At the moment Dallas would pick 4th

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones announced on the radio today that quarterback Tony Romo is out for the rest of the year with a hairline fracture of his clavicle. Romo returned two weeks ago from a clavicle injury, and helped guide the Cowboys to a win over the Miami Dolphins. They were down big to the Carolina Panthers at the time of his injury, and are now 3-8 on the season.

The battle for the top pick of the 2016 NFL Draft is going to be a fascinating one with news of this injury. The Cowboys are awful without Romo, dropping seven straight after Romo first went down. Matt Cassel is not a particularly good quarterback, and they face a fairly difficult schedule the rest of the season. Their final five games break down as follows:

Week 13: @ Washington
Week 14: @ Packers
Week 15: vs. Jets
Week 16: @ Bills
Week 17: vs. Washington

That stinks. Lynch will probably go 1 but I don't think the remaining QBs are worth #4. We need some of the other loser teams to win more

so we're in a race with the 49'ers again?

Yes. Our objective for the remainder of the season is to finish worse than the 9ers and the Browns. The week 14 matchup between those two should say a lot as to who wants to suck more for the top pick. If we lose next week to the Skins, we should be in the conversation for the top pick as well (we play GB in week 14).

It blows that it's come down to this, but you sometimes need to hit rock bottom before things start looking up again.

We will pick top 5 no doubt. But Cassel will turn some heads running this offense.

This is what I'll be doing the rest of the season. Rooting for the Cowboys to lose (Go Cowboys! though) and the teams around them in the draft order to win.

Let's look back at this mess in a few years and say, hey...that got us our QB. It was all worth it.

Given how they previously performed without Romo, I can see them ending around

We need to hope and hope hard that this is not the case. This is a team that felt Weeden was a quality back-up, so it is not a stretch for them to see a few good games from Cassel and decide he is the answer in 2016.

I'd gladly take Goff with the #4. Even if we end up with the top pick overall, I think I'm leaning towards Goff over Paxton at this point.

Goff is the only other QB I see in the top half of the first round. Personally, am not a big fan of Lynch--but there's no doubt he fits the NFL prototype so he'll go 1

I am concerned about Goff's frame--I get a Pennington vibe from him, though his arm is much better. But the smarts and talent are there

In the end, I don't think it'll matter. I don't think we're the worst in the league and we'll probably manage one or two more wins. I think #4 or #5 is where we'll be--and Jerry is going to give Romo another shot. LIkely, they'll be minimal changes in the offseason and we'll go hard after the top rated CB or DE with the first rounder. Jerry will want an instant contributor because he believes we're still close--just had some bad luck this year (insert eyeroll here). They might trade back up into the first for the second tier QBs to satisfy the fans and waste a pick on a career backup

It'll be like last year with RB. We'll all debate which RB is best, only to have the team completely avoid the position because of arrogance and then have that decision completely ruin the following season

I agree that Goff's frame is too slender at this point, but if we end up with him, he most likely would have a couple of years to put on weight.

My time table if we end up taking a QB high in this draft:

2016:
Romo - starter
Cassell/ Moore/ FA - #2
Goff/ Lynch - clipboard duty

2017:
Romo - starter
Goff/ Lynch - #2
???? - clipboard duty

2018:
Goff/ Lynch - starter
Romo - #2/ quasi OC

2019:

Romo's not hanging around to be a backup on this team. He'll start as long as he can and then call it a career.
