Here are some of the assistants from staffs where the HC was terminated (or almost assuredly will be terminated)

SF: Mike Solari OL coach, Greg Manusky (3-4) DC

Carolina: John Fox (HC or DC, albeit not a 3-4 guy and almost assuredly will get other HC opportunities), Jeff Davidson (as OL or TE coach, not OC)

Denver: Ed Donatell (DB coach, has been pretty good at that during his career, also has been a DC but not as successful)

Minnesota- nobody. They have a very good DL coach, but hard to imagine Leslie Frazier letting him leave if he stays as HC, as expected

Cinci- assuming they dont renew Marvin Lewis' contract. He'd be a good DC candidate. Ken Zampese as QB coach or some other offensive asst type role. Son of former OC Ernie Zampese (who Garrett played for), knows this passing system inside and out.

Cleveland- Eric Mangini or Rob Ryan, both of whom have 3-4 experience as defensive coordinators, both also coached under Bill Belichick.

Tennessee--Jeff Fisher, if he is let go. Potential HC candidate here. Jim Washburn, outstanding DL coach, Dave McGinnis, more of a 4-3 defensive coach but highly regarded, is currently their LB coach, Mike Munchak OL coach, has built TN's OL into one of the best in the league over the past several yrs and has done it without spending alot of high draft picks on OL, Marcus Robertson, DB coach

Houston- If Kubiak is canned, could be an OC candidate depending on who the HC is but otherwise they nothing I'd be interested in.

Miami- supposedly Parcells intervened to save Sparano his job, though I still wouldnt be surprised if he got whacked. Mike Nolan and Todd Bowles would be of interest. Sparano would probably be of interest, though he might prefer a real OC position elsewhere. Kacy Rogers would be of obvious interest.

I would definitely like Solari and Manusky.

Mangini as DC is intriguing, but I think I'd pass.

Would be ironic considering Wade wanted both those guys...

Ken Zampese is a good call, David.

I've wondered myself about Mangini as DC if he gets canned. You don't hear about that possibility. Just going off memory, I thought he had a couple years of good defenses in New York.

Was it Manusky that Wade and Jones tried so hard to pry out of San Diego or was that another coach? I know it wasnt Stewart, he ended up being the fall back guy after 1 or 2 others fell through.

I think that was Pagano that SD wouldn't let go of, but Manusky coached LBs for Wade in SD and went way back to Denver with him. Wade endorsed him strongly when he went to the Niners, but I think he'd just taken that job in San Fran so there was no way we'd have a chance at him.

Wonder if we might be interested in him if he's free. We wouldn't have to teach an entirely new system, but I have a feeling Garrett would want someone he knows, and he might want to start from scratch.

Thats who I was thinking of. We wanted him as DC right?

Looks like he is still just the LB coach in SD.

More than a guy thats good with Xs and Os we need a guy that can help give this defense an identity.

Wade wanted Pagano and Manusky, but Pagano more. Wayne Nunnally was another coach on that staff I was interested in.

Solari would be very nice to get.

Concerning DC...there seems like there is a number of potential good hires with all of those names out there possibly looking for a job.

I dont know why but it kind of feels like Todd bowles might make sense here as the DC.

Very risky I know, but it is the next step for him. He has worked his way up and has a similar background to garrett. The players here loved him.

I am very curious to see if any of those guys would be of interest to Jerry/stephen/garrett..

I really dont want rob ryan anywhere near the team personally. I cant stand all the ryans and avezzano said rob is crazier than rex. So no thanks.

we need a thread to connect the bloodlines of who garrett has played for and coached under and where they are now and who is on each staff.

Part of me does not want someone who has not been a DC to come here to be a first time DC.

I think we need exp coaches at the OC and DC level. We have JG learning the HC ropes as he goes...I don't care to have his DC doing it as well.

But that is just me.

That does not mean I just want some coach that is not that good but has been a DC before brought in here, or someone like Paul P staying as DC.

But there should be some good coaches out there that have been DCs and Some who have also been HCs before that would help the team and JG.

You take a poor HC and put good coaches under him and that HC might turn out to look good to great.

You take a good to great HC and put good coaches under him and he will turn out to look like an iconic genius.

I think the better your coaches are make the HC and the team better.

I don't want to take a chance on someone else who has never been a DC or OC right now.

:hammer:

Do the Titans kind of run a 46 bear defense....

Chuck Cecil imo, after Fisher is fired.

I would love Ryan as HC. I don’t know much about Rob Ryan but an aggressive defense is in their genes. I want that style of defense and additude.

Yeah I agree, if garrett is here he needs good people around him. I would love for him to pull guys like capers and cameron somehow but I dont think that is happening.

Bowles sill intrigues me though.

No to the spawn of Buddy.

Nice list but just remember . . . with jerra, any sane discussion about possible assistants is like, crazy talk.

With jerra, who knows, anything is possible ala Switzer and Wade. And as for assistants, Jera likes to think outside the box so people will think he is a "football guy."

So, talk amongst yourselves but remember who will be picking the assistants . . .

I kinda doubt we'll get rid of Houck. He was pretty much brought here because of Garrett back in '08. The O-Line has played better under Garrett as well. This one is a tough one for me because I still have some belief in Houck's track record and I think Doug Free is a pretty good LT already. I wouldn't hate on Solari either, but I think with Wade's practice style I think it made it tougher for Houck as well.

Personally, I prefer younger assistant coaches as well. I'm more averse towards older coaches or former head coaches. There's too much of a fear that they may be vying for something bigger at the expense of the team. Or that they are no longer a HC because they didn't adapt to changes in the game and going back to a lesser position may not work for them.

I still vote for Rob Chudzinski as O-Coordinator. I think when all is said and done, he did a great job in Cleveland and runs a similar style of offense. He's probably tougher on guys than Garrett so he could play some good cop, bad cop with Garrett as well. Young, hungry, innovative, demanding...just the type of coach we need.

I'd like to see a D-Coordinator with similar schemes to what Wade used. I think Wade's problem with the defense is that Ratliff became a target by surprise, Ball has failed beyond belief at safety and Spencer wouldn't listen to him and since Wade doesn't discipline guys, he just kept playing undisciplined football.

Still, I think the scheme is pretty sound.

My guys for D-C are Dennis Thurman (although I doubt we'll hire him), Greg Manuskey, John Pagano and Gil Byrd. And while I would be averse to hiring former head coaches, I really wouldn't mind seeing Singletary as D-C. The guy was stuck with Shaun Hill, Alex Smith and Troy Smith and still went 18-22. I think he would command and get the players' respect.

I want both Pasqualoni and Campo gone. Something tells me that at the very least Pasqualoni will find himself at D-Line coach and managing to screw that up. I think Campo will probably stay as well. I think the problem with Campo is he just doesn't get respect from players and has done a poor job with the safeties. Maybe with Garrett he won't have to worry about guys like Jenkins slacking off, but we still need somebody to coach up the safeties.

With Spencer slacking off earlier this year, that makes me less of a fan of Herring. I'd prefer position coaches who command respect from players so they don't dare think of slacking off. But, when your head coach is lax, there's some things you have no control over.

It reminds me a bit of an old job I had where I was giving orders on behalf of my boss to people in a sister company from a different state. No matter what I did, I couldn't get them to follow orders because I wasn't their boss and they didn't give a crap. But after detailing the issues I had and presenting it to my boss, who presented it to their boss, they fell right in line with what I had ordered them to do.

I think John Garrett has done a great job with the TE's and wouldn't mind him being thought of as an O-Coordinator. Witten has played the best he's ever played under John Garrett. Bennett had some rough spots but has turned into an excellent blocker and we have yet to tap his potential as a pass receiver. And John Phillips looked like a great find last year. But I think Jason wants to call the plays and may be in fear of looking like he's practicing nepotism.

We need to get a lot better in coverage and in tackling from the FS. We need to start orienting our offensive passing attack around more 3 WR-1 TE, 4WR-1 TE and 3WR-2TE sets. We need to be able to protect more with just 5 guys than protecting with 7 or even 8. We need to get a lot better at NT in 2011, although I'm not sure if Ratliff's elbow surgery had to do with that.
