At what price could Laremy Tunsil be had?

His salary next year is 18 mil

Sure but from out perspective, if we wanted him, we could sign him to an extension and convert some of that to bonus, lower the base salary, etc.

But again, I think they believe Tyron will be back and Tyler will be the future. So at that point, Tunsil doesn't make much sense as a long term fix.

we already "rolled the dice drafting tyron's replacement" when we drafted tyler smith.
the time table just got bumped up.

Their dead money would be even higher if they trade him

If they trade him, now that it's post June 1, they would actually save $1 million in cap space this year. That's because he has a $1 million base salary that would go to the team acquiring him.

It's still not much of an incentive to trade him.

Can we keep in mind that he has never played a full 16-game season and played in only 5 last year due to a 4-6 week injury holding him out for the rest of the year.

Does anyone seriously think Cap Boy is even pondering such a trade?

Stephen and Jerry cruising to the mid Atlantic on his big boat to discuss this as we post. They do not want prying ears and eyes.

As they look at each other, in the middle of the deep blue sea, unless it is cloudy, then a crappy green color.
Then they say, uh, what are we thinking, what are we doing out here. We have OL on the roster. Oh, well, cheers. Let's stop at the Bahamas on the return trip.

A lot, I’m thinking. Plus it would be a lot of salary cap space. A double whammy for the Cowboys.

I think the Texans gave up two first round picks to Miami for him initially… but I’m not 100% sure.
His cost to Dallas would be a million bucks in cap this year. Most of his cap is restructure so it stays with Houston. That in itself complicates a trade because they take a big cap hit by trading him. Next year he’s 18 mil but if you moved on from Tyron it’s around 4 mil net increase in cap space
The cost in picks is the real question, the cap is actually not much of an issue. And then are they really interested in trading him?
I could see why they would. He’s a FA after next year and they are rebuilding. They have some picks to rebuild and could add more with his trade
The cost might be high just because they aren’t overly motivated.

The 18 mil isn’t bad for a starting left tackle and if you moved on from Tyron it’s only around 4 mil net increase in cap space.

Yep
That’s one issue but they are in rebuild mode and they could easily eat the cap this year and they have like 47 mil next year
They have a ton of picks and that would add more
They could literally build one heck of a roster really quick with the picks they have and cap space they have

I get it but they aren't moving on from Tyron. We know this.

They won’t this year for sure. I wouldn’t either
But next year is the last year of his contract
You’d literally be doing him a favor if he wants to keep playing because he could get a new deal
I get loyalty and respect that but I’d be moving on next year. Heck he might get a bigger payday since he’s signed relatively cheap
It’s not likely to happen but I’d be looking at Houston’s interest

I was talking next season (and next) cost as well. But yeah, I agree that the main issue is the cost in draft capital.

It doesn’t matter though. It was never going to happen. I don’t think either franchise wants to do it.

Yes, in any trade, you are going to have to take a dead money hit. But the Texans would technically save $1 million on the cap this year (they would be saving the $1.035 million base salary due to him). So it's not like a situation where they'd be trading a player and have to eat up more cap space to make it work. If they traded him now, they'd also save $18.5 million against the cap in 2023.

Yes, the dead money hits would be big in 2022 and 2023 but if they wanted to get rid of him, there is a cap incentive in doing so.

A trade for Tunsil today will be twice as expensive as he would have been two weeks ago. It will cost at least first rounder and some change IMO. Or at least that’s the opening salvo from Houston.

Exactly right and this is why they should have kept Collins. Maybe an injury on another team would have gotten us a 3rd or 2nd round pick for Collins - instead of nothing.
