Backup QB doesn't matter

If Dak goes down I would hope Grier absolutely kills it and never gives up the starting position again.
Or we tank for a chance to draft a top QB.

They only matter if you're talking about 3-4 games of the season. Otherwise, you're better off playing for the draft pick if you lose your QB for a long time.

Grier has the tools, no doubt, but that doesn't mean he could be the lead dog in the NFL. It'd be interesting to see though.

you nailed it . The goat came in as a back up and won 6 super bowls and played in 9 and still going, same for the others you mentioned. Dak is not that important for this team . Grier can win . Saw him during his college career , and we saw him last night. During practice the analysts were raving about him.

Guy was a natural winner in college.

I’d love to see Grier with the number one offense. Until we do it’s hard for me to say if he could, or couldn’t, help this team win multiple games if Dak had a significant injury.

I'd like to see our No. 1 offense with the same hustle and desire that the twos and threes are playing with .. but that ain't gonna happen cause they getting PAID. It's JJ, NFL, new generation player kinda thing ..

Andy Dalton was the best backup QB the Cowboys have had since Romo. But it didn't really matter and didn't save the season 2 years ago. Backup QBs usually don't win you games, but can lose you games. All you can expect is for them to protect the ball and just do enough to keep the defense honest.

So for these reasons I'm not too concerned with backup QB at the moment.

when dalton took over the cowboys under dak were already like 1-4 or 2-3 ( and were losing against the Giants when Dak got hurt) and the OL never rallied behind Dalton . he never had a chance . Heck, against washington the OL abandoned him . lot of politics, bad coachinging and dak loyalists . team went nowhere. With the right coaching staff,. a back up QB can be very effective and win super bowls like. Warner. Brady , Foles etc.

From a purely playing standpoint if Dak gets injured, I can't get worked up over it.

Neither Rush or Grier would give us a snowball's chance in Hell of being relevant.

I hope the coaches keep the guy that will be the most help getting Dak ready to play each week.

I suspect that would mean Cooper Rush would be the choice.

There aren't enough good starting QBs in the NFL much less backups. Keep the guy that can help make Dak better and more productive week in and week out.
I agree if Dak goes down we are cooked.

It absolutely matters and the Cowboys don't have a good one. They haven't since Jon Kitna.

I'm not so sure Will Grier can't develop sufficiently to win a few games, if needed. Let's hope he has possibilities. Perhaps we'll see!

Totally false . Throughout the history of the nfl , Backups can be very important . Heck , the eagles won a super bowl with a back up and beat the great New England with Brady and all , just a few years ago . How soon we forget . Not to mention Dak is not a great QB as we have seen .

Lol, the 4 Horsemen I know loved that last part.

Yeah, what can a backup do? Just give it up....

I mean, look what happened to the hapless Patriots when their starter, Drew Bledsoe went down, season over, right?

Well, perhaps that isn't the best example for us to use.

Well, I think we all witnessed that disappointing Eagles season when their starting quarterback went down and they were forced to go with Foley. Sorry, I don't remember his first name, not important.

Remember that Ram team coached by Dick Vermiel. I'll bet he was sorry he came out of retirement the second Trent Green went down and they had to go with that guy from the Arena Football League. What a joke!

I can even remember when the Ravens team lost Tony Banks and was forced to use that Tampa Bay bust, Trent Dilfer. How about when Jay Schrader went down during one of Washington's games and they brought in tired old Doug Williams, another Tampa reject

Okay, so I just named 5 guys who were backups at the beginning of the season and the starting QB for the SB champs by the end of that same season.

They weren't all high dollar ex top ten picks. You had a 6th rounder and a guy that played in Arena football prior to being a backup.

Great teams do everything they can to win. They look under every rock, kick every tire, whatever cliche.

The Cowboys have had their share of experience finding talent in places that were unusual:

A military academy quarterback with a 5 year commitment

An Austrian soccer league

A college basketball team

The Olympics]

You never know. One of these young QB's might just be special.

Backups are important, indeed. I just hope we don't have to use ours, unless we're up by massive margins.

I see this comment a lot, and I find it completely off base.

The reason I find It off base is that it assumes the starting QB is out all or most of the season. If that were to happen I agree the Cowboys would likely be done, although there are plenty of examples of backups that have been very successful in that situation. Remember Dak in 2016 …?

But suppose the starting QB is only out 2-5 weeks … Having a backup that can win just a game or two can be the difference between making the playoffs or not. He just needs to be able to keep the team afloat, and when the starter is back the ship will be back on course.

What's sad? We have to rely on the Oline to protect Dak.
:hammer:I believe you took what the OP meant the wrong way. With the backups Dallas currently has (meaning they're absolutely horrible) it doesn't matter being the season will be over should any of the two have to take over.
true if season ending injury, but normal would be 1 or 2 games. They would need to win at least 1 of those.
Rush won the minnesota game, but passing he was 10 of 31 !!:omg: that wont cut it in most games. I didnt look that up though, I saw that stat
in the PS game one as they were talking about him winning that game.
