Anyone following the NFL for a long time knows you don’t have to be a sweet little choir boy with perfect manners to be successful in the NFL. But one thing is required: YOU CANNOT BE STUPID.

The second big questionable decision and legal snafu in less than a year made by talented DE Sam Williams raises some questions about not only his character but his commitment to the team, his teammates and his family. Last year he was cited with a misdemeanor for driving his Corvette at a high rate of speed sideswiping another car and eventually wrecking his car. And while he was at Ole Miss in his college days he was suspended from the team for allegedly assaulting a woman, but was reinstated when charges were dropped.

Now, Williams’ Sunday arrest for possession of a controlled substance and unlawful carrying of a weapon is another chapter in this young man’s struggle to keep his off field behavior between the lines. And there’s little room for excuses when the Cowboys organization provides tons of off field support including counseling, ride services if impaired, even legal advice.

There are plenty of examples of great NFL players- some even Cowboys- who had some questionable off field behavior, that were somehow able to stay focused during the season or just be smart enough to pick their spots to avoid missing suspensions during the season.

Sam Williams has big time football talent. He had a really good rookie year with 4.5 sacks last year as a part time player. He was expected to have an even bigger role this year. And maybe he still can, although I would be surprised if he isn’t suspended a couple of games.

I believe in being patient with young players. You can usually fix some on-field mistakes that many young players make. But off the field? You can’t fix stupid. Williams better get serious about growing up if he wants his NFL career to be what it could be. I hope he does.
The early trend is concerning but this latest arrest didn't harm anyone. It would have been much worse if he resisted then assaulted a police officer but that didnt happen.

But yeah in the age of social media and cameras everywhere these players have to be more careful.

Yeah, I don't agree with your 'didn't harm anyone' take. He's harming himself by screwing up and messing around with drugs. NFL as Jerry Glanville stand for Not For Long...this is the reason he dropped in the draft. Dude is trouble and hopefully this latest mess will wake him up once and for all so he can make the necessary changes to get his life together.

“ unlawful carrying of a weapon” could mean he was carrying inside a bar which weapons aren’t allowed . There is several places they aren’t allowed . Basically anywhere with hard alcohol sales and Govt buildings .
If you are paying attention, I already posted about what UNLAWFUL Carrying is.

He didn’t even know until this summer how the play calls got to the field. He didn’t know players had speakers in their helmets.

I mean the guy is not a football lover and isn’t smart. He’s just really good at beating blocks.

It could have been much worse of a situation, but he definitely has to do a better job avoiding these things at all.

But look at the end of the day he got in trouble for carrying marijuana in the wrong state while in half of the u.s. its now legal and in many others decriminalized. There's been movement in Texas to also modify laws.

I may not fully understand the ins or outs of gun laws in Texas, but his charge is basically he left a gun in visible site without it being in a holster. If he put it in the center console, in the glove box, or under his seat he would have been fine. I have no idea where the gun was located in the car but it may even be plausible it slid out from under the seat. Who knows?

At the end of the day neither of these charges will be big issues for Sam Williams but he has to avoid these careless situations.

IMO, he’s in warmer water legally than you’ve laid out here. And the NFL has made it clear they have little patience for gun violations.
