...yeah, that guy just would'nt shut up about the millions being paid Williams...with all of Austin's past inconsistency he surely seems to have jumped on a bandwagon that's set to have the wheels snap off...

...pitiful part is, i work with a guy like that and sometimes i just want to tell mr. know it all to just shut the #### up!

...they are heaping some unrealistic expectations on Austin imo...a small consensus/knee jerk opinion that suddenly Austin is better than Roy is beginning to take hold in a negative way...the solution to offensive woes is rarely that simple...look at Arizona vs. Indy a few weeks ago...even with the great Fitzgerald and Boldin they got stomped...there is no magic bullet that suddenly turns an offense into the Vikings circa 1998...it takes 11 men executing in unison on a consistent basis...

...i think Miles and Williams are interchangeable at X, Z and Y...and they need to be, it only gives the offense greater variability and effectiveness...

Amazig how nobody has comented on this thread.

Irvin brings up great points. Basically he says that the X receiver in the NFL is typically the deep-threat guy, while the Z receiver (i.e. the split end on the TE side) plays the intermediate/over the middle game.

He also plays a Werder clip where Werder thinks this may be a problem for Miles Austin who is mainly a deep threat guy. But Irvin the ngoes on to say that when he played the Cowboys flipped it with great success; that while he/Irvin played the X receiver role, he was the intermediate/over the middle guy and Harper, who played the Z, was the deep-threat. What made it work was the TE running the outs to clear hte middle.

As far as the currnet Cowboys team goes, Irvin thinks it can work if they execute a similar setup as the 90s Cowboys, where Roy Williams plays the X as the intermediate/over the middle guy while Austin plays the Z as the deep threat. But Miles Austin also adds some flexibility because he can go over the middle also.

All in all, these are great points, and it's now up to Garrett to make it work. The pieces are in place, finally.

Michael is a genius ... but then I'm biased. I love their show. I can't get it at work because my job has the ESPN streamer blocked. Anybody know a local radio link to by pass the ESPN link?

I personally think he has the best balance of all our RB's. He's strong enough to push the pile and has the speed/quickness to turn the corner. One can make a strong argument based on the times he has actually run the ball that he maybe our best RB overall.

...But when you have morons like Kiley in the background, who was shut down several times by Michael and Nate, screaming" Roy has to do this because he makes 45 millions, Roy hasn't gone over the middle ( when it's OBVIOUS he has several times ) " that does nothing but feed into a perception that completely full of crap.

I think Kevin is just playing his role on the show. It works well. I don't think he's "married" to all of the things he says. I think he says some things to create dialogue between him and Mike. That's part of talk radio. Don't be so hard on the sidekick:)

Superb post. There is only one thing that I do not see happening based on the offensive scheme which Garrett has implemented through the first five games. I doubt that we'll see Crayton in the slot very much if we do not deviate very much from having Witten and Bennett/Phillips on the field in addition to Roy Williams and Miles Austin lining up out wide. If they pull Cricket off the field, sure; but if the fullback is involved in the play, no.

Trudat. What bothers me about the negative comments on Austin is the "he's inconsistent" label. He has had the opportunity to be consistent. I just don't see how you can label him that way when he barely get any plays run his way. Last week was the first time he had a real chance. If Mile is inconsistent, then RW11 is a no-show based on his time with the Boys.

It's painfully obvious listening to this that Jason Garrett is a horrible offensive coordinator.

Kiley actually knows the game... He was at least in an NFL camp and was a good LB in college. He's just a tool on the radio to generate discussion, I think.

Werder, on the other hand, is a moron who proved here that he doesn't understand the game at all. I have no doubt that what he said here isn't at all what Jason or whoever told him. He simply got confused... And then of course ran with it like it's fact.

When he's still calling him "Austin Miles" it sure seems like it.

One of my prerequisites would be to at least get the player's name right.

Maybe I'm oversimplifying, but I don't see a "problem" with having another weapon that opponents need worry about.

I never heard anyone say that Roy Williams couldn't play the Z position - one he seems ideally suited for.

I also never heard anyone mention that Crayton would be the player who would be removed from the starting lineup - just like he was last season when Roy Williams arrived.

But one thing that does concern me is the team's failure to generate internal competition for jobs.

Under Wade Phillips, it looks to be nearly impossible for a 'starter' to lose reps once the season starts, no matter how much the person behind them has earned increased playing time.

They did it last season with the Ellis/Spencer situation and it seems like they're doing the same thing with Austin/Crayton and to a certain degree Barber/Choice.

I don't want to jump to conclusions before seeing how they actually handle this situation, but again, I don't think having another offensive weapon is a problem.

Now if they can manage to get Bennett more focused and involved, they'd really have something.

I agree. And I don't know if anyone's mentioned it already but I think another similar trait that Choice shares with Emmitt is their uncanny vision.

Both runners seem to have an uncanny knack for finding open space and getting the most out of each carry.

I don't think he runs that much like Emmitt. But that's only subjective. He does fall forward and he does make people barely miss or just get unclean hits on him. He does bounce off a lot of hits, runs thru arm tackles, and gets yardage. Not much else to do but break more long runs. Neither he or Emmitt had breakaway speed.

It's too early to call Felix injury prone. Emmitt was out some although not as much as Felix was last year. But he'd miss a game or two here and there. Not often. But the question does linger on Barber and Jones about injuries. And there are players who just don't seem to get injured enough to miss games. Give Choice another few years before labeling him one way or another. At least he appears to have a few years in him to have a look see.
