Bears really hurting

You know what would really stink for Bears fans? If Griese comes in and does great. No, I'm not kidding. Can you imagine how much they will wonder what might have been if it hadn't taken this long?

Sort of like us last year when Romo finally got his chance.

The difference is, Romo is our future, Griese isn't theirs. They know that no matter what, they still have to address QB in 2008.

That would suck.

I think Griese is a decent QB. I would have rather seen us sign him instead of Bledsoe prior to the '05 season.

And it's usually the defense that takes the most abuse...

It's because of that monster offensive line we have. I refered to them as "a group of highly territorial hippopotami" when responding to a Cowboys article on realfootball365.com.

Their defense is amazing. They can apply pressure from everywhere. I predict no other team will score on them like we did all year. No one will run on them like we did. If not for the silly penalties on 2 or 3 Julius runs we'd have gone for over 200 yards on them. It won't happen again.

Detriot might do it this week with their aerial assault since Chicago has all those injuries. Both of their starting safeties are out, both starting CBs are out, their defensive line is wracked with injuries (including Tommie Harris) to boot.

Bears need to draft a good QB but not sure they can recognize one when he's there. But there history has never been one of valuing QBs and they've made lousy choices in McGowen (?spelling) & then Grossman.

What about Orton from Purdue, hes on the roster. Do yall think he will get a look?

Not much of one at this point. 5 will get ya 10 their top pick in 2008 will be a QB.

The Chicago Bears 2003 NFL draft.

14. Michael Haynes
22. Rex Grossman

Ouch. The draft went much better for them after that, with Tillman and Briggs selected.

They should give him a shot. Cant do much worse than Griese will do :lmao2:

Don't forget, at one point Orton was beaten out by Chad Hutchinson, but was kept instead of him because they didn't want towaste the Draft pick and they felt he had more long term upside.

I have been shocked that they've mode move at all to take a chance on another QB.

Detroit will be a good barometer. That game will be interesting.

It was a good question.

BTW, I won't be at all surprised if Grossman drops to 3rd string and Orton moves up to 2nd. It happens all the time. Teams feel "he's had his chance."

Is that correct? Chad went to Chicago and played one season in 2004. Orton was drafted in 2005 and played in 15 games before Grossman came back from injury. Jeff Blake was used as the veteran back up. Did Hutch beat out Orton in pre-season, but still get cut? Even so Orton was only a rookie that year while Hutch was in his 4th season.

From Wikipedia so grain of salt recommended.

"Hutchinson had been named as the starter for the 2005 season after Grossman suffered a severe ankle injury during the preseason, but was replaced in favor of rookie Kyle Orton after several poor preseason performances."

I believe he was the intended starter in 2005 after Grossman was hurt and he stunk out loud. So they went with Orton instead. That is why he never played a game for the Bears in 2005.

So maybe he did not truly beat out rookie Orton. He got named starter because he played the year before and the true starter Grossman got injured. He stunk in pre-season and Orton stunk a little less.

I don't really care that much. Hutch was not much of a QB. Orton did not look promising when he did play even though he was a rookie. Griese has had some good moments, but mostly looks like a journeyman. In my expert opinion, the Bears need to go shopping for a QB no matter what happens the rest of this season.

Good points. Griese might make a short term difference, but he has failed to secure a starting job in his last 5 seasons, and has only appeared in 28 games since 2002. He is 32 years old, a classic backup quarterback. The Bears need to either draft a good quarterback, and suffer while he grows into the job, or, find a current backup that can come in and be a starter.
