Are we going to run a New England type of offense?

This will be attempt #3 to run the two TE offense.

New England has been able to do it, but thus far Dallas has wasted two 2nd round draft picks on backup TE's.

I hope this isn't #3...

Williams will be on this team for a long time. That can't be said about one of our starters in recent years. Miles replacement might have been drafted tonight.

That is fine, that's the only part I like. I just thought we could have filled better voids than what we did. I like where we're at at WR

Obviously. But why draft Escobar in the 2nd if we're going to be running 3 wide sets?

And if we're going to be running 12 personnel, why draft Williams in the 3rd, especially when you have Dwayne Harris who really impressed last year, as well as Coale Beasley, who fills a much needed void with some wiggle underneath coverage.

I just don't like what we've done in this draft very much.

I'm really stunned as to why people seem so fixated on Harris. I mean, he's fine for a 3rd or 4th WR, but he's nothing special. Williams has the chance to be quite special.

Austin will likely be gone next season. Our starting base set will be 12 with Witten, Escobar, Dez, and Williams. Several big targets who can catch.

It's all about being being better in the red zone.

It's a valid point. Hanna is a nice prospect but doesn't scream red zone. Witten is a potential HOFer, but he isn't much of a red-zone threat.

The face value of the Escobar pick was laughable due to taking another tight end, but he does have the potential to add a dimension to our offense that we lacked. Be it attacking the seam, down on the goal line, creating mismatches by lining up at different spots on the field. Garrett just has to show he knows how to use him. Not trying to sound trite, but that's my concern at this point. Will it be non-utilized talent?

They have been talking about a 2 TE set since Fasano was drafted.

A lot of people have touched on this, but Harris and Williams will practically play different positions for us. Harris and Beasley are more slot guys (we'll see if Coale is anything), while Williams gives us a true backup/developmental guy to work with on the outside. Austin is also versatile enough to play in the slot with Bryant and Williams outside, once the rook is ready to take first-team reps.

I remember back when we had both Roy Williams and Martellus Bennett. They were big, tall guys too. And those traits were never utilized either.

Harris played very well in nearly all of his opportunities last year and earned more PT.

Yeah, that's definitely hitting on the concerns I have with this pick. Bennett never seemed like a refined pass catcher here, but he did have some strengths that went largely unused his final few seasons here. Part of a dynamic offense is acquiring the right talent, the other part is using that talent the right way. Sproles, for instance, isn't nearly the threat if used as a traditional back.

You bet your we are going to run the new England offense. minus the creativity and minus 90% of the plays.

He played fine. As I said, nothing special.

Williams can take over as the #2 WR, while Harris and Beasley just can't do that job.

As for Escobar, it just gives us more options on offense. I hope JG can utilize him effectively, thats the main question at this point. There aren't many positions on this team that didn't need improvement, but TE and WR were among the lowest needed positions and it goes to show they really were drafting according to BPA on their board.

Greg Cosell says he has been told by numerous DC's that the 12 package is the hardest to defend FWIW.

They brought in Romo to watch film on Williams & Escobar & I take it he liked what he saw & what they are going to do with the offense.

It's not the players IMO. It's the OC.

If running a NE offense means having two TE's on the field, then sure. We are running a NE offense. However, I am not in favor of taking Harris (a proven playmaker) off the field in favor of a rookie TE that hasn't played a snap of NFL football.

I'm also not sure what this means for Hanna, and I loved Hanna's athletic upside.

The fact of the matter is that we've had multiple 2nd round TE's here and not a single one ended up being involved in the offense in any major way. Why, suddenly, this would change is beyond me.

Or taking off the new 3rd WR.

Must be running the empty backfield 2TE set.

Yes. There won't be a fullback on the team next year.
This is what I was thinking. Maybe Hanna will get some use as an H-back.

Does drafting another TE mean we are going to throw short passes, getting the ball out Romo's hands quickly, like they do in New England?
