Back up LT

Where are the McQuistan brothers when you need them?

Exactly.....if you draft for back-ups you end up with busts

It was like that awful Special Teams draft....... the Horror

Yeah, I was just talking about that with RB Sherman Williams, the RB who was drafted in the second round that year to be a back up.

It wasn't a long conversation though, he was my Uber driver and I was only going a couple of miles.

I basically agree with this but IF an OT esp one who has experience on the left side is your highest rated player when you pick then you must consider him be it R1 or R5. I'd rather spend a R1 or R2 on a WR, 3DT, S or cover LB.

You have to consider it, but in round one you have much bigger needs like WR, S, LB, etc. I have to the think the Cowboys would go with a player rated slightly lower at a position of need than draft a guy who will likely be on the bench for four years and then walk, ala Marty B.

Then again, you may have a guy that can play OG and then slide out to OT like XWalker said, in that situation I can definitely see it. I still think WR or LB is our first round pick though.

You don't put a guy like that on the bench. He still has to earn a starter's role though. You don't draft a T in R1 unless you have plans to eventually, and generally quickly, starting them. And there is no way to depend on who starts where. Too many variables esp injuries. There are reasons why you take the highest guy on your board within reason.

But this whole argument is hypothetical. We likely aren't going to draft a tackle but one of the other positions I've noted.

This is one of the needs going into the offseason. The problems where do you find a quality backup LT? There probably arent 20 truely starting caliber LT's in the NFL, and when you factor in there are 64 starting OT jobs in the NFL, it makes finding a quality backup for Smith a near impossible task. If you are looking at it via FA, the Byron Bells ( players with marginal starting experience) are probably the best you are going to get.

Sorry, but we are going to need a new LT, not a backup. I dont see Smith holding up past possibly another year. I would have no problem using another first round pick on a guard or tackle. I see them moving Martin over to LT once Smith is toast.

unless some body wants to play the fool, Coop is worth a couple 100 G more to retain.

Coop will get 3-4 mill. He got 2 mill in 2017 and had his best season. Not s good enough season to get anything long term

Bell got 2 mill this year. Likely similar next.

It's a top priority that the front office will most likelytry to cheapskate there way out of.

We either need to draft a guard that can be our Ron Leary and then use MArtin as the swing tackle or we need to draft another swing tackle.

Or.. Spend some money in FA.

Our OL is our #1 strength on this team so DO NOT start trying to dumpster dive in that area. Keep it a strength.

I don't always agree with you, but you are spot on regarding this issue.

If you draft based on need you are setting yourself up to fail.

Here is your short list for UFA Tackles.
Nate Solder
Greg Robinson
Chris Clark
Breno Giacomini
Donald Stephenson
Garry Gilliam
Byron Bell

so ya, I would say that Tackle.. period.. should be considered highly in the draft.

Lol Byron bell

The Cowboys need many things.
LB
OT
WR

Should be a player available in the first three rounds when they draft to find someone to fit in.

I think its going to be pretty interesting on how fans respond to this draft, esp the first pick.
Honestly, I don't think outside of kicker, that the pick will be that polarizing.
OT
DT
LB
S
WR
QB
As long as its the BPA, I might actually step out on a limb, and predict low volatility here... lol
