Are fans ready to accept the Micah trade devasted our defense?

I understand if we were actually in an official rebuild mode and Micah wasn’t in our plans as we planned on trading him to highest bidder during Free Agency that could have actually been a strategic plan. But that’s not what happened. We had every intention on resigning. We just couldn’t get a deal done . But I’m not here to argue out as that’s been exhausted over last couple months.

This thread is about what the impacts of losing Micah has meant to this defense . The fact we lost him a week before the season had to be devasting to a DC and schemes with other losses on defense in FA and injuries.

Where was our pass rush going to come from. We also lost Lawrence as a Cap Casualty. Our top two edge rushers gone .

And with our 2 CB’s not a 100% recovering from injuries we were leaving our secondary very vulnerable without a pass rush.

WTH were we thinking. We had to know it could be a disaster .
Let me rephrase that -- Are the fans who screamed about needing to trade him going to admit how stupid that idea was?

You likely have your answer.

Yes at some point in 5 years you have to have a down year for one year or you have to make a decision but the Cowboys are nowhere near that point. There are maybe 5-6 teams legitimately pressed up against the cap and the Cowboys were not close to being one of them. They were so far from it that to say this gave them freedom is simply not realistic. There is not a single move, or series of moves, they can make now that they could not make before. Yes they can make those moves without having to make decisions in 5 years but they also will continue to not be making any deep playoff runs in the meantime.

Meanwhile a lot of the successful teams built their defense around one expensive player. See Chris Jones and Nick Bosa for current examples. Relatedly you can also use the latter as an example of how you can load up a roster with a lot of all pro talent and sign them.
That's because they just signed Dak and Lamb to new contracts. Sure, right now they could sign several free agents and worry about the consequences later.

You can finance a lot of wasteful things too and not feel the weight of those purchases for a while, but eventually you will and likely regret it.

As long as all of those guys play up to their contracts and don't get injured, it would be great for at least a couple of years.

Eventually though it's going to create a huge problem when those back-loaded contracts start converging at the same time.

So, is it possible to sign everybody? Sure. Is it smart? Absolutely not unless you are the Super Bowl favorite .. and the Cowboys are a long way from that even with Micah.

This defense would have been bad with Micah as well. Its that bad.

Now that it is over I am glad they traded him. They have money to sign players and draft picks to help this defense going forward.
And Micah would have been complaining all year long. Its better to have traded him instead of a gutted defense with him.

Micah hasn't done squat in Green Bay. He is one of the most overrated players in the league. He got completely exposed by us on that Sunday Night game.
Micah will participate in a playoff game this season. He got himself into a position he’ll have an opportunity to make a difference in an important game. It will be on TV. Interested party’s will get to watch him.

I’m sure 99% of Cowboys fans won’t watch because, well, he’s not that important and couldn’t make a difference in Dallas. He probably believed the same thing. And got himself away from Jerry’s carnival show.

If you owned the Cowboys and he publicly said he no longer wanted to play for you, would you be eager to sign a $200 million dollar contract with him? I don't believe the divorce was really all that sudden, it was brewing for some time.
If I owned the Cowboys, it would have never reached that point. But yes, it became unfixable when Jerry and Stephen bad-mouthed him and Parsons reacted very poorly and immaturely to that.

I believe it was fairly sudden. I think the Cowboys had every intention to sign him heading into camp. Jerry had offered him a more than fair offer and they shook on it. Then, they tried to get the agent to read over the offer and sign off on it and he refused, saying that Jerry had to essentially start over and deal with him. Micah said he did not accept a deal, Jerry believed that he had and then things got sideways. Jerry refused to budge from what he offered, disparaged Micah and his agent and Micah soured.

However, Micah and his agent also tried to approach Jerry at the last minute with Parsons saying that he wanted to stay a Cowboy after all and wanted to work something out, and Jerry essentially said he was not interested. I would have worked something out. Green Bay did and got him (at least for now) to drop all the podcasting stuff and say he was focusing only on football. Jerry could have been the bigger man and did that. Obviously, they had talked about the importance of Micah being a leader, though, and Parsons did not show himself to be a leader with his reactions.

Just think of how we will look in 2 years with 4 first round draft picks on this team. It is pretty clear this defense needs more than just one player. Last year with Micah we were not a good defense so there is that too.
Another Taco Charlton and Mazi Smith aren't going to make us much better. This is the type of defensive talent we've acquired most recently with mid- to late-first-round picks. (Well, them and Leighton Vander Esch.) That's why you don't trade one player if that player is a special talent.

two separate things; trading Micah and our bad drafting
Keeping Micah would have changed nothing

Without Micah, ranked 32nd.

With Micah would have been ranked 31st.
and just to double down on this, looking at scoring defense we are 31st in the league last year and this year. We are giving up 3 more points a game to this point, but it's not like the defense improved that much over the course of the year. We gave up 41 to the Eagles in the 2nd to last game.

What people miss is the star to blame. We would lose and people would say Micah didn't do enough, just like they do with Dak. At some point we need to start looking at the worst performers as the ones to blame and why Jerry keeps over paying stars and then trying to make up for lack of depth with cheap high risk reward players.

The post I was responding to was about using the draft picks because we need more than just one defensive player. My point was trading Micah guarantees us nothing in that regard. Our last three mid- to late-first-round picks on defense show that. The only defensive first-round pick we've hit on since 2016 is Parsons.

If you are fine with trading Micah because it "would have changed nothing" as far as the defense success goes, that's fine, but again, that wasn't the post I was responding to.

If you are fine with trading Micah because you believe we can build a better defense with the two late-first-round draft picks we received, then our draft history the past 10 years says good luck with that. Best we can hope is probably for another Byron Jones like we got in 2015 before the three mehs and Micah.

You ignore the fact that we stank with Micah and without; that is historically correct as well
We have a chance to use those picks to get better
we had no chance to get better with Micah

If you think Parsons would’ve made this defense much better, you’re as goofy as the guy who traded him!!!

Agreed! Some guys act like Micah was a 1 man defense.........NOT!
Like you said, "This defense would have been bad with Micah as well. Its that bad."

It’s speculative of course but even slightly better with our high powered offense might be enough to be more competitive especially once our CB’s fully recover and Overshown returns .

It’s not like we’ve been blown out every loss. A 3 and 4 point loss and 1 tie. Slightly better, Cowboys could have 3 or 4 wins.

My best hope with Micah was 8 or 9 wins which could have kept us in playoff hunt. Dak has never had a losing record when he’s healthy entire season.
What about if you had added 2-3 more pieces in free agency and signed Micah. What would your expectation be then?

Your logic is sound, however when has the GM of the cowboys ever used logic in the last 30 years?

If the GM would have used logic, we would have been able to even keep Parsons because if he ever intended to keep Parsons, he would have signed him at the end of last season or early this year for a lot less money.

I repeat: Micah had 2 tackles Sunday.
So much for the player we canna do without.

Micah lied. Jerry offered him a highly paid deal but slightly less than $47 mil/year. Micah refused! Micah created this trade. Not Jerry. Micah was the super greedy one who didn't give a flip about this team or players. He simply wanted to get paid a record deal.

I don't disagree but with Parsons and Lawrence we might have the 23rd ranked defense not 32nd. That might be good for 4-2 right now with the way the offense has played.
My line of thinking as well.

This year through 6 games

Birds scored 142 points allowed 143 points
Commodes scored 158 points allowed 126 points
Cowboys scored 178 points allowed 184 points
Giants scored 121 points allowed 144 points

Cowboys have scored the most points in the division, but also have given up the most points.

Reality is after Jerry started dragging his feet on Parsons and not signed him early in the year, we all thought Parsons was going to be resigned and it was just Jerry using his own line of logic that Parsons would be signed but that Jerry was going to milk it for all it's worth and that logic backfired.
