BCS is a whacked system, although it's been 75-80% indisputable since it's 10-year inception.
My argument against a playoff would be, it would eliminate the importance of any single game. A "playoff" system instantly transforms the college football rivalry into a relic.
I'm not sure 50-75K stadiums will sellout, at premium prices, if they're playing their 2-8 homecoming, with a 9-1 record.
It also essentially makes a game like last night's UT @ TT meaningless to the loser, because you can just make it up in a tournament.
BCS IMHO is not perfect, but I'll take the "disputed" national champion every 2-3 out of 10 years, over the loss of the excitement of a Mich/OSU, USC/Oregon or UT/OU any year.
I disagree. what you have to do is get a set number of conferences. have each conference have a conference championship. have the winner go to the playoffs. So the only way to compete for the National Championship is to win your Conference Championship.....this would make the regular season rivalries even more intense and meaningful than they are now.
Right now, even though OU lost to Texas, they still have a shot to make the NC game, even if they dont play in the Big 12 Championship game.
Also, with a playoff system, Conference games become hugely important, while non-conference games really don't affect your chance to make the playoffs. Because of this, you can see more pre-Conference games between heavyweights. It would be great to see USC vs OU, Alabama vs Texas, Florida vs Penn St. all in September. We could have this with my playoff system. Plus you could bring back strength of schedule component, to make the top teams try and play better non-conference competition.
This is what HS does. My alma mater always plays a tough nondistrict schedule, against some top level 5A teams, and even if they lose, all it does is better prepare them for district. Then they try to win enough in district to make the playoffs.
I believe there are 120 D-IA schools. They could have ten 12-team Conferences. The playoffs would be a 4 week process. The 4 lowest ranked Conferences, would play in the Wild Card round (the 2 higher ranked teams get home field) with the winners of the two games making it to the final 8, the Quarterfinals (the 4 highest ranked teams get homefield)....the winners move on to the Semifinals
(neutral site: Fiesta and Sugar)....and the final two schools play for the National Championship sometime during New Year's week
(Rose). The Big 3 Bowls can rotate each year.
The week between the Quarterfinals and Semifinals, you can have 12 lesser bowl games.
The week between the Semifinals and the NC game, you can have the rest of the bowl games, the bigger named ones, like Orange, Cotton, Alamo, Holiday, Peach, and Gator....12 bowl games.
