He was a sack machine at CO as they lined him up all over the field. I think they drafted him to play corner. It will be interesting to see if RM can use his talents for timely blitzes here and there. I remember Bobby Taylor gave this offense fits back in the day with those blitzes.

They might allow him to gain several pounds without putting him at undue risk of slowing down.

He appears sturdy enough and owns sufficient speed to support more weight with no problem.

People worry too much about size and old school beliefs.

6-1, 202 is fine for a SS. The league has been drifting away from the hulking, big, 6-1, 225lb bruiser safeties and playing guys at both FS and SS that can both cover, etc.

If Awuzie and Woods give us our starting safeties for the next 7-8 years, fine by me.

YES YES YES
thank you

Was just reading on the mothership where BB was asked if Awusie is our future at SS. Brian replied that's where he would play him.
So I looked him up on the roster, he's listed at 6'1" and #202. Surely not right ?
Hes a frickin corner, let him play where he was drafted to play and an injured rookie to boot. Dont ruin another high draft pick by trying to make him what he's not.
Thoughts ...

Awuzie replaced Heath for about 9 snaps the last time he played.

Woods has only played in 3 Safety sets (i.e. With Heath, not replacing him).

If you look at Awuzie and Woods, Awuzie looks like the Safety and Woods looks like the CB.

Finding players that can function like Safety but also cover WRs in man is a great asset in the modern NFL.

The Cowboys have used a lot of 3 Safety sets the past few years and the 4th Safety even plays some snaps in most games.

This year it's Woods as #3 and Frazier as #4.

Last year is was Wilcox as #3 and Heath as #4.

Think about how often you saw Wilcox/Heath in 2016 and Woods/Frazier in 2017 and you'll realize that multiple Safeties are needed.

Thumper type Safeties are going extinct. Several have moved to LB in recent years.

Basically you're going to see more hybrid Safety-Corners in the future and more players whose role changes based on base/Nickel/Dime etc..

He can play both. At a high level imo. I had him as my 6th best CB in the 2017 crop. 9 spots above Jourdan Lewis. Versatility is part of the reason why. All that said, i'd try to keep him at CB.

I wanted to draft him with the Cowboys first round pick. He was their pick in my mock.

He was a very solid overall player in college.

My concern with him playing safety is his tackling ability. One of the knock on him during the draft was that he was an inconsistent tackler. As a SS, you can't be a bad tackler.

Probably better than Heath at this point.

Take a look at the height and weight of Woods, the other player playing in Heath's stead...he's even lighter.

I didn't think he would make it to 60. A lot of people sleeping on him. Jourdan Lewis seems to be the guy everybody was/is excited about. Chidobe is that guy for me. The only knock I had on him was lack of interceptions.

He was not flashy but he was very consistent. It's possible that some orher DBs had higher ceilings but I don't think any had a higher floor if that makes sense.

I thought the Eagles were going to nab him but they took a chance on Sidney Jones and his Achilles.

Sounds like the coaches are just filling holes due to injuries and they believe he’s a better overall player than somebody like Frazier.

At SS I believe I’d rather have Frazier out there as far as a “Thumper” is concerned but for just coverage duties one has to believe Cheetoes gets the nod..

Something to do with trying to shut down Phillies intermediate and dink and dunk passing game...

Correct me if Im wrong, but hasn't Woods been playing deep safety most of the time when he has been in ? I get the idea of using these hybrid guys as TE covers etc. But how about letting them get a year under their belt to adjust to the NFL. Cause it sure as **** has not been beneficial to Jones' progress.
If you want a 3rd or 4th safety - draft a 3rd or 4th safety.
Woods may be a good 3rd FS, too small for SS. And eventually rise up at FS to become a starter - that remains to be seen. Again 4 or 5 prosects this year who are ideal SS candidates - just pick one and stop this nonsense.

keep him at the position you drafted him for. These conversion projects are lame. I'm sure people thought we'd be getting something special when super athlete byron jones was converted from corner to safety, but we didn't. Expecting Awuzie to play two positions is a surefire way to send him down the halls of mediocrity. He needs to learn and let his instincts cater to one position.

One of Awuzie's strengths was his versatility at the next level. The Cowboys are using him accordingly. What's the problem? His health is a much bigger issue.

The 6’1” 225 guys are actually playing LB now.
