Archer: Cowboys need to be patient in free agency

Draft Ramsey{if available)
Sign Jenkins
Resign Mo
O Scan & Jones are back

Suddenly you eliminate all needs back there

Draft some DT & Edge guys.... D looks good

Lamar Miller & Sean Smith are the 2 guys I hope Jerry signs this offseason. It'd be nice if Ramsey fell to 4 & we had O.Scan-Smith-Ramsey-Jones.

What has waiting in free agency ever done for Dallas besides ending up with scraps????

I say cut Carr and Church and go after Janoris Jenkins and George Iloka;)

Would be a very athletic tandem at safety with Iloka and Byron.

I wouldn't hate Jenkins but he can be feast or famine. Would prefer Casey Heyward.

Here are the moves the Dallas Cowboys should consider when free agency opens at 4 p.m. ET Wednesday:

Priority No. 1: Let the market come to them. Spending in the first week of free agency is largely out of control. Good players get great-player money. The Cowboys last did this in 2012, when they signed Brandon Carr to a five-year, $50 million deal. They should let other teams overspend for players and then shop wisely, and they have done that the past few years.

Priority No. 2: Go after Eric Weddle. Am I contradicting myself? Perhaps, because Weddle won’t come cheap despite his age (31). He would, however, fill a gap in the Cowboys’ defense for a playmaker in the secondary and another leader on the unit. If he signs, that would likely mean Byron Jones would shift back to cornerback or the Cowboys would have to decide on Barry Church, who is scheduled to earn $4.25 million in 2016. Paying for intangibles is a tricky deal in free agency, but Weddle woudl bring a lot to the table.

Archer lists signing Nick Hayden back as a "priority".

Yep, wait for the hand me downs. With the exception of a couple guys, where has this ever gotten us?

The Boys currently have about $8 million and could get about $6 million more if they cut Carr. It would be nice if we didn't have to restructure many contracts this free agency. But I believe the Boys should look towards guys like Lamar Miller, George Iloka, Casey Hayward or Sean Smith. These guys won't come cheap, but they won't be terribly expensive either. Miller needs to be a prime target and if we can snatch him for about 4/5 years for 20/25 million, you gotta do it. He's only 24 (gonna be 25 when the season starts) and because of Miami's poor ways of utilizing him, he doesn't have much wear and tear on his body. I imagine he would want to come to Dallas too, especially since he knows what Murray did behind this line in 2014 and what even McFadden did last year. After Miller, either of the rest of three would be an upgrade at that position so the Cowboys can take their pick with them.

I agree they need to be patient, but they also need to be a little aggressive in pursuing some of these guys available. If Jerry truly believes Romo has a couple years left, then he needs to put talent around him and like the Broncos proved, free agency can be the way go if you're smart in signing the right players.

Saved them money and dead money in the end. I do believe there are players who you make a play for but by and large FA allows you to fill holes with competent players.

it's weird that the Cowboys spend so much time talking about win now, Romo, etc. and then there is all this talk about patience or sitting out free agency. Kind of a mixed message.

Nailed it Chris! Our problem now is Stephen is a cheapskate. Jerry was over the top with contracts and his son is cheap. We need something in the middle.

So you're saying we need a real GM who knows what they're doing ?

Yeah, good luck with that while the jones boys are around

I was hoping McClay would be that guy, but he likes finding diamond in the rough players that failed elsewhere and are under 28!!

Amazing to me how many of you are so focused on spending all of this $ on secondary when we have no pass rush. Fix the d line and the rest of the d will fall in place. Spending $ on the secondary without making major upgrades to the d line would be a huge waste

With this deep Dline draft.... We can use 2nd & later picks.....

Could not agree with you more

Out DL has 2 starters currently
The other 3 positions have huge holes

We need 1 starter in FA and 2 picks in the draft along the DL

I'm not sure this FO will address these needs in even a halfway decent fashion

I fully expect them to stupidly focus on getting CBs and then being confused when we are a middling defense

1st, This is not a deep draft for DE's...at all.
2nd, relying on rookies to play key roles on the d line is a horrible idea. Especially 3rd rounders or later.

I'm all for signing Mario. He will change this D. 10 sack guy will be a major improvement. We haven't had one in 2 years.
