Back Up QB

Wrong.

Dak was thrown to the wolves as a rookie, and Dak shown brighter than the brightest star in the sky.

DiNucci struggled badly. I wouldn't bother with keeping him unless you're going to keep him on the practice squad.

As for Gilbert, he played very well against a much better and experienced Steelers team that is pretty good on both sides of the ball. Garrett Gilbert deserves credit for almost pulling off the upset, especially since he played very well. I would definitely bring Garrett Gilbert back as Dak's backup QB.

Dak was also from the SEC and probably wouldn't have been a 4th round guy if he didn't have that dui and didn't he get into a fight and get beat up? Probably had some character concerns.

They liked Garrett Gilbert enough to sign him to a two year deal. He's under contract for this season. Let him compete with a UDFA pickup . My personal choice - Brady White. Big brain. limited physical tool box, stupid production. Just like our OC.

Honestly, I think Dalton is coming back unless some team offers him a legit chance to start which I don't see happening. Stephen even said he'd love to have him but Dak is their priority right now. Gilbert and Ben are developmental projects at best.

Several thoughts on backup QB position:
  • I have never been a fan of throwing a lot of cap space at a backup. Especially when you’re cap space is already an issue. I like either Gilbert, DiNucci or some other rookie or young QB that’s inexpensive with some upside as the backup.
  • Regarding Gilbert: I think our fans were so starved for some decent QB play when Gilbert played fairly well against Pitt, he became way overrated. Yes he had a decent game against the Steelers. But I guarantee you the Steelers had little to no game film or prep on Gilbert. Give an NFL defensive coordinator time to prepare for him, and I’m afraid the Cinderella slipper doesn’t fit as well. There’s a reason he’s never landed anywhere by the time he’s 30.
  • I’ve usually been a fan of the Patriots’ approach to backup QBs. Draft a mid round guy every other year and see if they can be developed into something. Either as a trade or if you’re lucky, as a future starter. You won’t hit on all of them but you never know when you find a Jimmy Garoppolo type than can yield good trade value.
  • IMO, the Andy Dalton boat has sailed. He will be either a short term starter somewhere or an overpriced backup somewhere, but he won’t be here.
He was not a starter because the teams he played for gave him almost no chance at starting. He was generally on practice squads. When given the chance he dominated the AAF. How is there no film on him? There were 8 games of recent film before the Steelers game. The reason he never landed anywhere (and he's 29) is because mindless GMs gave him no chance.

Gilbert finally got a chance with a QB competition in the week leading up to the Steelers game. His teammates spoke highly of him and even rallied behind him. He was poised in the pocket most of the game with accurate throws. And that was behind a line that was even worse than what Dak had, with little preparation. The Steelers had the best record in the NFL, but the refs stole the game from us. Even my diehard Steelers friends admitted that to me, and we've been at odds for 20+ years.

Way overrated? Maybe in the minds of the cancerous CZ. I know not. He could easily be a starter in the NFL. If Dak gets paid to start, Gilbert should absolutely be the backup... to say the least.

GG will likely get his chance in camp, to seize the number 2 QB spot. Righfully so.He's younger and cheaper than Dalton, and is a vet. That is very key. I do not see us drafting a QB, however MM tends to like bringing in a draftee at QB to groom them. Only way we draft a QB within the first 3 rounds is if we fail to keep Dak. Watch for Mac Jones or Ehlinger in that case. I also thought GG earned the right to be here based on his performance in 2020 in a bad situation. He stood tall. It would be a mistake not to at least let him get a chance to be here again.

DiNucci didn’t have the luxury of a pro training camp, playing with a great online, the top RB in the league, and a HOF TE to start his pro career. Zeke carried the offense and the defense was good. There was a 100 QBs that could have looked good playing with that team.

I don’t know what they didn’t like about Garrett. The dude stood tall, and ran, and is a big dude. He almost beat Pitts in his first start. My guess is he’s more of a game manager and they don’t want the offense to change with the backup.
I think he could be a starter from the limited time i saw of him I like him

Bring a Vet as starter Garrett is the back up and draft Kyle Trask win win win

LOL. Sure. Whatever you say. (Rolls eyes)

That Oline was already on the decline. I had said as much since the 2015 season and got blasted for it. The 2017 - until now has proven what I said to be true.

True. Zeke did carry the Offense half of the time in 2016, but Dak was equally as good and productive, hence why Dak was the one selected as the 2016 Rookie Of The Year. Ironic how you forgot that?

The Defense in 2016 was OK, but it was the Offense who carried the team......and has continued to do so every season there after through today. Our Defense hasn't carried the team since the 2005 - 2009 seasons.

TE Jason Witten was on the downside of his career by the time Dak and Zeke showed up in 2016. Sure, Witten was still somewhat productive in 2016, but most definitely his best years were behind him as Witten decided to retire after the end of the following 2017 season in January of 2018. Sure, Witten came back in 2019 to play 2 more seasons (2020 with the Raiders), but everyone with an astute keen eye could tell his last prime good year was in 2014, 2 years before Dak and Zeke showed up.

No. There are not 100 QBs who could have looked good playing with that 2016 team. Not even close. Heck maybe 6 or 7 at the most which didn't include your beloved Romo since he was clearly not capable of getting his starter's job back after recovering from injury during that 2016 season. Let's get back to reality instead of allowing one's bleeding heart from making up stories. The truth: Dak was that good his rookie year...and has gotten better ever since.
