A Big Ten football officiating team that came under scrutiny for its performance in two conference games last month was led by a crew chief with a history of bankruptcy, casino gambling, child abuse and allegations of sexual harassment, a Yahoo! Sports investigation has revealed. Purdue v. Penn State and Ohio State v. Illinois are the games in question. The Purdue games outcome was decidedly changed by the officials in my opinion. For those of you who don't believe officials can change the outcome of games you might want to read this article.

I agree. I do think officials can influence a game. I don't think it's some huge problem tho. People make mistakes. We are not perfect creatures. There will always be human error w/ all officials in any sport.

Some people just make bigger ones and more of them at opportune times for specific teams......

Steeler-Hawks SB game sure comes to mind. The officiating there was horrific. If that had happened to Dallas in the Super Bowl I might have stroked out a croaked on the spot. Heck the Dallas-49er champinship in 94 nearly did me in.

Sports are a billion dollar business why would anyone even question the possibility of corruption?...Officiating has to be the single biggest lynchpin in the floodgate of impropriety between sports and gambling.

Ban sports gambling, go a long ways in bringing some integrity back to the games...Moreover, a transparent review system to evaluate referees has been needed for a lonnnnng time...Cuban had it right but the Billionaire Boys Club want no part of anyone impacting their product apart from themselves.

why the NFL cannot have full time refs is a mystery. Wouldn't even cost a thing to do it either. Have guys who are nothing but refs. Year-round, all they do is officiate and work on officiating. Im so sick of calls being made on the interpretation of the rule by one official when an exact similar play might be called totally different by someone else.

Don't know if someone saw that intentional grounding call on Orton last night but that had to be one of the worst calls I have ever seen. The announcers were all over it and calls like that should not happen.

Put a system where thats all those guys do. They get bonuses based on performance and are held accountable for repeat piss poor calls.

I once heard that you can call a penalty on just about every play.... so with that said... the called penalties are somewhat left up to the ref's judgement.

I dont know how that can be totally fair and unbiased.

It's was stated that the Backjudge's hometown in the game was Pittsburgh, I never thought the Officials lean one way or another until that SB Game, now it looks like the NFL leans toward New England, no suspensions for Cheating and look at the calls they got against Baltimore. BTW, name the last big bad call against them?.

As a PSU fan I coundn't believe that game, A PSU receiver step out of bounds and they let the clock run and PSU got a huge bad spot on a 4th down that you could really see on replay, the Officials pushed it back a yard and a half then the same crew screwed OSU the next week!.

Has anyone read the article? Thoughts?
I really don't want to read it, it'll just make me mad. Between all the steriods and HGH and that SteAlers, Seahawks superbowl I have lost some interest in sports over the last 2 years or so, it's just seems to be getting more and more corrupt as days go by. I was really saddened last week to hear about the Mitchell Report in baseball about Roger Clemens. He was always a guy who I liked and thought highly of and to have it come out that he has been using roids just disgusted me. It really makes me wonder what other athletes, whom I have looked up to as a kid, they will find out cheated in their careers. It seems maybe no one is immune.

Sorry to go on and on about this but it seemed like a good time to get some of this off my chest.
