Are pass rushers worth top dollar?

I don't agree with Jerry's decision, especially with the foolishness of paying Dak $60mil/year, but I'll at least entertain the thought that pass rushers aren't impactful enough to be paid so much.

The top paid guys are all on teams that aren't contenders. The rest of the team being trash isn't a cop out, if they weren't spending so much money on a single pass rusher, they could have more to spend on other guys. Garrett is a beast but the Browns went 3-14 last year. Even with the Watson problems they have, surely Garrett could lift them to more than 3 wins?

So is it better to spread the money out for a few decent players instead of a single HoF level talent? Elite pass rushers on rookie contracts don't count either, they need to be paid top dollar so that they have to give up other guys.

Maybe the lesson here is pass rushers are overrated so when the Cowboys inevitably get a top 5 to top 10 pick again real soon, don't spend it on a pass rusher because they don't contribute as much to winning as most think.

Define top dollar. Are they worth over 40 mil/season? No. Any player is only as good as the players around him. Pay one guy too much, and you are going to suffer elsewhere.

So, unless you are simply knocking the draft out of the park and trading away valuable players before you have to pay them, it won't work.

It is working in Philly purely due to the Wentz trade which brought in Jalen Carter. Eagles are using his rook contract very wisely. I can't stand the Eagles, but man are they doing it right.

Interior game wreckers are FAR more valuable in today’s current league, imo. Aaron Donald, Chris Jones, and now Jalen Carter are much much more impactful than an undersized edge like Micah. I don’t even really consider Micah and Myles Garrett to be the same- Myles is 6’5 300 and can play inside.

yes, 100%. absolutely.....its a passing league. and to stop the pass you must be able to pressure the QB. pass rushers are premium players, thus why they get paid top dollars. play against Mahomes with average pass rush and bend but don't break approach and he will eventually tear you apart. pressure even mahomes and he will crack. just see Eagles last year.

pass rushers aren't over rated. its the cowboys nation trying to lick their wounds losing parsons and justifying it to be OK.

Just look at the successful franchises and they all behave the same way…..ruthless and decisive.

Pass rushers are worth money if there is a defense around them. Pass rushers alone do not win games. Dallas couldn't build the defense around MP while he was on his rookie deal and had no chance of doing so with him making that much money.

It's a quarterback driven league and a pass rusher that can affect the quarterback is a top priority, that being said salaries in the NFL are out of control and the price of doing business is steep. But as far as Micah is concerned, and undersize edge rusher in a 4-3, a player that lacks gap assignment, a player that wears down as the season goes on and disrupts the locker room, not so much.

QBs are over valued because its the cheapest way to get to the chamnpionship. if not, then you end up like eagles, having to pay so many to build a strong team and it gets a lot more expensive. and its a lot harder.

pass rushers are at a premium, because its the easiest way to counter a QB and the passing game that the league has become. Mahomes is generational talent, but he was nuetered in the superbowl because of the pass rush. same thing when he lost to Tampa. u

Of course, but edge rushers are neutralized in the playoffs if you don't have disruptive DTs.

To be clear, he was neutered due to the interior pass rush. The DTs shut him down.

It depends on what kind of a team you want to be. If you want to play defense and ball control offense, then paying a pass rusher top dollars will probably be worth it. If you want to think of yourself as a high scoring team that will outscore opponents, then depend on 1 guy to make up a defense, then no.

But while we argue about the money Micah got paid, which is really $42 million per year, consider what Micah would have cost in 2023 or even in March of 2024.

Let's see how the season plays out. Something tells me come January we will have a good idea of what Micah is worth.
