I could definitely see that as a possibility. I know Heath has taken a lot of heat around here but there is just something I like about the kid. The dude is a freak athlete. I think he's gotten a lot more comfortable in the system and is on the cusp of being a solid contributor. If he doesn't earn the spot, I'll trust that coaches are making the right decision but I hope he gets a legit shot to take one of those safety spots (Byron is a lock) until the team makes a real commitment to the position either in the draft or FA.

Heath took heat because he was raw as rain and was played too early. He'd be in the perfect position and blow it anyway.
He was all athlete with no actual football skill or instinct(catching, turning, anything).
But he's developed into a pretty good player.

I would definitely consider letting Wilcox and Church battle for one spot.
Both guy are overpaid. One likely should go if everyone else is healthy.
Church is decent but 4+MM is a lot for what may be the weakest secondary starter.

If Frazier shows anything it's a good bet Wilcox is gone. If he shows a lot, both he and Church could be gone. I doubt Church loses his job this season.

Can't argue with any of that but the fact that he was played too early is on the coaches, not Heath, for not having any quality depth. Fortunately, for Heath, that early playing time and subsequent failure has given him valuable time and taught some tough lessons. I hope he gets a legit shot to capitalize.

Church probably sticks around this season just because of his experience and dependability (he hasn't missed much playing time in his tenure, here). It will be his last, however, and it wouldn't break my heart to see him get beat out by either Frazier or Heath in TC.

Church is still on the roster? No thanks.

Also, I've known this but when you look at the QB depth and see Kellen Moore and Dak Prescott it just makes me sad. How did we go from Stephen saying the back-up QB spot was one of our top priorities to Kellen Moore and Dak Prescott. If Romo goes down, this team might not score a point. Well, maybe Bailey will kick some really long field goals.

fans see heath tip a pass that lands in a WRs hands for a TD they are going to to blame him, not coaching.
it just is what it is.

fans largely hated greg ellis because he wasn't randy moss.
now we are looking for an 8 sack a year guy who can avoid suspension to give 70 mil to.

Perhaps ... but Church cost 2.5 mil more, is older and had less athleticism.
Wilcox is maddeningly clueless but he's cheaper and younger.
You might keep Wilcox as a 3rd safety but if Church can't start he is gone.

Very much hope pne of the young guys is better than both.

Church is the better player. And he's surprisingly only a year older than Wilcox. He's more expensive, and they're both gone next season, so it'll be interesting to see what the team does. My bet is they keep the team captain, let JJ walk, and we're scrambling for DBs next offseason because we didn't take it seriously enough this year because we needed a RB and a drop-footed MIKE.

Wilcox is 3 years younger.

I'm not happy that Barry is making that much, I pretty much hated it all off-season.

But, he'll be the starter at SS, and given the alternatives its probably for the best. Unless Heath really shows up.

I think Frazier was a hedge for next year. He's athletic and a big hitter supposedly, but I don't see him beating out the other guys this year.

JJ is as good as gone, imo. And i ain't mad at it.

Can't tackle and for whatever reason, stopped trying last season. Oh, and can't play zone to save his life.

YR

He breaks down in space just fine. He does fine in deep zones. When breaking on balls from short zones, he takes bad angles is the main issue which leads whiffs and the like but your universal condemnation is false IMO.

Wilcox is in real trouble this camp. He's been demoted, his troubles with angles are well documented, and he's not a particularly strong ST player on the last year of a deal on a team with younger resources who can contribute there. He's likely gone failing an injury somewhere in front of him.

Wilber's not a great player by any stretch, but he's a good all around contributor the coaches reportedly love. He's not going anywhere.

I saw Wilcox on TCL playing with Jones and the 1s. It looked to me like the SS spot was being rotated cause Heath saw time out there as well. Jones being a better FS than Wilcox doesn't make Church one whit better; had Church been able to play FS -he cannot- then he would have been 'demoted' too. Wilcox plays all the ST.

The point you're avoiding is money where Church makes $4.25m to Wilcox's $1.66. It also appears to me that Church is losing some of that short area quickness. He started whiffing last year too for all the confirmation bias.

Wilber is one of the few people that can play SAM competently and he can play DE in an emergency. He also plays all the teams. Unless Wilson and someone else emerges at SAM Wilber has a spot as a backup.

I would keep WR Jones

I agree with Todd Archer in that I don't see the team keeping 6 WRs.

TE Jason Witten is the real #2 WR behind Dez Almighty, though Cole Beasley will challenge for second in receptions this season. Terrance Williams is a nice complimentary receiver when Dez is on the field and Brice Butler will be afforded the opportunity to carve out a role. Lucky Whitehead, a returner who also brings unique mismatch possibilities on offense, will round the group out.

Andy Jones, Chris Brown, Ed Eagan, Rodney Smith and Vince Mayle all have Practice Squad eligibility.

Making the 53 would likely require a real breakout performance and/or an injury to a regular.

Mayle and one of the rookies will probably open the season on the Practice Squad.
