B Broaddus said it best, Cowboys not practicing in pads enough!

If he knew what he was talking about, he'd be employed by an NFL team. He became a sports journalist because he couldn't get a job as a scout. NFL teams have effectively said that this guy isn't good enough to be a scout. Personally, I don't think you should give his opinion any more weight than other people in the media or knowledgeable fans.

The one thing he does have, like others in the media, is access to the coaches and players. If he thinks the team is going to do something, it's probably because he has some special knowledge of what the coaches might be doing.

Pretty much. Broaddus has been wrong more times than he's been right from my recollection.

I love Nate. My ex-offensive line coach ( R.I.P. coach Lawrence ) was his teammate at F.A.M.U. Having said that, Nate sometimes falls into the trap that all of us fall to when we get to a certain age. The trap of: " oh, if you think this is hard, you should have seen it back in my days "... He's not the only one either.

Don't want to diminish the grueling training camps that Jimmah Jenius ran, but let's be realistic about them too. The team back then was much younger, players and coaches weren't better informed and while they did practice under harsher circumstances, they had up to 90 or 100 players in camp, not the 80 limit they have right now. Believe you me, those 15 to 20 extra players do make a difference when it comes to drill time..

thats true, my main point is this;
you can win with camps like 49ers ran, soft camp, or camps like jimmy johnson ran in 90's, but you have to get across to the players, either you pay attention and get down what im trying to teach you, or we will go into pads and i will work your little rear ends off so u get it

its like tom landry was have been said to say;
when players complained how tired they were, then landry realized that they were physically up to par and mentally, so landry worked the players harder

the players have to get into their mind that, ok, either i pay attention and give it my all, or i will be worked harder in practice

why, because most of these players are being paid an average after 4 years, 900,000 or more to about 1.8 million a year, just average players,

try to get that kind of job that pays that much a year, you cant find a job like that, players are given a ton of money to perform, etc...

i understand that, but where i agree with broaddus, just like some areas,
i might agree with you theogt or hostile or DCfanatic, the stuff that
broaddus says about team not working enough in pads, and not getting
proper attention level in shorts, i agree with,

i dont agree with everything like broaddus say, or even say brad sham

but some things i agree with,

i believe that our camp is too soft in some areas,

just like i feel that kosier shouldnt have in any way play at center,
we all saw where kosier said he had never played center before, but
wade says he did, wade is either misinformed on several areas, or
doesnt know what he is talking about in some areas either

i didnt agree on some things that tom landry did, or even jimmy johnson

i liked them both, dont get me wrong, no one is perfect

but i do believe that this team needs to be tougher and wade needs to be tougher on the players too, but when you work the players, they need a day of rest after so many days, to rest their legs and to have fresh legs

just like when ware was given a few days off after he got hurt in san diego game last year, we saw results in saints game

players need rest now and then to get their legs back under them, but you have to work the players too so they know you run a tough camp, and wont let you get away with things

Hey, I totally get that and agree with you that you take pieces from every source that you agree with and form your own opinion. There are things that Broaddus says that make sense and I agree with, quite often. But I was referring to your statement that because he's a former scout, his word is essentially gospel.

no, i didnt mean his word was total gospel, what i do is like you just said, take parts from every source, totally agree with that

i take stuff from brad sham, smoaky, broaddus, brady tinker, randy white, drew pearson, nate newton, etc....

:)

I prefer to hear it from former players, fairly recent ones. After that former coaches (of course you do not often get much from them). As has been pointed out if Broaddus was as good as some people claim he would be employed by a NFL team. He does seem to have good access so I take what he says in that context with some respect; but his own opinion really means no more then most of the other mediots.

It's a different era. We don't have the 'run yourself into the ground mentality' anymore, which in some ways is a good thing. I'm an athletic trainer, and I've seen a marked shift in the overall mentality of training camps now. When you see guys dying of heat stroke, concussions on the rise, and the number of guys who get season ending injuries in camp, it changes your approach.

And like you said, different teams run their camps differently. Philly works a lot in pads, but I haven't seen them light anybody up so far, and they have some injuries. Dallas is very young in some areas, and a little long in the tooth in others. It's showing. The last two games, the effort from the younger guys has been better than the vets. Not surprised. Many of them are still trying to prove themselves, on top of having more energy.

Bottom line is, you wear your team out, they won't perform, whether it be now or during the season. And yes, players need days off, no matter what they're doing. Okay, going in shorts doesn't exactly drain you physically, but it's still a day where you have to go to work. We all need days off, to get away from work or school, give our brains and bodies a rest. Sitting in class as a student isn't physically demanding, yet if you did it seven days a week for five weeks straight, you'd be dying for a day off, especially if you knew you had another four to five months of this staring you in the face.

If you're looking for someone to blame, blame Jerry. He's the one taking his team all over the country trying to market them. He's the one scheduling consecutive two-a-days on weekends trying to sell more t-shirts. And at this point, I'll bet everyone is worn out, from the players to the coaches, to the trainers and managers.

I think it's a matter of quality over quantity. Did we really need 12 two-a-days? Or did we need fewer practices that were maybe a little longer and more focused or intense or physical? Were there any times during these practices where the Cowboys just got to have fun?

It seemed like a contradiction of sorts. Practice more, with the idea of getting better, but not go as hard. I assume that was to try to avoid injury and burnout. Didn't really seem to work. I just know this team wants really nothing to do with the preseason anymore. Hopefully, a couple of weeks in Dallas, in their homes and in their beds, and they'll get past it and turn it on in the regular season.

the thing that gets me is that these PRO ATHLETES

in their prime

they should in great shape their recovery time miminial

plus get paid bucko bucks

and its there own fault for not being in shape

or the coaches

when I played college even high school Basketball - I mean after practice every day - it was run the stairs we had 3 flights - in college it back an forth down the court - sure you got winded or sore but we got over it - mimial recovery time

plus the should be praticing in the heat

Camp Cup Cakers

IMO

Its preseason! Get off your soap box! Wade is 9-2 in September. You know......that's the first month of the REGULAR season! The games that ACTUALLY count! How do some of you deal with the adversities in life I will never know?

Outstanding post!!! :hammer:

I hear "Don't worry, we'll be better when Kosier is back because he's actually the guy who makes the line calls".

Without a hint of concern that you have a center who has been in the league going on 9 years with over 100 career starts who still can't make line calls.

I think a lot had to do with the schedule. They were FIRST team to training camp first of all. In San Antonio for a few days then to Ohio. Back to San Antonio and then a game at Arlington. Then you go to Oxnard for a week and then take a train ride to San Diego. Leave and go back to Oxnard for a few days and then training camp ends on Friday. SATURDAY you play what is supposed to be a "dress rehearsal " game. NONE of Jimmy Johnson's teams or Tom Landry's teams did that much traveling during training camp. They wouldn't have allowed it. I think Phillips should have told Jerry the negatives of doing just what he did. Jerry went crazy and went overboard when he seen the dollar signs on this one I think.

If they would have been in pads pretty much full-time, we would have seen more injuries. They were beat up from all the travel let alone the training camp. AT first I was mad that the bye week was so early but it might be a God send that we get one this early with the team obviously lacking effort both mentally and physically. Lets hope getting these players stationary will help them freshen up and get their legs and their minds back focused.

Broadus has been an NFL insider....and has a knowledge of the game that is far superior to a Watkins or Galloway or Cowlishaw

He earned scouting/drafting positions with multiple teams.

He's also Cowboys-centric so he knows a ton more than national guys who can barely name half of Dallas' players.

He is mortal of course but I put his opinion far above most.

Bryan Broaddus said it best the other day, when he mentioned that the cowboys aren't practicing in pads enough, and too much in shorts.

Then, remember wade said, I may have to play regulars more in final preseason game, if I dont think the players arent ready.

Gee, is wade that silly, and he cant see that the players arent ready. Even romo said, that we need to have some type of signal, (the missed pickup by felix) in big crowd noise. Not once, did the players look confused on offense, but multiple times.

And wade still doesnt know if cowboys need more time in game situations because they might not be ready to play by start of season.

Wade needs to quit this dilly dalling around in short stuff, thinking the players are actually learning stuff, because evidently they are not learning.

Just like randy white said the other day when players said they were tired, that Coach Landry would work the players even more.

Wade wake up, the players arent learning doing your stuff in shorts. They arent taking practice seriously, so you have to work them. So, they get it, they had better perform during the game, or you will work them even more harder in pads.

Wake up wade! :starspin

I honestly think stuff like this is just an excuse. In the 80's and early 90's nobody ran easier training camps than the Niners under Walsh and Seifert, and they didnt perform like we did this preseason.

theebs is right that Broaddus loves to bag on Wade. Not hardcore like Jen Engel or anything close to that, but just little snide remarks all the time.

joe, it's funny how in one breath you say that the players couldn't possibly be tired (even Nate said so) and in the next criticize him for wearing them out too much. Which is it?

You have to wonder about the people who post more when we lose and than when we win.

CL, its a mixture, first the Head Coach should know his team; his players by now what they can do and cant do.

Let me ask you this question CL and you can see where im going;
Didnt wade say that Kosier has played center before, (but Kosier said that he never played center, only OT and OG on offensive line)?

Is that a head coach that knows his players. So, going on what wade thought, we played Kosier at center, then he sprains his knee (without knee brace on), so immediately after we have lost Columbo & Kosier to knee issues, wade reinstalls knee braces.

Shouldnt the players, especially Kosier from not having played center at all in his career, have his knee brace on?

Another question CL, we all know and you should too, that wade didnt work the players at all in pads the last week in oxnard. Not once, but the players come out flat in houston game, dont practice in crowd noise.

Why is it that after the fact, wade then gets the players ready.

Remember last year, after tampa bay game, wade didnt use the run blitz defense enough because he didnt want to get players hurt, so we had to play catch up 2nd week of season on run blitz defense, so we didnt spend enough time on pass coverage. What happened in giants game at our home stadium? Because of lack of practice on pass coverage, the giants beat us. Then, we play catch up on that following week.

Why is it, that Romo says, we should have a signal on blitz in a loud crowd stadium, so error that happened, when felix didnt hear the call will be ready.

Isnt the head coach suppose to see that and get the team ready for all scenarios? And not wait?

joe, it's funny how in one breath you say that the players couldn't possibly be tired (even Nate said so) and in the next criticize him for wearing them out too much. Which is it?

Now, to your question you asked me CL. its a mixture, first the head coach has to know his team, their limits, etc... You can win, with any style that you use, if you use it correctly. Like the Cowboys in 90's with jimmy johnson hard camp, or noll with steelers in 70's hard camp, or walsh with 49ers soft camp.

You have to know, when to work your players and when to pull or back off. Thats the head coaches job. Players do need rest to recooperate their legs, but you as head coach have to get them ready, whatever way u do it.

You have to let them know, your the boss, and they had better toe the line, or their will be heck to answer for in next practice. Now one more question CL, last preseason game before texans, we were flat again, somewhat right. So, what does wade do. give the players the whole week off without no pads or no heavy hitting. So, were the players ready and up for that game CL?

My point i am trying to make is like broaddus said, the players look like their paying attention when in pads and getting work, but they look sloppy when in shorts etc, because their not worked hard, and players know its like a day off. You cant treat these players with easy soft training, you have to work them, and make them toe the mark. Sure, when you do 2 days arow in pads or whatever, you have to give them a day off to recooperate their tired legs. But you still work them the next time.

When, wade gives them all this time off in shorts, its like being at a candy store for the players, because to some of them, its dont worry, just enjoy yourself, wade wont do nothing, so dont worry if you mess up or not paying attention.

the main problem that i see with wade and the players, wade wants to be buddy buddy with the players, a family type style, where wade is pappa, but wade doesnt want to carry the big stick on the players when he should. You cant do that as a head coach, you have to carry the big stick when you have to and get on the players, not coddle them, like wade did last week in oxnard.

remember one game cl, when we lost in arizona, and wade gave the players the day off on monday, demarcus ware said so, and we all saw how sloppy the cowboys played in that arizona game, even whole offensive line except for flozell said they played a bad game.

you have to hold players accountable and work the dallas cowboys players. Time off for the dallas cowboys players doesnt work,

"He should stick to being a professional scout -- oh wait, no one will hire him."

This.

I appreciate the guy's insight on some things, but he's scouting for ESPN.
