Austin Has Broken Out

Fellow Zoners ...The time many of us had hoped has arrived. Miles Austin now has a pro game. His sideline route for a long gain ,ending close to the goal ,will now give apposing D cordinators much concern... Miles absolutely baited the poor cornerback ,knowing the back was playing his body, and lulled and then accelerated for the catch. It absolutely ozzed of confidence and pro ability...Gentleman we now have another playmaker to the team, and Pat Crayton may be wearing the star for his last year... Austin has broken out, and won't be looking back.........

Why would Crayton be wearing the star for his last year? It would be a stupid move to let him go.

I've been saying Austin has the potential to be a good #1 for awhile now.

But he still has a long way to go. On that post route that Romo threw him (that the defender knocked away) Austin never made any kind of outside fake before running the post. It was 1 on 1, and if he can get that CB to turn his hips just a little it would have created separation and might have been a TD.

He still needs work on his route running.

I was thinking the same thing a lil more separation and he would have had him.

I also saw instances of receivers (clearly) running the wrong routes. There is only so much that Romo and Garrett can do. These guys need to be aggressive, get open, and run the right routes.

Romo covered up the INT by saying that it was his fault, but my money is on TO running the wrong route on that play. No way that TO and Witten should have been that close together in the end zone. TO drew 3 extra defenders near Witten, and hence the INT.

I agree and would say both Romo and Owens fault on that play. You are right you never have 2 targets running the same rout as was the case with Witten and TO but then Romo should have thrown it away considering how many defenders we in the area. Main thing for me is yes we made mistakes and yet overcame our mistake to win the game that to me is what top teams do.

Whats key, for all receivers with talent, is confidence.

Hes about 6'3, 220, and just blazing fast.

You give this guy some confidence and he could be bigtime.

This is a case of why you develop players fellas.

I thought that the city had broken out in a huge rash... you know, like a mass attack of eczema... I thought I was reading about biblical retribution...

Speaking Stanback.....did he even play last night?

Let's give Miles another game or two before we say he's broken out.

You're absolutely right... let's remember "I have promises to keep, and Miles to go before I sleep"...

This is Austin's 3rd season & he's finally beginning to show his WR skills. There's still room for improvement but some of that happens as he gets more snaps on the field. But, he's good a got position coach & you better believe TO is taking him in hand as well. The better WR TO has opposite him, the more opportunities TO will have to make big plays in prime time. I just loved the way TO ran down Felix & ensured no body touched him. Also love the way TO brought down the Packer who intercepted Romo's pass; if TO hadn't, believe it very likely the Packers could have got a TD. TO shown in this game while he was elected as one of the Cowboys offensive captains.

Let's take it easy on expectations for Austin. He's progressing quite well, but even he himself is keeping it real. Defenders were keying on Owens and other targets, so he should be able to make some plays as long as Romo can get him the ball.

True. I would have loved to see Romo just throw it away on that play. We left a lot of points on the field, and the game shouldn't have even been this close (similar to last week against Philly). He needs to stop throwing red zone INTs. He did it in preseason also, and this needs to be corrected now.

My fear is that sooner or later, these types of errant throws will catch up with us, and we'll lose as a result.

I want to see what Sam Hurd can do when he gets back or did Austin take the #3 job.

Even before the season started, the general feeling was that Austin was slightly ahead of Hurd. I think with his performance last night that he keeps getting the chance to prove it. He's just faster and can get open. If he keeps catching the ball then Crayton jr. moves down the depth chart. :D

Austin is still walking with a noticable limp. It'll be interesting to see what he can do when he's healthy.

We will see I am high on Hurd IDK once hurd gets in there it may be different.

I think Romo and the passing game as a whole was not hitting on all cylinders last night and they made mistake but again everyone is going to make mistakes but good teams and players overcome them and Romo did just that. Would I like to see Romo a bit more careful yes but I don’t want him to lose the aggressiveness he plays with because in my view that aggressiveness that can lead to mistakes is the same aggressiveness that allows him to be the top QB he is. What I love about Romo is he shakes off his mistakes and comes right back at like nothing happened.

Ceiling is high on him, IMHO...He's just getting back from his recovery so he should even improve on his burst, speed and route running with each passing game.

Someone send out a search party for Crayton, still MIA

i saw the title and my heart just about skipped a beat.

i read it as Austin having something broken was out of action.

I don't see Crayton as a viable two and he's been perceived as a 3 for some time. I think this is about right. In fact he might be a better 4. Austin isn't a 1. He's not a 2. Not yet. Maybe never. He's a 4 now and that's where he should be. If he keeps getting open on go and stop and go routes he will have a place on this team due to being opposite TO with Witten underneath and in the seams. I call that a supportive role. TG was a 2. I don't see Austin getting to that level of play.

Please! Terry Glenn was no #2. He was a #1! You guys seem to quickly forget the past and all the great passes Glenn caught. He ran by guys at will. We had two #1's when TG was here. Austin has done nothing but show that he's ready for primetime this year in both the preseason and regular. He must have worked his butt off like reported during the off season, because he's catching all the balls that are catchable this year. He had the 3 job already if he hadn't got his knee hurt. What more can you want from a guy that has only had this short amount of time to perform already. You can call him whatever you want, but he's shown he's has all the tools thus far to be whatever he wants if he still keeps giving it up!!!

lol I was going to make fun of the title "Austin has broken out" by saying "I didn't know he was in prison".

Lame joke aside, I agree with the OP. Based on his performances during the preseason and last night, I think we've seen a breakthrough for Austin.

Wow, the guy is just beginning to scratch the surface on that talent. He's 6'3 and 215 pounds with 4.4 speed, wowers.

Now can we put away the silly "drops" issue?

It doesn't hurt that Romo put both passes on the money. But hey, he didn't drop them so that is progress!

As I've said in the past, when you have a QB as accurate as Romo, you don't necessarily need all-world receivers (although it doesn't hurt). Brady had been doing it for years.
