Gee,....it just hit me. You know, there really are more w.r's in this league besides Roy Williams, Anquan Boldin, and Chad Johnson. What if there were a team who recently signed TWO free agent w.r's and drafted one very high last season. They did this even though they have one of the very best in the league right now. This same team is also said to be looking to pick up another first round pick, near the bottom of the first, they need a Q.B, and they need one NOW! Carolina is said to covet Brian Brohm, Possibly even Chad Henne. They need their own first but would love to pick up another near the bottom of the round. Jake is DONE, Carr never was, and Moore is more of a developmental/ backup type. They are in a major rebuilding mode. They just signed DJ Hackett and Mushin Muhammed, also drafted Jarrett at the bottom of the 1st last year I believe. If im Jerry im calling Carolina on draft day when pick 28 comes up, IF Brohm is still on the board. Pick 28, the 6th we got from Miami in exchange for Steve Smith. Explosive speed and R A C ability. 28 years old. Yeah, this would be a NOW move, but if this season isnt the time to make a NOW move I dont know when that time is!!!

I'd love to have Steve Smith on the team.

He's "Brash" but so was Michael Irvin (for the ignorant out there, no I'm not comparing SS's ability to Irvin's ability as a WR. Only their attitudes).

Imagine Running Glenn and TO deep, Witten short over the middle, and SS running a post... how the hell you gonna cover that? Go ahead and play cover 2, leaving your safeties one on one with TO and Glenn, we'll hit SS over the middle. What's that? You dropped your MLB deep enough to cover the post? Ok, Witten, here's a 15 yard completion for you.

Oh now you're worried about Witten up short? Pump fake 'em and hit SS on the post. What's that? The safety is cheating inside? Pump the post and hit TO or Glenn down the sidelines for the TD.

Plus, as you said, SS isn't a one trick pony. Get the ball in his hands and he can get some RAC.

Just have to keep him healthy.

This is very unlikely. Carolina is trying to win now. They aren't trading the 28 year old cornerstone of their franchise (at least on offense) for the 28th pick in the draft.

Carolina could go QB, but I don't think they're THAT desperate for one.

Jake Delhomme was playing excellent football last year before he went out with the elbow injury.

If we make a trade with Carolina, it'll be the #43 and their first next year for the 28 IMO..

I'd love it, but no way their giving up Steve for a late first.

.........I understand what your saying BUT every team is trying to win now. Thing is, regardless of what a team says in public, some teams KNOW they arent gonna win now. I believe Carolina is one of them. They have no viable QB. They arent the dregs of the NFL, but if the Panthers dont do something right now, they could end up being in that forever 8-8 mode. Not good enuff to do anything worth mentioning, not bad enuff to get top tier draft picks. Bad place to be. Besides, lets say they did draft a QB this year, by the time that guy is groomed and they put a team around him, Smith would already be on the downside of his career. I truly believe timing is everything in the NFL.

For the record........Im ALL FOR trading for a guy like Roy Williams or Anquan Boldin. I would be elated. My question is........WHAT makes those two trade scenarios possible, but a Steve Smith trade impossible? Do Detroit and Arizona care less about winning? Does Carolina care more? I dont think so.

And I DO fully understand this trade in all probability wont happen. Just saying, if im Jerry Jones when 22 comes up and im on the clock im MAKING THAT CALL to Carolina. Why not? Worst thing they can do is say NO. No trade will ever happen unless someone takes the first step. Timid doesnt go very far in this world.

Yea, we would have to be really quiet about that because unless we offer both of our 1st rounders, Washington and Philly would outbid us. I would offer our two 1st round picks for Steve Smith and their 2nd round pick. In fact, I would offer that for either Boldin or Roy. I do believe we need impact players, and we probably won't have eight draft picks by the end of the draft. I see us trading up a couple of times (not in the 1st round) and come away with 5-6 players. There isn't a lot of space on our roster, so why waste picks that would end up getting cut.

Steve Smith re-signed with Carolina less than a year ago.

And if he's traded, Carolina gets $7.5 million of dead money and the team that gets him will pay a $6 mil roster bonus and $1.75 million salary.

Dallas doesn't have $7.75 million...

Contracts can always be restructured, but anyways, I don't see him being traded. In fact, I don't see us trading for a receiver, unless we trade both 1st rounders, and get the WR and a 2nd round pick back.

There are more than these receivers that we could conceivably go after:

Anquan Boldin
Chad Johnson
Steve Smith
Roy Williams

You guys ever thought of:

Torry Holt
T.J. Houshmanzadeh
Andre Johnson
Lee Evans
Deion Branch
Laveranues Coles

It's understandable that you'd want some big name receiver to pair and groom behind Terrell Owens, but a couple of the aforementioned players can play along with him and be a stop-gap until we can get our hands on a Franchise receiver.

Andre Johnson is 28 and I think is either in the last year or two years to go on his contract. He is a home-run threat every time he touches the ball and has produced with sub-par QB's. Johnson is still in the age where he can be around for the next five years and still play at a high level.

Coles wants out of New York. He has the speed to make it down field and he can play on a second-tier level next to Owens. Never was a great #1 target but he doesn't need to be here.

Lee Evans isn't perceived as the next Bills receiver since Andre Reed. He does; however, possess game breaking ability and can spread the field along Owens. He can also take some pressure off of Witten.

Torry Holt will add a new dimension to the passing game. It will make it virtually indefensible if Holt, Witten, Owens, and Glenn. Four consistent receiving threats and a one-two threat at the running back position opens things up for Romo.

Houshmanzadeh is just another big receiving target for Romo to throw at. It will take some heat off of Owens but Owens can contribute on his own even if he is threatened. Besides, he is a Pro Bowl receiver next to one of the elite receivers in the league.

Deion Branch is a Super Bowl MVP and has shown he can be a primary target. He won't need to be if he comes to Dallas. He'd be a solid #2 and offers SB experience to a very young team that doesn't have any.

Torry Holt - Too old, and injury prone
T.J. Houshmanzadeh - Are you kidding me? Cinci would probably want our 2008 and 2009 draft picks (yea, all the picks)
Andre Johnson - I would love to get him, but they won't trade him. They just got Schaub, and they have no other viable WRs.
Lee Evans - He is a very good WR, and an excellent deep threat, but there is no WR in this draft that can replace him, and plus, they are looking to get help for him, not trade him.
Deion Branch - I'm not that impressed with him, but he would be a nice addition for a lower draft pick, definitely not a first rounder.
Laveranues Coles - I think NY decided to pay him, so I'm not sure on how unhappy he is now.

We should know by now that age may play a role, but that won't completely turn off a player to a team needing some "Wow," such as the Cowboys.

You could probably have former 1st round pick Robert Meachem (I believe we were interested in him anyway) for a second day pick. He couldn't even get on the field much last year. If you think about how well Colston and how relatively well Copper and Henderson played alongside him, he could become very expendable very quickly.

I wouldn't mind having Greg Jennings from Green Bay or even having Donald Driver.

I'm guessing that if our bottom line is production and production now, at least in our three major impact spots, then we can't let age or injuries be our driving methodology behind it. If that were the case, all we would be looking at is R. Williams and A. Boldin.

If we're looking for consistency and a base to build around, the door for other players opens up. There are plenty of good receivers in the league we can pair next to Owens. That is what we are wanting to do.

But we are also wanting to have a nucleus for Romo when Owens leaves. We can begin developing that via the Draft or other means of acquisition.

The "Wow" mentality we are in is also a "Now" mentality. We want big game and we want it now.

I recall a similar course back in 2004. Then again, we weren't in the age of Parcells.

Very doubtful this would happen, and Carolina has given no signs that it is even possible. Plus he is locked up to a contract anyway......no chance.

Although I would absolutely love Steve Smith, he is not leaving Carolina. Trust me, he is the end-all of everything that is Carolina Panther football. He has carried this team for years and without him, they would be picking at the beginning of the draft every year.

Teams can't make bonus money already paid disappear though which means a big cap hit for the team trading the player away.
