Athlon Sports had Connor Williams ranked as their 1 OT in the last 2 years

Mainly because as a Guard he was as nasty as a young Larry Allen, and Connor Williams is rated highly as a Tackle, so I would rather have two players in their most natural and strong position, versus shifting them and experimenting, especially with the running game we have.

I agree and definitely wouldn't object to that lineup. I thought I remembered Collins having some issues with leverage and bend inside, but I could be mistaken.

La'el has always felt OT was his natural position and he looks like a young Erik Williams at RT. At OG he looked uncomfortable and just flashed his strength at times. At RT he had issues with missing his punch but got better later in the season. Coach Alexander doesn't even teach the punch technique.

To be honest with you it was an out of sight out of mind thing for me. I didn't have as much time this year to dive into the draft (first child came last August), so outside of the guys linked to us in the 1st Round I didn't pay as much attention.

I also assume since he wasn't a name heavily linked to us, and was considered in that late 1st-early 2nd range, that many just didn't think of him as an option at 19 or 50. That happens every year to some degree, we typically gravitate towards the guys slotted somewhere around our picks even though it rarely plays out the way the mock drafts project.

Maybe we viewed him as an early 2nd rounder and didn't expect him to fall to 50. Or maybe he was the last OL left worth anything. There was just a big run on OL.

Everything sounds so great now and we got a top 10 talent at 50, but why haven't I heard anyone talk about this guy for the past few months when all I heard about was Nelson, Wynn, Hernandez, Daniels, Price? I'm not trying to hate but I'm trying to understand why this guy fell so far and didn't seem popular here but now everyone is calling him a complete steal.

Cause we weren't looking at OT and people were not considering him an OG. McGlinchey wasn't on the radar either He was highly rated by NFLDS, Zierlein and others. The thing is he was rated in the 20-30 range so we had our eyes on higher prospects. Him falling to the middle second is a coup.

So do you think we still only view him as a OT?

The knee thing scares me, I don't think he had surgery. Not sure how it gets 100% healthy without surgery. Hope it holds up...

You must be new to Cowboys fan forums.

Most everyone thought he was an OT that would be gone in the 1st. Broaddus mentioned him a few weeks ago that he was a guy being overlooked since he could also play OG but he too thought that he would be gone by the mid-late first round and would be a possible trade down target.

Nice to read.

But how’s he graded as a Guard since that’s where he will be for us.

We definitely needed an answer on the line. And his ability to play Tackle may be needed if Tyron Smith continues his rapid deterioration.

Just from seeing him the past couple of years run blocking is his strong point, which should fit right in at guard.

Not remotely. I just think we fans did not anticipate the transition. most people had their hearts set on Vea. The OL we were anticipating Hernandez, Daniels, Wynn and other interior OL. Personally I thought there would be a run on OL -like there always is- and none would be left by 50. Him falling was a nice bonus. finding OL talent is difficult.

McShay said last year he would have been a top 15 pick and next year he would have been a top 10 pick.

The Cowboys flat out STOLE him at 50.
The Dallas Police Department are investigating the Cowboys for this theft of Williams. Goodell has already suspended him for 6 games as it is conduct that is detrimental to the shield. Williams wants to appeal but RB Elliot have told him it is a waste of time.

He is exactly what I said over and over that they were likely to do if they drafted an OL. An OT that can play OG now but kick back out to OT if needed.

This year was definitely the lowest his stock could have been, which is interesting that he would choose to come out but then again after having a knee scare I don't blame him.

Yes, I like that you knew enough to call it a knee "scare" and not something more serious. As I understand it, it was merely a sprain and not something more serious or far reaching than that. That, in itself, should rightly make his recovery much less complicated than it would be otherwise. He says he's 100% now. He should have a great opportunity to re-condition himself and be in good playing shape in time for TC and the regular season.

It was a sprain, not a tear. That's not nearly as serious as a tear. The recovery is much less demanding than it would be otherwise. Not to worry.

For me, I was more focused on the interior players you mentioned. At pick #19, or in a trade down to the bottom of round one. And based on mock drafts and projections, Williams was listed as the #2 offensive tackle on the board. I expected him to go somewhere between 15 and 25 at the latest.

Between those factors, I never expected him to be available for the Cowboys, much less at pick #50.
