Heath is much smaller than Wilcox. Heath ran a 4.65 40-time compared to Wilcox's 4.57 40-time. Heath has a 37" vertical to Wilcox's 35" vertical. So, it has nothing to do with the color of their skin. I think Heath is a good athlete, but he's a smaller guy. He's far better of an athlete than Barry Church, Keith Davis, and the other slugs we've had at safety over the years.

I've read that he was faster than that.

A motivated Heath agreed to sign with the Cowboys because they were the first team to contact him after the draft. The Cowboys also were among a small handful of teams that attended his pro day, timing him in a 4.48 40-yard dash.

Heath is listed 5 pounds lighter than Vaccaro, yet recorded 7 more reps on the 225 lb bench press. Heath also recorded a faster 40 time, clocking in at 4.49, Vaccaro submitted a 4.59. Vaccaro (38″) and Heath (37″) had nearly identical verticals, though Heath is listed as one inch taller than Vaccaro. Heath did best Vaccaro in the broad jump.

Only thing I found on him running a 4.65 was this

Jeff Heath (Saginaw Valley S) – 40 yard dash went from 4.65 pre-test to 4.45 at Pro Day. Vertical Jump went from 30″ pre-test to 37″ at Pro Day and blew the scouts away on position drills. Jeff signed with the Dallas Cowboys and is in the 3rd year of his contract.

I would say what allowed Heath to make the roster his rookie year was his athletic ability and the fact the Cowboys look for guys like him in the late rounds/UDFA.
Very good measureables, but need time to develop and mature their athletic ability into NFL players.

Do I think he can become a starter? 50-50 on that. More than likely he stays as a package safety/ST ace.

Pro day 40 times don't mean much. They can be wind aided, on faster surfaces, using starting blocks, etc.

Heath made the roster because he's a good special teams player. And he has experience playing safety and it picked up things fairly quickly.

My hope for a player like him is that if he continues to improve in zone coverage, which Wilcox has not shown...maybe he can turn into a player that has a good feel for zone and is where he's supposed to be (unlike Wilcox) and can be a pretty good starter that can form tackle well.

I don't think that highly of Kam Chancellor as a safety, but when put together with somebody like Earl Thomas who is utterly ridiculous to watch...it allows Chancellor to do what he does best which is tackle and play the ball. Without Thomas, I would rather have Heath than Chancellor. So maybe Byron Jones becomes somewhat near as good as Thomas, but we have a much more dependable player in Heath.

The issue with the 2015 Cowboys is that they were limited in the coverage they could play. They most stuck to man and Cover-1. That's because neither corner could play zone that well once Scandrick went out and Wilcox is poor in zone as well. Claiborne, Carr and Wilcox are much better man coverage guys. Heath, who led the team in INT's....got them in zone coverage. And he got them in a very typical way of getting them in zone coverage...corner is underneath the receiver and the safety is behind the receiver....an errant throw a bungled catch can end up right into the safety's arms.

We couldn't switch up the coverages and therefore the opposing QB knew pretty much exactly where to go with the ball and it just became a game of execution instead of a game where the opposing offense had to decipher the coverage on the fly and make the appropriate adjustments and then execute properly. Once we get DB's that can play both man and zone competently like Scandrick and can tackle effectively...that's when we'll start seeing turnovers.

Cowboys' 53-man roster projection does not include a 2015 starter

Todd Archer ESPN Staff Writer

The Dallas Cowboys wrapped up their offseason program Thursday and will open training camp July 28 in Oxnard, California. Here’s a 53-man roster projection:

QUARTERBACKS (3): Tony Romo, Kellen Moore, Dak Prescott

The Cowboys could look for a more veteran backup if Moore does not progress.Jameill Showers faces an uphill battle to stick simply because Prescott was a fourth-round pick.

RUNNING BACKS (3): Ezekiel Elliott, Darren McFadden, Alfred Morris

McFadden’s broken elbow could keep him off the practice field for most of training camp and scuttles any potential trade possibilities. Rookie Darius Jackson, a sixth-round pick, has some skills that might be worth developing, so he could stick as well. Lance Dunbar will open the season on the physically-unable-to-perform list as he comes back from a knee injury.

***snip***

CORNERBACK (5): Orlando Scandrick, Brandon Carr, Morris Claiborne, Anthony Brown, Deji Olatoye

You might not like it but the top three are set. The fourth and fifth corner jobs are wide open. Brown is getting work inside and outside. Olatoye was a starter at the end of last season and has good size. Jeremiah McKinnon, an undrafted free agent, has a chance. So does veteran Josh Thomas. I don’t see them keeping six because in a pinch they could move Byron Jones to corner.

SAFETY (4): Barry Church, Byron Jones, Jeff Heath, Kavon Frazier

This might be my biggest surprise: no J.J. Wilcox. He is going into the last year of his deal and counting $1.8 million against the cap. Church is also entering the final year of his deal and will make $4.25 million this year. That’s a lot of money but his dependability gives him an edge. The Cowboys made a financial commitment to Heath, their best special-teamer. They drafted Frazier in the sixth round and like his athleticism. He has a future, while Wilcox looks like he would be gone after this season.

This would please me very much. I have had my fill of the experiment.

Not a championship Roster to say the least. Defense appears suspect at best.

correct. The offense is good enough to go 13-3 IF they stay healthy. The D is a 7-9 type crew IMO. Looks like 10-6 type year which I can live with IF we make some noise in the playoffs.

Did you watch the Seahawks Broncos Super Bowl a few years back? Chancellor was the reason the Seahawks defense was so dominant. He destroyed all the dink and dunk crossing routes and rubs the Broncos tried to run. He's way underrated.

Last off season, there where numerous get rid of church cause Wilcox is better posts. I guess it's safe to say, that church is better. Regardless, of our opinions, the front office seems to think the same.
