As I contemplated the failure in Washington, Cowboy fans should be afraid very afraid. It is a fear problem.
Adrian Peterson went over 100 scrimmage yards (99 rushing), with no no.1 WR to get defenders out the box. He did have TEs. But no deep threat at all. The Cowboys offensive coaches did nothing to run the Skins out the box. So that means the offensive coaching staff and defensive coaching staff failed or was in fear in that game.
It also mean that the "I had not choice" trade for Amari Cooper may not work. That is because our coaching staff will not play call and design plays to get defenses like the Skins out the box. It also means that even though our defense is better, it does not trust its players to put an extra player in the box. That is because we do not have like in the pass SS like Green, Harris and Woodson and FS like Waters, Everett, Washington, and Williams.
Garrett and Linehan will do just what Dez said. Line Cooper up in one spot and run plays with a route tree so simple a simpleton could run it. They will not put him in motion, run the jet sweep, throw him in the slot, line him up in the backfield send him in motion, etc. The will not put a FB in the game and run call a team out the box with over stacked/unbalanced line that Harbraugh used to take the 49ers to the Super Bowl. RicoGathers would be a excellent TE which you must have to run that over staked/unbalanced run game like Vernon Davis. Your TE has to be a threat to block, catch and run. Remember Emmitt Smith ran against the box most of his career and that's why he cried in Moose's arms. Because they blocked Novacek until his neck failed, always kept a blocking TE, and slammed Moose into the last remaining 7th man and told Emmitt beat the 8th man. Micheal and Harper big WR handled the CB or cut off the S who was the 9th man in the box.
This ain't rocket science. You would think that an Ivy league student could count. 5 OL + 1 TE + 1 FB = 4 DL + 3 LB = 3 DL + 4 LB. All equals 7 on 7 football. 5 OL + 2 TE +1 FB = 4 DL + 3 LB + 1 S = 3 DL + 4 LB + 1 S. All equals 8 on 8 football. On offense it is what you do with your WR and then your TE/FB that will count. You will not die if you call 2 run plays in a row or a run play then a loop or turn in route to the RB on consecutive downs. If you did that with a running back like Elliott, you would not be behind the chains every series. But you have to at least line up to block the defense out the box with 7 on 7. In 2016 you had TEs that could block at the line of scrimmage (Witten and Swaim). Jason Witten who could block, catch, and run is gone. He was the reason you could go 2 TE and defenses who loaded the box feared as a blocker and receiver. Rico is 32 pounds heavier than Witten and has the better athletic ability. Using him as a gadget TE is stupid. If you are not going to put 292 pounds on the end of your line, just release him and trade for a TE that can be a Witten or at least a Billy Joe Dupree. In regard to the FB, what a dumb trade for a player you do not use. In fact Kevin Smith was used more. Those are the 2 reasons you can not run a team out the box.
Finally poor Amari Cooper. You have just resigned him to what Cowboy fans have yelled at the TV from 2010-2017...Throw The Ball to DEZ! He is always open! He is a Beast WR!. Because Dez could physically get open on just about every DB in the league. As his body declined, finally his physical play caught up with him . But, he was still better than every WR on the 2018 roster. Now Amari gets to line up in the same spot on every play and Cowboys fans will yell throw the ball to Coop! He is always open! He is a rare talent WR! There will be No WR motion, play design, movement, motion, jet sweep. You do not get 124 receptions and 5 carries your senior year at Alabama lining up at the same position every play. He was featured like Jerry Rice, Micheal Irvin, Sterling Sharp, and Harrison/Wayne. Garrett and Linehan creatively using Amari Cooper....NOT!
I hope this does not happen and that Garrett and Linehan have learned to count to 7 and 8, they pull out the Landry and Turner playbook to keep Cooper open, and someway find players to play the S positions like it should be played in a 4-3. However, be afraid be very afraid.
