Back down to Earth

I think that's a great idea. They should keep it at that number.

I’m a big fan of the expanded practice squads too Plus in NFL terms these guys come cheap. The minimum NFL salary for a regular roster player this year is $610,000. The practice squad guys start at $9200 a week, with veterans starting at about $14,000 a week. It costs Jerry more money than that to run his boat.

I think our FO gets the talent data from watching our players practice. Everybody looks great in practice. We fool ourselves and let substandard players "linger" with hopes that they will develop. GM Jerry is too soft and always wants to be "one of the guys" . There is no fear like in the Parcells era.

The team had no real post-season success with Parcells and his supposed fear. In today’s NFL, ‘fear’ is not even an option anymore with guaranteed contracts and unions and rules. Plus, you think these muscular players are afraid of some coach? Coaches can cut a player and some team will pick up that player. Fear doesn’t work.

You ever work in an an atmosphere of fear? Not fun and I wouldn’t wish that upon the players.

Preseason wins/losses shouldn't bring anyone up/down. Few starters and no specific game plan for the opponent by either team.

The first two real games - on the road against Brady and Herbert - should be good indicators as to the state of this new defense.

The OP would have been thinking the 1989 Cowboys were SB bound based on their undefeated preseason.

Unfortunate that anyone has any emotional upheaval or elation over preseason wins & losses.

Drink the kool-ade, believe the hype....I'm guilty this year. Pre-season losses are good for me personally as it brings me back to earth. As far as one of my faults is I'm always saying "you can't put that guy on the practice squad, he won't survive the cut and he'll be grabbed. " But in reality no one wants these players. And if 14 of the 15 guys you cut make it to the practice squad that's pretty good.
guilty this year? we are all guilty every year....Jerry has the magic marketing wand....he sells it every year, his hype machine is always good....

Best post by far on 'Cowboys Zone' during this training camp & preseason.

LOL! Yeah let's definitely freak out about our preseason record.

Remember the 2008 preseason 4-0 Lions? Went 0-16 in the regular season.
Remember the 2017 preseason 4-0 Browns? Went 0-16 in the regular season.

I think those are the only 2 examples I need to put down.

You know how you win in the preseason? By finding some young players who can play, and by letting the vets get a cup of coffee so they're ready for the season. And by developing guys.

73 posts since 2004 and you choose one this dumb as the 74th?

What the heck are you talking about? What do preseason game wins or loses have to do with anything? Do you not understand they are evaluating talent rather than trying to win a game in the preseason? Why does your evaluation of the team vary with the final score of a preseason game? You haven't been drinking the kool-aid, you've been drinking the dumb commentary-ade.

Similarly, the Bills went to 4 straight SBs despite going 1-15 in preseason those 4 years.

Parcells, talked about buying the groceries, but the best ingredients still need a good cook. Coaching matters. Highly paid grown men, can be lazy, whiny, confrontational, etc. A wise coach can maneuver through all of that because of the goal. The staff knows player tendencies, and put them in the best position to win. Leadership is more than using F-bombs. Knowing when to agitate a player, praise a player and discipline a player takes wisdom. A coach needs to also know how to deal with officials, during game time. Finesse the front office, and use the media.

Pre season has always been about the individual more so than the team. I watch the games and look at individual guys out there trying to earn spots on teams but with so few starters playing there is not much to get excited or disappointed about.

People actually think preseason games wins and losses are signs of the season to come?
In some ways....yes. we pretty much already know the starters and most #2s. Some people like seeing rooks get some plays...and the rest fighting for remaining spots.

Im optimistic...

But I need to see wins.

The OL depth is shaky at C and RT/LT.

DT seems to be a worry.

Need better QB depth.

I think all 3 coordinators are strong coaches.

Geoege could be a DC too.
