Bryan Broaddus said it best the other day, when he mentioned that the cowboys aren't practicing in pads enough, and too much in shorts.

Then, remember wade said, I may have to play regulars more in final preseason game, if I dont think the players arent ready.

Gee, is wade that silly, and he cant see that the players arent ready. Even romo said, that we need to have some type of signal, (the missed pickup by felix) in big crowd noise. Not once, did the players look confused on offense, but multiple times.

And wade still doesnt know if cowboys need more time in game situations because they might not be ready to play by start of season.

Wade needs to quit this dilly dalling around in short stuff, thinking the players are actually learning stuff, because evidently they are not learning.

Just like randy white said the other day when players said they were tired, that Coach Landry would work the players even more.

Wade wake up, the players arent learning doing your stuff in shorts. They arent taking practice seriously, so you have to work them. So, they get it, they had better perform during the game, or you will work them even more harder in pads.

Wake up wade! :starspin

cowboyjoe, can you possibly provide a link to Broaddus exact comment(s)? There is a possibility that you are taking what he said out of context.

You're complaining about the exact opposite of what the problem is. This team started camp before everyone else and ended it after everyone else. They're broken. They're tired. They need some recovery time.

Moose Johnston said the worst his body felt, EVER, was after traing camp and that he'd need a couple weeks before he felt normal again.

Most teams did a real dress rehersal this week, meaning they were home, did a little game planning at their own facilities, simulated what it would be like for a week in regular season.

We didn't. We broke camp, got barely a day in dallas, then houston for the game. No gameplanning really, plus no real game planning. Do you really think we'll keep our base defense in the game when Houston runs a four wide set in week three like we did last night? I don't think so.

What you saw on the field last night was a tired, mentally drained, beaten down team. A team that did not get ONE day off the entire camp. They've been worked more than any other team in the league. And your answer is to beat them even more into the ground? I think not.

Some tidbits from another thread about Mosely's game analysis. Let's take a look at some interesting facts from last night.

mmillman;3519799 said:
  • Johnson caught one ball on the first drive with Terence Newman all over him and then dragged him another 5 yards.
  • Jason Witten had no chance against defensive end Antonio Smith. Witten was overwhelmed by Smith when the Cowboys tried to run the ball to the left side.
  • In the first quarter, DeMarcus Ware got pancaked by a tight end when Foster took off on an 18-yard run.
  • Did anyone else see defensive end Igor Olshansky getting blown off the ball in the first half?
Joe, do you think any of this happens to any of these players if they aren't worn out physically? I don't think so. We're talking about proven veterans that have done it year in and year out now. A corner that never hesitates to hit, the most complete tight end in the game, probably the best defensive player in the game, and our pure strength/mauler on the defensive line.

They're worn out. They need recovery time for their bodies.

i dont buy that, even nate newton said that when players complained that they were tired, nate laughed, said you guys dont really know what tired is.

Duh, did jimmy johnson over wear the players out, yes, but they knew where to go, what plays were, or they didnt play, but when jimmy had players in pads for 2 to 3 days in a row, jimmy would give the players a day off

wade does not do that;

now how really tired can u get walking around in shorts?

the players arent physically mentally ready yet, you do that by working them in pads, so they realize if they mess up, then practice will be harder in pads then in game time situations

how many times did the players look confused on offense, didnt know where to go or what tony romo was calling? How about missed block call by felix.

again, you dont get that done in shorts, has to be in game type situations in pads, even randy white said, when you practice not tackling, etc in shorts, your developing bad habits for the team

and wasnt the game bad last night, sloppy blocks, missed tackles, confusion on offense

and to futher my point, wade said, he wasnt sure, if players were ready for game situation by start of season, but he might have to play the regulars in the final preseason game against miami before
full season

so basically your telling me wade, you couldnt see on the field that the players were tired, because you gave them no day off, and your having them work through corrections in shorts isnt paying off

1. wade, your the one that didnt have players wear knee braces, and we lost columbo and kosier because of that
2. wade, your the one that had kosier at center practicing a position he has never played before, without a knee brace (something that bill parcells had players wear braces in all practices, but you didnt wade), get a clue wade
3. parcells and jimmy johnson would give the players a day of rest after 2-3 days in pads, etc, but you dont give the players any day to rest their legs wade, time you get a clue wade,
4. b broaddus said that to him, the players werent getting enough practice time in pads, due to full effort of wade to have the players practice in shorts more, sure didnt look like the players were ready were they wade?

no he is not. Broaddus loves to bag on wade phillips. He talks about it everyday, he is the guy in the media who started all this talk that the cowboys do nothing in practice.

Babe Laufenberg and steve dennis said during the week that they didnt think the cowboys were ready to go to reliant stadium and play in that environment because the texans and the crowd would be amped up.

Todd Archer also said it on the ticket during the week, that the team only spent a little time on silent counts and didnt prepare for the environment that much.

I dont know who is right or wrong. I dont know in this era if you work tired guys or backoff, I dont know if you work a veteran team to exhaustion in camp or not....I just dont know that anyone knows.

A couple of things I do know. Romo told broaddus last week that parcells would backoff compeletly as soon as he saw the guys tired and losing focus.

and I always will remember daryl johnston saying they worked hard in wichita falls and probably overworked and in the long run during the season it affected them and it was part of the reason they played poorly later on in the year.

again, I dont know who is right or wrong its just something interesting to look at. Its like jimmy johnson told randy galloway this week training camps should be run today based on your own individual team. You just have to know your team.

I think the funny thing that no one brings up is that in the last two weeks the cowboys, eagles and giants have all been beaten up and I am pretty sure none of them are utilizing their players strengths to win these games and all of us have a bunch of guys out. I think that says alot.

and coughlin runs camps just like we do he backs off, and reid runs tougher camps with a younger team.

I dont think there is a definitive answer, I just know that come september 12 the nfc east will be the most competitive and physical division in the league regardless of what happens in august.

i will try to find it buddy, from what i remember broaddus said that to him, the time that wade had the players practicing in shorts, etc on corrections, wasnt enough time in pads, getting the real work that you need, but broaddus said we will see if this works, what wade is doing in shorts, sure didnt look like it worked last night did it
something like that;

Its preseason! Get off your soap box! Wade is 9-2 in September. You know......that's the first month of the REGULAR season! The games that ACTUALLY count! How do some of you deal with the adversities in life I will never know?

Not to bag on Broaddus but he did say at the beginning of the offseason that he felt Doug Free wasn't going to pan out at LT. He sure has changed his tune about him the last few weeks. He also didn't believe in Alan Ball but quickly changed his tune when he was wrong and actually saw the guy in practice. Point is the media loves to point the finger when they are right but never own up to their faults. I think Broaddus is a good resource for real football talk but with him baggin on Wade it really detracts from his professionalism.

theebs is right that Broaddus loves to bag on Wade. Not hardcore like Jen Engel or anything close to that, but just little snide remarks all the time.

At least with Broaddus, it might be his own opinion and he isn't just kissing up to Alpha Male Galloway on the station like Mosley does. It's really funny to me how that works... It's like they're all insecure teenagers seeking his approval. About the only person who stands up to him on that front sometimes is MacMahon, like last year when we beat the Saints and shut out the Skins and Eagles and Tim said you have to admit that he deserves some credit.

But anyway, Broaddus did say the other day when they did put on the pads and hit that they looked really good and he was impressed. Maybe people should just pretend that the walkthroughs in shorts never existed, and those were days off. That would leave a higher percentage of practices in pads.

joe, it's funny how in one breath you say that the players couldn't possibly be tired (even Nate said so) and in the next criticize him for wearing them out too much. Which is it?

You have to wonder about the people who post more when we lose and than when we win.

Although there are no real excuses...this sums up the situation best. Jerry has had this group traveling around like the circus for more travel over a longer period of time than the other teams.

Having said that, they still look out of synch and flat.

The not practicing in pad enough thing is just not true. Plenty of (most?) teams practice in pads less now than before.

that is the majority of posters. Its human nature so I dont have a problem with it, I just have a problem with what people are expecting from camp and etc...in year 4.

Wade is not going to turn into mike ditka and take the team to a far away remote place and beat the hell out of them. ditka did this during the bye beofre the divisional round of the 85 playoffs, he took the team to somewhere in georgia and reran camp for them to focus since they lost their perfect season to miami a few weeks back.

that isnt going to happen. These guys lift weights and participate in team football nearly all year. In my opinion with the veteran guys we have at the skill positions there is no need to beat the crap out of them.

I will never understand why the media just doesnt accept that wade runs camps this way and that is his philosophy. I guess its just like his evaluations of players, they always bag on him initially for that and then back track.

Nobody cares if they win in preseason, it's the way the first team units are playing. The defense is getting gashed. This is a veteran team with not alot of changes, same coaching staff and this teams offense can't get out of it's own way, players lined up incorrectly, poor tackling, missed blocks, penalties, burining all your timeouts before the third quarter is over, players and quarterback on the wrong pages, running game non existant, quarterback having happy feet in the pocket. This isn't a young inexperienced team, and I realize they don't gameplan, but this team looks nothing like it did last preseason, at which they progressed in every game, this year this team is regressing every game in preseason, THAT IS AND SHOULD BE ALARMING TO FANS!!!!

This team is heading into a hornets nest on September 12 against the Commanders and they are nowhere ready to meet that challenge by the way they're playing.

regrssing each week could also be an indicator that the team is sick and tired of camp and that focus is starting to go.

The texans spent last week practicing in houston, no traveling or anything just focused on getting better from the saints game, in which by the way they were manhandled.

Being at home and having two weeks to get rejuvanated I imagine is the exact thing this team needs.

It's a different era. We don't have the 'run yourself into the ground mentality' anymore, which in some ways is a good thing. I'm an athletic trainer, and I've seen a marked shift in the overall mentality of training camps now. When you see guys dying of heat stroke, concussions on the rise, and the number of guys who get season ending injuries in camp, it changes your approach.

And like you said, different teams run their camps differently. Philly works a lot in pads, but I haven't seen them light anybody up so far, and they have some injuries. Dallas is very young in some areas, and a little long in the tooth in others. It's showing. The last two games, the effort from the younger guys has been better than the vets. Not surprised. Many of them are still trying to prove themselves, on top of having more energy.

Bottom line is, you wear your team out, they won't perform, whether it be now or during the season. And yes, players need days off, no matter what they're doing. Okay, going in shorts doesn't exactly drain you physically, but it's still a day where you have to go to work. We all need days off, to get away from work or school, give our brains and bodies a rest. Sitting in class as a student isn't physically demanding, yet if you did it seven days a week for five weeks straight, you'd be dying for a day off, especially if you knew you had another four to five months of this staring you in the face.

If you're looking for someone to blame, blame Jerry. He's the one taking his team all over the country trying to market them. He's the one scheduling consecutive two-a-days on weekends trying to sell more t-shirts. And at this point, I'll bet everyone is worn out, from the players to the coaches, to the trainers and managers.

I think it's a matter of quality over quantity. Did we really need 12 two-a-days? Or did we need fewer practices that were maybe a little longer and more focused or intense or physical? Were there any times during these practices where the Cowboys just got to have fun?

It seemed like a contradiction of sorts. Practice more, with the idea of getting better, but not go as hard. I assume that was to try to avoid injury and burnout. Didn't really seem to work. I just know this team wants really nothing to do with the preseason anymore. Hopefully, a couple of weeks in Dallas, in their homes and in their beds, and they'll get past it and turn it on in the regular season.

This is camp cupcake compared to Jimmy Johnson's and Parcells camps and it shows, tired from what, standing around and plenty of walkthroughs, this team is NOT in game shape, they're gased after one series, with hand on hips... And I think having camps and travel all over the place doesn't help.

Great post. Too bad it will go unheeded because of what Jimmy did!!1!

You're dead on about the mental fatigue of the never ending routine being the problem rather than the physical fatigue. I don't see why more people don't get that.

I agree with you on Jerry, too. I get really, really nervous when he starts pulling out the "But in 1993 we had a preseason game on the moon, therefore travel doesn't hurt anything" logic.

no one runs camp like jimmy, you simply cant do that. Jimmy johnson this week said himself that he would not a veteran team in camp the way he did, he said he did because the team was so young and wanted to build a physical edge of toughness.

and by the way, I think jimmy ran the camp accordingly his last two years in miami and they got beat as bad as any playoff team I have ever seen giving up 62 points at home to Tom Coughlins jacksonville team.

You just cant bring 100 players to camp and kill them anymore and with all the ota stuff there is no need to.
