Back up LT

After they just extended him for big $?

Not going to happen.

Collins & Smith will be your starting OT's.

They'll draft a guy... Probably in the 4th or 5th rounds... Maybe two guys. They'll sign a veteran and that will be that.

Well, that isn't good. Collins struggled mightily at times this year.

He's could be a terrific guard. He'll probably never be more than an adequate tackle.

This is one of the needs going into the offseason. The problems where do you find a quality backup LT? There probably arent 20 truely starting caliber LT's in the NFL, and when you factor in there are 64 starting OT jobs in the NFL, it makes finding a quality backup for Smith a near impossible task. If you are looking at it via FA, the Byron Bells ( players with marginal starting experience) are probably the best you are going to get.

The Eagles are doing fine with Halapoulivaati Vaitai a 5th round pick in the 2016 draft. It's called coaching and player development. You can't really invest major cap space and premium picks on backup players. Coaches have to coach them up.

Draft an OT early and play him or La'el at LG until Tyron gets injured then move the draft pick to LT.

They started Flozell at OG initially.
l.p. problem is that free agency comes before the draft. They should have played Green the final game. He was good in two starts in 2016 and terrible in one start in 2017. Which one was a fluke? He was been active for 14 games which is longer than he has stayed healthy before.

He has to be solid, Smiths back issue has progressed to a point where he's excused from practices...its not going to get better miraculously

At this point we don't even know what his back issue is or if it can be corrected through surgery.

Many thought Lawrence wouldn't play again after two back surgeries.

If the Cowboys' brain trust doesn't think Smith can be productive in '18 then yeah, you draft one early. If they think he's going to be a productive player again, then you look towards the middle rounds.

The Green question is a puzzler. I hope more info comes out about him during the offseason.

Why the drop off in the '17 start?

All of us would like to know.

They was some question about his hip possibly limiting him but it seemed like he was just short-setting to me.

You’re prob right

It's a top priority that the front office will most likelytry to cheapskate there way out of.

We either need to draft a guard that can be our Ron Leary and then use MArtin as the swing tackle or we need to draft another swing tackle.

Or.. Spend some money in FA.

Our OL is our #1 strength on this team so DO NOT start trying to dumpster dive in that area. Keep it a strength.

I don't feel great about both my starting tackles having back issues,,, speaking 1st person,, ha.. just saying Hey Jerry,, we have a franchise investment due here.

I'd re-sign Bell.

That doesn't preclude us from drafting a guy but it does give us a moderately serviceable swing option if the draft doesn't fall like we want it to

Do you remember Coopers terms?

i hope it is for backup, but i suspect the backup needs to start most of the games.
1st round pick to me.
Offense falls apart when TSMith is out

Our 2018 Swing Tackle is a FA yet, its likely a veteran that is overpaid right now and cut for cap room. Dallas will have the room to give the guy more than the minimum but less than a starters salary.

I think they draft a OT but in the 4th or later, I don't see them spending a premium draft pick on a player that will likely be blocked for their entire first contract.

Exactly.....if you draft for back-ups you end up with busts

It was like that awful Special Teams draft....... the Horror

Doug Free was a 4th rounder.

Unless someone form the Cowboy hierarchy comes out and says Tyron ain't playing next season, I'd consider spending one of the 3 4th rounders this team is going to have on an OT.

To spend a 1st or 2nd rounder on a OT to just let him (probably) sit on the bench in a "just for emergency" situation is not the best use of available resources, especially when a DT, a LB and a WR are needed more.

I basically agree with this but IF an OT esp one who has experience on the left side is your highest rated player when you pick then you must consider him be it R1 or R5. I'd rather spend a R1 or R2 on a WR, 3DT, S or cover LB.

That's the better option although get your pocket book out. I'd rather get a starter in FA and move Collins to G. I'd train Cooper to be a G/C. We've been very lucky at C injury wise.
