Blake Gets 2nd Chance At Dream
The Tampa Tribune
Published: May 5, 2008

TAMPA - The Bucs have never been afraid to give a troubled player a chance to live his NFL dream, and the troubled prospect they extend that special offer to this past weekend was former TCU defensive end Tommy Blake.

One of the best pass-rushing ends in all of college football, Blake's hopes of having an NFL career went off the rails last year when his battle with depression and social anxiety disorder caused him to miss massive chunks of practice and playing time while gaining an inordinate amount of weight.

The result for Blake, who was once considered a likely first-round pick, was a quiet draft weekend in which the only phone call he fielded from an NFL team was the one the Bucs made long after the draft was over.

Still hoping to live the dream, Blake jumped all over the Bucs' offer and now hopes he's shown them enough to at least spend the summer working out with them.

"There's not a point for me to prove," Blake said of his approach to the Bucs rookie minicamp. "I just have to show them that I love the game and give it my all. And I think I've done that. I think I've shown them what I had to show them."

Perhaps, but in Blake's case there will always be at least as much concern about what happens off the field as there is with what happens on it. Blake suggested strongly that those issues may be behind him.

"A lot of people have to deal with a lot of things and unfortunately I had to deal with some things," he said. "But I'm fine now. I had faith in God and he pretty much came through for me. So now we're good, we're real good, and I'm here to play football."

Best of luck to Tommy. This guy has the talent to be a pro-bowler. But does he have the mental capacity?

I was surprised we didn't sign him as an undrafted rookie, particularly since we brought him to VR about 2 weeks before the draft. Either we were interested in other plays or his talent was overlooked because of psychological concerns. Got to wonder if Jerry talked with Calvin Hill about him before obviously decided not to draft him or offer him a UDFA contract.

As sappy as they are, I love all of these second chance type stories. Maybe I'm just a sucker.

I was wondering the same thing.

After bringing him to Valley Ranch, I thought we'd try to sign him at least as an UDFA.

Since we didn't, I figure that either we thought he was a real longshot given his problems or that JJ thought C Hill was overworked as it was. :)

I think one thing that bothered teams quite a bit is that Blake is a very religious young man and has kind of "Even if I can't play football, God will take care of everything" outlook on life, and that rubbed teams the wrong way considering they were looking for signs that he was hungry and passionate about football again after walking away from the sport. Also, he's very quiet and private (kind of has the same personality as Larry Allen), and didn't exactly open up about his issues when teams probed him on it. Also, supposedly the TCU coaches didn't exactly give him a strong recommendation. I don't necessarily think teams made a mistake passing on him, but I do wish he could get a 2nd chance when guys like Alib get chance after chance after chance after testing positive for pot 3 times and still go in the Top 20 picks. It's kind of strange what the NFL will look past and what they wont.

ESPN did a feature on him on their E60 show.

I would consider this a riskier move than bringing in Pacman.

How many people are facing a lifetime of permanent paralysis based off an incident Tommy Blake was involved in?

As far as the two teams are concerned, that is what I mean...take it easy. Breath! Breath!

Bringing in Blake as an UDFA is risky? Why?

Blake is more talented than Walden.
