys Hatcher & Spencer cheap contracts and be ready to let them walk.

He will try to win now as long as he has a QB he feels can get them their. Granted that gets highly debated around here if Romo can help lead this team to a championship but the only opinion that matters on that is the franchise view of Romo.
Jerry has given his views on this and so has Stephen so as long as they continue to think Romo can do the job Dallas will try to win now.

I dont see why there cant be massive improvement if this team can by some miracle just stay healthy. Add a few peices in the draft. You have to remember this was a playoff contending team with a bunch of street guys on defense. They were 1 drive from being in the playoffs. IMO you improve the DL play and thats a massive improvement for the defense, but you get that pressure you didnt last yr, and you have more turnovers that we saw at the begining of the yr. Dallas was one of the top defenses in turnovers for the first half of the season.

A more aggressive offensive scheme added with some man defense will do wonders for this team aswell.

Always suspected you were Jerry (or at least a member of his family). No one else could say this with a straight face.
