You knee is meant for reciprocal motion - ala an elliptical machine.

While I am sure that the elliptical machine is less damaging to the knee, I highly doubt the Creator had an elliptical machine in mind when he designed the human frame. ;)

Running is so bad for you regardless of what you wear.

The constant slamming/crushing of the cartilage that joins the femur to the tibia is violent.

I thought it was proven, or the belief is, that we were made to run? It was the way early humans caught wild animals; running after them until they exhausted. From what I understand, running barefoot or with very little padding changes that slamming/crushing you speak of.

Used them for a bit, kicked my wicked sharp shin splints. Now transitioned to Addidas minimalist shoes, it's the right mix for me right now.

I'm having the same problem. I ran today for the first time in two weeks (to let my shins heal), but I could feel the stress on my shins still. I'm ordering some Bakila LSs tonight.

Did you do anything to adjust to the barefoot style?

Hey... :) :) :)

I just threw it out there.

Sit in your chair see which way you thigh, ankle and foot wants to go.

I also think I read somewhere that the male hips are more for in and out (thrust forward and backward)

and the female hips are more flexible for the circular motion as well as the in and out(ala male)

Check their website for info on fitting them right. There is a video on their site to show you how to measure it right. I have not bought any, but the sizing seemed off that what I typically would order. Better yet, go to a store that sells them & try on a few to make sure you get a good fit. You want it to fit like a sock, not a shoe.

I bought an elliptical machine once and it hurt my knees worse than anything I've ever done. I have no idea why.

Yea, I was a pure heel-toe runner (land on heel, roll onto toes, push off), now I'm purely a toe runner (land somewhere around the ball of my foot, at the bottom of the big toe, and "pick up" my feet rather than "push off"). It's a transition that was mostly natural when going barefoot, because you'll feel a terrible amount of pain in your heels if you land on them with bare feet. Though if you're disciplined you can do it in shoes just as well, just focus on your form rather than the amount of actual running you do for a while.

I'm think that my leg pains were 90% due to my running style, which was encouraged by my shoes, rather than the shoes themselves, per se.

I think that's exactly what I'm experiencing. I bought a pair of bakilas last night. I've been running some the last few days, trying to prepare myself by concentrating on changing my form. It's a considerable change....I ran about two miles at a good pace with my normal heel strike, then slowed things down for a mile and tried running off of the balls of my feet. Noticed a lot less strain on my shins, but my calves were feeling it.

I'm 200lbs with a good build, but I have strong thighs and scrawny *** calves. This will probably be good for me, but it might take some time. My little lower legs are going to be hating it for a while. :D

There are so many different ones out there. I am not surprised by your post.

Some have this kick back on the return that will hurt more than help.

There are a few that stay true to the circular motion and return you to the loop instead of slamming you into the next circle.

I ordered a pair of Merrell Trail-Glove shoes - should be here later this week.
They are the same idea as FiveFingers, but in a more traditional shoe shape.
I am a heel striker, so I am looking forward to the change, but I know it will be awkward. I think I may run at night for a while :) .

Look at this video on pose running. I run exactly like the guy who demonstrates how NOT to run... lazy hips, foot forward (breaking), etc.

This is what I will be working on. there are articles and video's out there to teach drills you can do to help the form (look on the crossfit website under videos & search for pose running).

Pretty dead on.

I ran 3 easy miles today, alternating between my normal stride and the modified "pose" technique (or at least what I think I'm doing qualifies) every half mile. By the third mile I found myself cheating back to the pose technique when I was attempting to run in my usual manner. Pretty telling that it only took two miles for my body to figure out that the new technique was more efficient. My shins would throb during the heel strike half miles, and would cease to hurt within seconds of returning to the forefoot strike.

Absolutely amazing. I'm hoping this isn't a fluke. It was almost hard to stop....it felt great. The only reason I stopped is because I've been told to start slowly.

Bakilas came in tonight. Only complaint so far is that my big toe is proportionally bigger than the others, so while my big toe is stuffed in to the end of the shoes, the other toes are swimming around a bit. Not sure if it will effect their performance.

Test tomorrow.

It's to the point now that when I have to run to catch a bus I'm running on my toes even in my dress shoes. Once you start, it's actually hard to stop.
