That's not the best approximation of what the player would get if the team didn't have exclusive rights. It's strictly about draft slot. Inconsistency is a great way to generate conflict.
They best approximation of a players value on draft day *is* his draft slot. Which is why RBs don’t typically get drafted in the top 5 and why were finding out now it was a mistake to draft Elliott that high.
That changes after four (or in this case, 3) full years in the league. After they’ve actually played you have a better estimate of their value as pros because you have three years of performance data relative to other pros.
It’s not inconsistency. It’s a completely different basis that wasn’t available on draft day.
