1. NFL establishes rule before season begins.
2. Rule specifies penalty will be enforced for certain actions.
3. All NFL members (coaches, players, etc.) are made aware of rule before season begins.
4. Player breaks rule.
5. Condition of penalty involves placement of the football at the 15-yard line.
6. Ball kicked 54 yards to the opponents 31-yard line.
7. Opposing team returns the ball 20 yards
8. Ball placed in kicking team’s territory at the 49-yard line.
So, let’s suppose that: a) the player doesn’t break the rule, b) ball was placed on the 30-yard line, c) the kicker boots the ball 54 yards and d) the kicking team covers the kick exactly as they did in reality.
Wouldn’t the opposing team
lose field position, with the ball being placed at their 36-yard line? Wouldn’t that be the preferred special teams’ outcome by coaches, players
and fans alike? Has the state of professional football ‘evolved’ to the point that it’s excusable to increase the odds for the opposing team to gain good field position, regardless of the score? Is making the statement, "Well, the game was out of reach anyway?", the accepted mindset of coaches, players and fans in this day and age?
