Arkin vs. Rackley

I've got zero idea of how Rackley is doing other than the fact that he's in a similar situation to where Arkin finds himself.

At this point, I don't really see the benefit in comparing the two. Nothing can be done either way just like I don't understand the comparisons of Felix to Chris Johnson.

If Rackley ends up better, it won't mean a thing because we have Arkin.

Because if youre not insane its interesting to think of the different combinations of moves they could have made. For example if they didnt make the Roy trade they probably take Percy Harvin(trade up) or Michael Oher. That means they dont take Tyron at 9 and probably trade down and/or take Mark Ingram. It works both ways.

And if they didnt do the Fasano/Bennet disaster they might have taken DeSean Jackson instead of Bennet.

Just like I love finding out how they had the draft board.

First, let me say that I'm happy we drafted Arkin - seems like a tough, good player. Only real concern is whether he has the strength to anchor against the bigger, stronger DT/NTs out there. Going back to draft day, many of you probably recall the reaction when we passed on Will Rackley in the 3rd for Murray. We saw a highly ranked guard sitting on the board as we drafted another RB. Many of us were very disappointed that we passed on Rackley. I still don't think we needed to pull the trigger on a RB that early but, hopefully, Murray will prove to be special. Well, one round later we drafted Arkin which made some of us feel a little better. His profile was somewhat similar to Rackley's and he was ranked just a few slots below him. My question is, although it's still VERY early, how has Rackley looked? Does anyone know? Although there's nothing we can do about it now, I'm curious to see if he has started off well. As I've said, I like Arkin (and I also have high hopes for Murray). This thread is really more about curiosity than "rue". :)

the key is he is a hard worker. coming from smaller college. if he has the smarts, it seems that his hard working attitude will help him work in the weight room to get stronger. give him a year in NFL and we will see the big difference next year.

as to your point regarding drafting another RB. I think, its the NFL offenses adjusting to blitzing pressure defenses. Peyton did it with reggie bush. creating mismatches against the defense, by moving him all over the place. from all accounts, Murray is that style of RB. good in picking up pass rushers and blitzes, very good hands, very good speed. expect him to be moved around a lot. and teams need two good RBs these days.

Will Rackey does not run very well. 5.39 at 309 lbs is pretty horrible. its not like he was some 350 lbs behemoth. His shuttle and 3 cone times are horrible. I know half of us do not put much stock into measurables but its pretty obvious that we are now looking for athletic lineman.

Rackey ain't it. He was bottom tier in most measurables at the combine. Smith, Rackey and Nagy all move very well.

I know we all get our pet cats but if you start seeing 5.3 or 7.9 on measurables you might was well take that OL off your mock as long as Garrett is running the show. This is your Daddy's Cowboys cause this si the type that Landry liked.

I like it.

I think you meant Arkin. Thanks for the info though! I'm definitely happy about more athletic linemen as well. I'm tired of watching lumbering oafs that can't get out of their own way and don't even help in short yardage because they have no burst. Having said that, I'd still like us to sign Waters because he's better than Holland and we don't know if Arkin is ready yet.

I don't think strength will do much I think it's about technique and getting better at it every year, good coaching can make him a good player and a good O-Lineman for us

Shawn from Easton, PA:
How has Will Rackley looked in practice so far? It seems with the release of Manuwai he'll be playing very early. Also, do you think Dawan Landry will make a smooth transition to free safety after playing strong safety for so long in Baltimore?

John: Rackley is working with the starters and will be given every chance to be the starter this season. He appears to be having the sort of camp expected from a rookie with a lot of ability. He looks good in spots and at other times, he looks like he’s in the process of learning what it takes to play in the NFL. Don’t forget: these rookies had no off-season, so they’re not only adapting physically, they’re trying to absorb more mentally than rookies have had to do in the last couple of decades. As for Landry, it appears the Jaguars are going to go with more of a right-left safety combination than strong/free, but if Landry plays either, he almost certainly would play strong.

Chance from FL:
I have two questions. Should Jaguars be concerned with Will Rackley after what happened during the Oklahoma Drill and is there a chance Blaine will take Garrard’s spot after his showing in the two-minute drill?

John: Will Rackley is a rookie who during his first padded NFL practice went up against a second-year veteran with Top 10-in-the-draft talent. He didn’t dominate, but I would be more concerned with Alualu than I would have been giddy over Rackley if he had. Rackley afforded himself well during that drill. As far as quarterback, don’t read too much into any one training camp drill. Gabbert’s a rookie and his development will take time. I can tell you the Jaguars are very pleased with what they’ve seen so far in camp. He makes things that are very difficult look easy.

and we have probably passed up on a lot of hot picks that people convienently forget busted. Taylor Mays anyone?

He had a huge following after his soph/junior seasons, but by the time he came out, there wasn't nearly as much noise.

Yes but we were sitting there with about a million picks in what was described as a weak draft. I have no doubt that we could have moved up with a few of those picks to get Unger

granted we could've traded any pick except Butler and be exactly where we are today, but Unger hasn't exactly lit Seattle on fire. I think he's ended the last 2 seasons on IR.

he started every game as a rookie in 2009. He was on IR last year. 17 starts for Unger is pretty much more than our entire draft class of 2009 gave us.
