Are Cowboys legit Super Bowl contenders?

There are two ways of winning the big game:
1. A top defense
2. A great running game

Not saying different combos of areas won't get ya there, but those two above are the most important IMO.

We have one of those, so we have a fighting chance. I would prefer to have the defense like SEA, Balt, CHI, etc but we have what we have. The running game allows them to travel to cold cities without interrupting their offensive game-plan.

Too bad there is a horrific gauntlet that they have to maneuver through to get there......

Vegas says we are the 5th most likely team to win the super bowl...we've already beaten Seattle...that means only gb and one afc stand in our way...
I'd say based on that, we are definitely contenders

Just to be clear, not suggesting just bc we beat sea once that it's a given we will do it again...but I am suggesting that it's a given that we can beat them bc we already did..

Exactly. Based on that alone, we should be ranked higher IMO. Green Bay hasn't proven it can win in Seattle, Denver hasn't proven it come close to beating Seattle on a neutral field or otherwise. We have, and did so definitively. Should Seattle be used as the barometer? Why not? They're the defending champs and currently the favorite to win this year.

Couple of quick thoughts on this list:
  1. That list had four 1st round picks, one 1st pick overall, and one 2nd pick overall. They may have been no-names, but it was loaded with 1st round talent.
  2. That the first time in maybe my entire time here on CZ (maybe 5 years) that I've see anybody mention Robert Jones. Pretty amazing considering he was a starting LB on all three 90's Cowboys Superbowl winning squads. Why is that?

Then Jimmie Jones needs a shout out also.....:)

I think the vote is pretty much right on at 50/50. It's way easier to believe in the offense than the defense. I'm sure some of the no votes are haters and Romo doubters, but aside from that, I think the pool of fans that buy into the Cowboys defense is limited to portion of the Cowboys fan base. I don't think anyone sees them going out there and winning the Cowboys a playoff game.

The Cowboys have won 11 games and were the only team to beat the defending SB champion Seahawks on their home turf this season that makes them legit contenders.

i think we have a real shot this year. But, i also think we are slighly below the Seahawks. Detriot gives us fits and has some studs that can take over a game.....and if Rodgers is hitting, and we cant stop him, then thats probably game over for the cowboys...

but these games could go any direction....

we have a shot....it isnt out of the realm of reasonable possibility.....but its going to be tough...

Right now I have to say we're a year away because I just have a feeling our defense is going to let us down just enough in the playoffs to keep us from really contending for the Superbowl.

I do think we're much closer than we've been in many, many, many years.

This is how I feel. The Cowboys have a legit shot. If I had to bet my life on one team it wouldn't be the Cowboys (it would be Seattle) but I I don't look at any matchup and think it's impossible.

the cowboys beat the seahawks when there defense was not full strength but now they are just dominating. then again they have not faced a great offenses in the last month. I hope we can get a chance to find out if we can beat them again. the seahawks will be looking forward I bet to beat the cowboys if they get the chance. I just wish that the cowboys could play them in dallas instead of seattle again.

Seattle was not at full strength or were they manhandled in the trenches and that's just an excuse by ESPN?

I like this one, where Leary drives Malcolm Smith 12 yards deep into Richard Sherman, Zach Martin destroys Kam Chancellor and oh
there's Bobby Wagner playing the pass.

This one is good too. Parnell and Clutts absolutely bury Kevin Williams, Fred Beard Destroys Brandon Mebane and Kam Chancellor, Zach Martin takes out Bobby Wagner, Leary is 10 yards down field again this time killing KJ Wright and Sherman has no chance one on one against Demarco Murray.

Watch each block on an individual basis (wow) and you will see domination of the trenches. It wasn't that Seattle wasn't healthy, it's they have never been dominated or should I say bullied like this by anyone.

The Seahawks were healthy when we played. They were pretty butt sore after the game. They wind up losing Wagner, Chancellor and Mebane weeks later after we played.

There's no excuse...what we did to them is very real.

Every team in the playoffs is a super bowl contender or they wouldn't be there.

Many people didn't think this was a SB caliber defense:
LE Tony Tolbert
LDT Russell Maryland
RDT Tony Casillas
RE Charles Haley
LOLB Ken Norton, Jr.
MLB Robert Jones
ROLB Vinson Smith
LCB Larry Brown
RCB Kevin Smith
SS Thomas Everett
FS James Washington

Boy when I look at this list it is pretty tough to say that I think all of them would be starters on todays team. MLB with Jones is the only one who doesnt replace a current Cowboy.

In the end we either pull off the surprise like the 1992 Cowboys or we're the 1991 version who put the league on notice that they're contending for years to come and end up being champions the following season.

This is a fantastic post!

Thats bogus. The Seahawks defense was in full strength and we just flat out beat them. They are playing better football now but so are we. It will be hard to beat them again in Seattle but they are making excuses that they had injuries is nothing more than an excuse.

There is no excuse. We dominated both the offense and defense LOS and this was when they were riding high in their own stadium. We broke their invincibility at home and shook them up a bit and started their mini-skid. Now that they got their grove back everyone's saying their are invincible. We guess what? Dallas broke that invincibility in their home court. Thus we are and should be considered contenders.

The last team they want to see is us.

Right. And what's funny we didn't really play that well in that game. A blocked punt, and down 10-0, with lots of mistakes. In reality we should have blown them out.

Can't wait for the rematch! ;)
