This has been a fun debate on the boards and I'm one of the biggest Baun fans on her, so thought I'd share why.

Baun
- Top 10 PFF grade of 91 as a pass rusher
- 90 PFF grade in coverage
- 49 defensive stops
- 12.5-sack, 19.5-TFL in best season
- 52 pressures
- 1.54 10 yard split (top 5 for edge in past 20 years)

Chaisson
- PFF pass rush grade of 79
- 13.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks in best season
- 35 pressures
- Elite upside - best football could be ahead of him do to young age and traits

Are any of those Top 5 “edge” players 6’-2” 238 lbs?

he's a strong side lb that can rush and I think that adds HUGE value in Nolan's defensive scene..

Bingo. I'd play him at SAM and let him rush as much as possible in 3rd down situations.

McCarthy had a similar player in Matthews, and I think that's why he likes him as we've had a video meeting with him.

If they go 3/4 I would totally be behind drafting Baun. Especially if we trade down. I think everything is on the table when it comes to improving our awful defense that made the AFC East quarterbacks and Trubisky look good.

Baun gives you more right off the bat with his versatility as an off ball LB/pass rusher but Chaisson upside could be huge. Tough, tough call for me. I would be happy with either at 17

In a 1 or the other scenario....I prefer Chaisson.
but Baun makes a ton of sense considering the multiple looks/fronts Nolan will likely use...even if we don't switch to a 3/4.
outside of the CBs we've talked about...Chaisson,Baun or Kenneth Murray could be our pick.
all 3 have a legit chance.

They've been running some games from last year lately and I've seen LSU with an eye on the guys we discuss here.

Granted I'm no scout, and it's a small sample size, but I have been watching the game for a long time.

Seems that there were too many plays where Chaisson wasnt involved in the play at all.

I'm worried he may get pushed around vs the run and have not much of an impact at all in year one.

I think they can move Baun all over while Chiasson is strictly a rush guy...and only on obvious passing downs for a while.

Braun may offer more immediate impact, where Chaisson ceiling could be all-pro level. He possesses the ideal size, length and athletic traits for the position and is just 20 years old. If it was down to these two at 17, I'm taking the gamble for the higher ceiling player.

For those saying Baun could play SAM in a 4-3, I just don't get it. He's at his best when he's rushing the passer. You are now asking him to fill the B gap and cover TE's or RB's. As far as his pass-rushing ability, the issue is going to be he'll facing NFL tackles each week who have 80 lbs and 4 inches on him. He's a good player but I would not take him at 17, especially for a 4-3 defense. You'd also be using your most valuable asset on a player who is likely sharing reps with Randy Gregory and Aldon Smith.

Now 2nd round? Sure, the risk is now worth the investment. You gamble on his talent and task the coaches to find a way to utilize his skillset.

I'm the Captain of the Edge argument, basically a 4-3 RDE and a 3-4 ROLB are the same player, but that argument loses credibility when the player is both shorter than the average Edge and weighs less than the average Edge. This isn't the TJ Watt debate again; Watt is 6'4" and 252 lbs. Dwight Freeney was only 6'1" but was 260 plus. Elvis Dumervil was that rare sub-6 footer, but he also weighed 250 plus and was drafted in the 4th round.

If he couldn’t also impact the run and cover I’d agree and say the 1st is too early but he can. I posted numbers to back that up and the scouting
reports highlight his ability of NOT being a 1 trick pony. What your describing sounds like Weaver, who I might not even take in the 2nd for the same reasons.

He’s about the same size as Matthews was as a prospect, and he can easily get to 250+ with an NFL training/diet program so no concerns there.

And yes, he’ll be facing bigger OTs like every prospect in this draft will. Good thing is there’s tape of him winning against some of the best and he also comes in with the ability to already win in multiple ways.

I like both of them, Chaisson would be an Aldon Smith type player and Baun would be more of a Clay Matthews players. Also did they list "defensive stops" for Chaisson?

I prefer Chaisson, but Baun is good too. I think Chaisson has more power

I think those are great comparisons

I couldn’t find stops for Chaisson. I’ll dig a little more and see if I can find something.
