The problem is the Jones Boys, and their problem is they are happy just being relevant.

They even consider last season a success because the Cowboys were mathematically alive for the playoffs until week 15. To Jerry and Stephen, "good" is "good enough".

And since 2003, the only losing seasons Dallas endured was when they lost the starting QB for an extended period of time- Quincy Carter was cut in 2004 (6-10), Romo was hurt in 2010 (6-10) and 2015 (4-12) and Dak was hurt in 2020 (6-10) and 2024 (7-10).

Even in the 8-8 Garrett years, the Cowboys had a chance at the playoffs going into the final week of the season. They were in the conversation, so to the Jones Boys, that's successful. That's why Stephen used air quotes to describe "the drought". To him and his father, there is no drought. The Cowboys are relevant. The Cowboys are making money. Super Bowl? Who needs one of those???

I get the lack of QB draftees but where was the opportunity? Manziel? 2014?

The problem is they refuse to tank or bring in innovators and end up in this perpetual treadmill of 6 to 12 wins and a noncompetitive playoff team.

The problem is they want 'continuity' and hire inhouse the guy that makes them comfortable with his pedigree and ability to communicate with them. Dynastic traditionalism does not perform well in modern competitive arenas.
