I was curious if the 0-5 record for the Cowboys with Romo out was in line with or worse than other teams when they have had to play with backup QBs.

For simplicity, I compared each teams QB to their week 1 QB and any differences were assumed to be the backup QB. All data came from pro-football-reference.com

Win Loss Win %
BUF 0 2 0.0%
CHI 0 2 0.0%
CLE 1 5 16.7%
DAL 0 5 0.0%
DET 0 1 0.0%
HOU 1 1 50.0%
IND 2 0 100.0%
NOR 0 1 0.0%
NYJ 0 1 0.0%
OAK 4 2 66.7%
PIT 2 2 50.0%
TEN 0 2 0.0%
10 24 29.4%
x Dallas 10 19 34.5

Thanks for the info. However, I thought that Carr has been the Raiders starting QB all year. McCown for Cleveland is a journeyman QB, but has been the Browns starter all year as well.

I would love to have McCown in Dallas. He's playing well.

Teams that made the playoffs in 2014 (other than Dallas) are 4-3 with their backup QB so far this year.

All other teams who have had at least one start by a backup QB were a combined 47-82 in 2014.

And here we sit at 0-5.

I have to laugh to keep from cryin.

Also with exception of the Saints and Seattle (both despite their record not teams you can really bank as a win) the other 3 teams we have faced with backup qbs are division leaders.

We have been unfortunate to lose Romo and we have been unfortunate to have a schedule that isn't kind while he was away.

Nevermind that we didn't just lose our QB. We lost the two best players on offense.

Dallas backups haven't won a game in 5 years...McGhee in 2010

There has literally been probably one good backup this year and it was Hasselbeck. I don't know if it was because it was in small doses or what but he looked like he can still play. Everyone else looked terrible.

That makes one of us. Is 96 yards the threshold?

I almost don't even want to blame that solely on him. He faced one of the best defenses in the league and his 2nd week in this system that no one can run but Romo.

Let me say I don't think Cassel is a bad backup QB...

I'm still shaking my head over the offensive game plan.

That was just an incredibly passive strategy.

I don't know that there is a good b/u in the NFL. Maybe a couple who could step in and win a couple of games over half a season. We've had some tough tough QBs and coaches to go against in this stretch.

What I find absolutely hilarious is how now everyone laments having a good b/u, but when we had one in Orton, over half the people thought it was a waste of cap space and a luxury we couldn't afford. I bet people would do some bad things for Orton to be here right about now.

I don't know how true or not that is but I will say Kitna and Orton played well enough to win. Both were solid backups.

It is true! I've heard and read it many times. McGhee won like 13-10 in 2010

Well i'll say this.......what we are doing now is nothing like what we did with Kitna and Orton. I remember solid games from them. This is a complete mess. How we are even in games is a miracle if we can't score a td.

Even Campo managed to get one win in five tries with Anthony Wright throwing to James McKnight.

Five game losing streaks aren't common.
