Backup QB idea...

My issue with Warner is that he still thinks he is starting material and wants to be paid like it, which we can't afford. Also, he has been terribly inconsistent the last several years and I wouldn't want to count on him for more than a game or two and at his price that just isn't worth it.

And no way does Arizona want to lose this guy. I don't think they are even close to being sold on Leinart yet. They would never give him up for a guy like Chris Simms, who is essentially another Leinart - someone with potential who hasn't really proven JACK SQUAT.

Lastly,.....if Simms couldnt beat Oklahoma, I sure dont think he has much of a chance against the Giants when the cold cold winds of December start to blow..... Truth is,....there really isnt anyone of quality out there right now. Doesnt look like there will be either. Thats a big reason why I think that a trade of some sort might be the only realistic answer. Either that or PRAY LIKE H ELL Romo stays safe....:)

And Romo couldn't get recruited by a top college nor could he get drafted. certainly ancient history like that is irrelevant.

Is there any indication Arizona wants to deal Warner?

Reminds me of the hopes to get Chad Johnson, Roy Williams, Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin. It'd be great --- but isn't possible if their teams are unwilling to unload them.

We will never know, if we dont at least ask. I really dont see anything wrong in Jerry at least Inquiring . Zona might say HECK NO, thats fine, then at least we would know. All I know is meek and mild dont get ya JACK!

I'd take Chris Simms. I like the guy and he has guts.

If Favre ends up in Tampa, Garcia would be a great option. He will be sure to ask for a release.

Garcia would be a very good fit here. He and Romo have somewhat similar games.

of course, there is the TO issue....

Honestly, Warner is that much better than Johnson?

Brad is only 2 years older and has won the more recent Superbowl. They have comparable stats, even though Brad has never had surrounding cast like Warner. I even give the edge to Brad in the lady department.

From reports, Brad has looked good at camp, knows the playbook very well and doesn't appear upset that he isn't starting. How is Warner better?

...............I dont think their stats are comparable at all. Warners best years were alot better than Johnsons best years. He had more high end years than Johnson ever did. Also,.....Warners career average is a full 10 points higher than Johnsons is. I see Johnson as a good, steady caretaker type QB, but age has robbed him of whatever armstrength he may have had. Now Warner,....he's another different animal alltogether. Warner can come in and be a caretaker, but he also has the ability to reach back and make plays if he has to. 4 years ago I would think Johnson would have been a fantastic backup, but NOW, 4 years later with limited armstrength, not so much.

Warner had a huge falloff with his arm strength leading to his release from the Rams and was misearble with the Giants when he didn't have surrounding talent. Warners best years were played with Bruce, Holt, Faulk or Boldin, Fitzgerald, Edge. Brad had over the hill McCardell, Johnson, Pittman. Warner has been on pass happy teams (Cards have to pass just to stay in the game) and surrounded by much better talent while Brad looks good in camp, settles for a backup role, has a better looking wife and has done alot with no one else around him.

...........................Wasnt a trade but the very same Kurt Warner came in for Trent Green after he was injured in preseason and went on to win a Superbowl. Doug Williams for Schroeder in Washington, Hostetler for Simms in N.Y. Thats just off the top of my head, I'll try to think of more....
So guys who started the season as backup QBs have won three total Super Bowls.

But these are not backups who were traded for before the season began. That seems like a technicality, but it's important in this instance, because you're talking about a team being willing to give a guy up and giving compensation in return.

Hostetler had been with the Giants as Simms's backup for 5 seasons when he took over for an injured Simms.

Williams had been brought in from the USFL after it folded and ended up replacing Schroeder.

Warner had been brought in by the Rams from the Arena league in 1998 and put on their NFL Europe team before taking over in 1999 when Trent Green went down.

The key is that when you're asking for a trade, you're talking about a team giving up a guy, who apparently needs to be a QB who gives you confidence that we can win the SB if our starter goes down. I still don't believe there's one out there, not who will want to be a backup anyway. In return, you have to give something up. From there it's a guess as to what you're going to have to give up to get that guy. If he's that kind of QB, no team is going to give him up for a bag of fritos. Do you want to risk (even if it's a small asking price) the chemistry of the team and the future for a guy who probably won't get do anything but possibly tread water for a few weeks?

I didn't think a backup could win the SB for us and I'm not certain I still do but with this team they might have a chance. Might be depending on rookie RBs too much but... I don't see any Earl Morrall's out there though; not backups.

And BTW........Jerry was within a whisker of Bringing Warner to Dallas once already but instead went another route. I know for a fact that there is at least one member of this board who can confirm this.

Well, done. You have infilitrated the inner circle as our mole.
Send any info you can and be careful.

Here's a popular idea: if we need a season-long replacement, anyone think Drew Bledsoe could be called out of retirement? I know he has no interest in being a backup, but with a full time open starting position and a competitive team....

Warner is for sure not the answer. I've wanted to believe in him the last few years because I really enjoyed the "Greatest Show on Turf" and hated to see it end just because Warner essentially lost it, but if you objectively watch him it's pretty bad now. He holds the ball way too long, and takes way too many sacks as a result. He fumbles a lot and throws INTs if he actually does get the pass off without getting sacked or fumbling. I thought we already went through enough of these things with Testeverde and Bledsoe.

Anyway, Warner's turnovers and such would just ruin it for the whole team for the obvious reasons of the D not getting to rest as much and field position we'd be giving up.

You need a backup who can sustain. He doesn't have to win the game for you, but he just has to keep it within reach. Warner would do the opposite. He's old and probably expensive too.

Anyone up for bringing Ryan Leaf back? :lmao:

.................Except of coarce for that fact that he,...you know,....pretty much suxxx!...:lmao2:

Another one of those strange sports myths. 3500+ yards in 4 out of the 5 seasons he was a full-time starter and a 123 to 92 TD/INT career ratio. People seem to judge him by his time on the 2006 Raiders, a season in which he was hurt half the season and played on one of the most horrific offenses in recent memory. This guy's not good enough to simply be a 2nd stringer? C'mon.

Williams had been brought in from the USFL after it folded and ended up replacing Schroeder.

I thought they signed him after Tampa let him go? The USFL had folded several years before he won the SB with Wash. I was in basic training during that time so I don't know the whole story.
