If not moving anymore backwards is considered successful, then fine.
I'm not gaga over Davis. He's not the answer that the Cowboys want us to think he is. He really hasn't produced anywhere the level that his draft position or this new contract called for.
If this guy flatlines on us, the screaming about what a dud Rivera has been and the cap we wasted on him will be totally drowned out by the new chorus screaming 'murder' if Davis plays anything like he did in 'Zona.
Which he easily can.
Which is not going to be what is needed or expected.
Will he be better than an injured Rivera..sure.
Will he be ALL-World..?
Not.
Will he change our offensive dynamic..?
I don't think so.
JMO.
And as for over paying Guerode and signing Brad Johnson..?
Again, if addition by subtraction by replacing Drew Bledsoe with Brad Johnson is an improvement, that's a stretch IMO.
I'd have much rather we not spent a fortune on the OL in Davis, drafted somebody to play there instead or give somebody we have a shot at it..
..and used our monies and efforts on getting a QB with some potential to compete with Romo and not be his caddie like Brad Johnson will be, a coverage FS to stop the hemorrage in the secondary and another pressure LBer or DL to cure the..
..two biggest things that ailed this team in 2006..
..the pass rush and defending the pass downfield and stopping the underneath short passing by the RBs that shreaded us in the last 5 games.
:bang2:
I think that too much is being asked of the Phillips schemes to overcome what is still a lack of talent in two very important areas. I think Dallas has done a good job of laying down a smokescreen with the press and fans so far with all this gushing about Davis and Guerode and now Columbo.
We had Guerode and we had Columbo last year and I don't remember them dominating any DL down the stretch. Is paying them both a Brink's Truck each going to make them All-Pro..?
I'm doubting that.
But the major cancers are still not being addressed..IMO. our opponents know this and they are not quaking with fear with this 'successful FA period'. I'm sure of that.
Much more is needed.
So until FA fixes these problems by ADDITION and not subtraction of players or the bringing in of players who haven't proven themselves after 6 years in the NFL..
..like Davis..
..is not something I can get excited about.
But it remains to be seen because FA isn't over and Dallas seems to be holding on to their cap dollars.
We'll see.
