Anyone tried any of the "barefoot" running shoes? (VFF, New Balance Minimus, Merrell Trail Glove) I hear there is a learning curve, but lots of folks converting to "barefoot" running. Any opinions? I am thinking of trying them out, but they are expensive!

speaking of barefoot. Ever step on one of these in the middle of the night?

I've been running in VFF "Bikila" for two years, and for me they have been great. No knee pains anymore and I can actually climb stairs with no pain. I ran a marathon last year in them, and have another planned in less than two weeks. Took about 2-3 weeks to get use to running in them. Start slow maybe about 1/2 a mile and then add each week.

Getting rid of knee pain sounds great... mine are killing me.

I'm going to be getting a pair of VFFs this week. I've been doing a mix of running, stairclimbs, P90x and Crossfit WODs for about 6-8 months, but I developed an unbearable case of shinsplints over the last month or so. It started when I added stairclimbs with a 75lb vest, but only hurt bad when I ran....sometimes I'd get 4-5 miles, sometimes I'd get a few hundred meters.

I plan on using them in some Crossfit WODs with some 400 meter runs to start out. I'll start adding some distance running after about a month or so.

I've heard they (VFF) require some dedication to re-learning how to run properly....so I'd take that as a pretty serious consideration before I give them a shot.

Yeah, I have been reading the crossfit site. They have some videos about proper running form... I think it's called "pose" running, or something like that. Check out the video clips section & look for it... there are a few clips on the site about it. I have a tendency to land on my heel, which is not good. I found a clip there that shows exercises to help you get the feel of breaking that habit.

I run in the New Balance Minimus. My calves were on fire the first week or so, but now I can run hills like it's the thing to do. You'll get good leg strength.

I would recommend using them to augment your current cardio workouts though. Going fulltime you can suffer lower extremity injuries, particularly the achilles.

I love my VFF's. I run 5 days a week, usually three with my VFFs and two with regular running shoes.

My feet have never felt better.

Hmm. Were you a MUD player? (I'm just associating your handle)

Swimming.........seriously. Your joints will thank you and the cardio is amazing.

JMO, of course.

I run in Kinvaras which while not quite barefoot shoes, are minimalistish. They have a heel drop which moves you to a mid foot strike, which is one of the essentials of the barefoot style running. You may want to try a pair. Very light and comfortable.

Used them for a bit, kicked my wicked sharp shin splints. Now transitioned to Addidas minimalist shoes, it's the right mix for me right now.

If I have nothing to do or go somewhere...I'm barefoot.

Maybe white socks...if it gets cold.

Try going places with out your shoes...

I had a guy come to my store yesterday morning wearing a suit and socks. He said he forgot his shoes at work the day before.......

Running is so bad for you regardless of what you wear.

The constant slamming/crushing of the cartilage that joins the femur to the tibia is violent.

You knee is meant for reciprocal motion - ala an elliptical machine.
