Well stated Mash. I couldn't agree more about the OL b'kups; IMHO they suck.Mash;2185332 said:I think we all know that this team is a contender.....
I think most of our expectations was to have a solid game.....IMHO I dont think most of us cared if we won or lost this preseason game.
But IMHO we didnt look prepared......our special team units are bad and even tho we were probally using alot of bottom feeders on those units.....so were the Chargers and they looked much better.
I think its safe to say our starters are pretty good and the NFC East will be a battle this year because I think the other teams in that division are pretty good too.
Its good to have big expectations ...but we might of got caught up with all the hype the media has been giving us about how much talent and depth we have.
We do have a solid team....but there is still some questions here to be answered.....Special teams is my biggest concern.....its 1/3 of the game as Jimmy Johnson would say....our kicker and punter are very good but our coverage units are hurting.
I think our draft picks will be ok......Bennett bothers me and if it wasnt for having Curtis here I would be complaining more and I think the LB we drafted on day two is practice material stuff.
oh...also.....our backup OL has some issues.......I think Free might be a player....but I didnt see anything last nite from the other guys that look like they could be a future starter here.
All in all......I think most of us think this team is a contender but I think we also realize that there are several teams like those Chargers last nite that have as much or more talent then we do.
I was nailed to the wall last night for agreeing w/ cowboyrock, but these same posters were lamenting that Cory Procter was getting "tossed around like a rag doll" when he filled in for Gurode last year. Well guess what? He was getting tossed around last night too. Where will we be if Gurode gets hurt again this year, say in game 3 or so, and is out for the year?
All of this "depth at CB " is a mystery to me as well. The b'kup CBs for SD were playing it so close they looked as if they were wearing the same shirt as our WRs! Their WRs were wide open (just like last year) so what are we to do if a starter goes down, or can't even get on the field (eg TNew and his $49 mil, or whatever it was)?
And as for my remarks about Wade Philllips losing weight, it is not a "personal attack", and I in no way infered that if he is overweight he's dumb. No only is it unhealthy to be overweight, especially when you have such a stressful and demanding job as HC of the Dallas Cowboys, it shows a lack of discipline. If you are asking your players to have the discipline to not jump offsides, not do pass interference, to stay in their lanes on KO coverage, not beat up strippers in the off-hours, etc. then how about leading by example? I love Wade Phillips and was glad when he got the job. But I cannot agree w/ him that getting a first round bye in the POs is the same as "winning a PO game".
If we are going to have a successful season we are going to have to see 2nd tier players that can play almost as well as their first string counterparts. Otherwise, we'll be having the same disappointments year-in-and-year-out when a starter goes down, just as we did last season. Saying this does not make me a Cowboy-hater, just a realist...
