Cowboys need to be patient in free agency

Here are the moves the Dallas Cowboys should consider when free agency opens at 4 p.m. ET Wednesday:

Priority No. 1: Let the market come to them. Spending in the first week of free agency is largely out of control. Good players get great-player money. The Cowboys last did this in 2012, when they signed Brandon Carr to a five-year, $50 million deal. They should let other teams overspend for players and then shop wisely, and they have done that the past few years.

Priority No. 2: Go after Eric Weddle. Am I contradicting myself? Perhaps, because Weddle won’t come cheap despite his age (31). He would, however, fill a gap in the Cowboys’ defense for a playmaker in the secondary and another leader on the unit. If he signs, that would likely mean Byron Jones would shift back to cornerback or the Cowboys would have to decide on Barry Church, who is scheduled to earn $4.25 million in 2016. Paying for intangibles is a tricky deal in free agency, but Weddle woudl bring a lot to the table.

What has waiting in free agency ever done for Dallas besides ending up with scraps????

I say cut Carr and Church and go after Janoris Jenkins and George Iloka;)

Stephen and Jerry already nixed your idea and will wait about 10 days before they get into the FA business with
the exception of signing their own FA that they want to keep. Until they think they have replacements for Carr
and Church in hand, don't expect any cuts to be coming.

Standard Cowboys....Show up late to the dance....Take home the fat girl.:(

And I hate the idea of signing a 31 year old undersized safety.....

weren't our own free agents on a team that won 4 games last year with very little impact I say if they want to win target free agents that you want and go after them at least Denver figured it out.

Reading Priority Number Four (4) of the article made me cringe.

Archer can't be serious. Jack Crawford I'm ok with but the other two I totally disagree with.

Surprised there was no mention of re-signing Lance Dunbar.

Undersized, yes, but he's been extremely durable throughout his career. He's missed 7 games in 9 seasons.

Im confident in whatever decision they make, to sign early and overspend or wait and sign second tier guys, or decide not to pay their own home grown guys, to whatever they do.............................

most of the decisions will be marginally wrong to outright wrong...................

Waiting gets you garbage.

Denver went out and signed Talib, Ware and TJ Ward In one off season. Super Bowl champs two years later.

2013 Seahawks signed Avril, Bennett and traded for Harvin they won the Super Bowl that season.

Dallas needs to get a couple of guys who will be starters week one and than they can wait on some of the crumbs later.

Mario Williams and George Iloka come to mind.

I agree about Weddle. Get him for a couple of years to play alongside Jones and that's the best the safety positon has looked in awhile. I know he's 31 but he's an upgrade over Church and Wilcox. And it isn't going to take much to be better then Wilcox. He was painful to watch last year

Dear Todd: Years after year I see Sir Jones bring in an FA veteran -- you know the type: aging, expensive, on the downward slope.
I get so tired of this.
I say we try something radical: work the draft and subsequent several years for a team composed of age-similar athletes we can develop.
FA really means Fat Athletes as to body bulk and salary demands.
