  • Wide receiver Cole Beasley had a good first day in pads. The defense could not stay with him in the slot. His best catch came after Romo had to throw around linebacker DeVonte Holloman. Beasley was able to adjust and make a diving catch.

So what is his secret and will he be overlooked and if so how long will he be? I don't think he's just a camp phenom but I need to see more. Will he be used more this year? If so do we add those catches to the usual quota of Romo completions or will they just take away some from the rest?

He's an interesting player for me.

Has anyone got a good enough look to see if he has added some mass to his frame?

I don't think he can add much mass and not lose what has got him into the NFL, his initial quickness.

To me, any added catches he gets will come at the expense of Jason Witten.

With some of the new talent coming in at WR, I wonder if the only keep 5 if I should be worried for Harris?
They'd have to find guys they felt comfortable with in the return game; not easy to replace a guy rated 2nd in the league in average. Also the guy is great on coverage teams too, as well as being a fairly decent playmaker when he does get chances at WR.

But feel they will keep Dez, Williams, Beasley, and Streeter...so if one of the other guys like Boyd does great, it could be dicey.

Hope not.

It's difficult to guess how many chances he will get. Dunbar could end up playing as a slot WR from what I've heard and Escobar will get a lot a snaps also. If the keep and use a FB, then that's more snaps without a slot WR. Some of those big WRs like Street, Briscoe and Boyd also look really quick off the line and could see some action in the slot if they make the team.

He doesn't need to be a secret weapon. As long as he is a reliable weapon he will help Dallas.

That is not the intended meaning here. If he does well he will be noticed quickly. I think he will do well and I wonder how they will counter him.

If you split him wide a CB can likely stay with him on a fly but he may create problems with digs, slants, outs and comebacks. But I think wide he will allow someone inside to create a mismatch.

In the slot my guess is they will have to put a slot guy on him. He is a mismatch for most safeties and LBers. This changes the front formations/personnel creating other mismatches esp with RBs on sprint outs, shoots, stabs, cuts, flat routes, wheel routes, yada.

My other worry besides him getting hurt is pressuring him on the LOS and pushing him off routes and delaying them. He may be quick enough to beat that enough to hurt the defense.

Opposing coaches already have tape on him and probably already have strategies on how to defend him. Whether those strategies work is another question. His effectiveness is tied with the whole team. Bryant, Witten, Williams, Murrary, Romo and the line all have to play well. He is going to see a lot of one-on-one coverage in the slot. He has to win those battles and be reliable.

That's the key. Anything that helps Dez get more 1 on 1 will help this offense as well. It's synergistic.

Multiple weapons create difficulty in rotating matching personnel in on defense. It's one reason there are niche players and why all-purpose players are so valuable.

They may keep six this year. Right now that's what I'm thinking but injuries often force different paths.

I always told people Beasley was a better receiver than Harris, but that said I wasn't putting Harris down. He is a fine returner, and I think he has a spot here on the team, even if he is the 5th receiver on the depth chart.

Going back to Beasley, there is nothing secret about him. A lot of teams were already doubling up on him last year, and what that should do is open things up for the rest of the offense, which should make things easier for everybody on the team.

Having players like Beasley, Escobar, and Williams evlove this year especially behind a strong offensive line and running game, will put us in a position to have an explosive offense that can make up for defensive inadequacies.

Having tape and being able to defend against someone are two completely different things. How many teams have had tape on Wes Welker? Doesn't stop him from dominating.

What's more difficult is when you are a defensive coordinator already have to compensate your game plan for Dez Bryant and Jason Witten. Now you have to compensate for DeMarco Murray, and Cole Beasley, and maybe even Williams and Escobar? That's a potential nightmare, especially if the offensive line is as good as what we hope it could be.

I think it'll be difficult to keep 6 receivers on offense, because to be honest the amount of snaps for the 4th and 5th receivers are already quite limited. The emphasis will be going long on defense, especially in the front seven.

The major battle is for that 5th spot, anyone else is probably headed to the practice squad.

They are trying to add to his skill set this year by making him a downfield threat. That way defenders can't sit on the short routes as easily. He seems to fill the role Kelvin Martin played for us in the super bowl years. A short yardage go to guy when you need the first down.
