FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Patriots coach Bill Belichick apologized Wednesday for the commotion surrounding his team following accusations that his club spied on the Jets during New England's season-opening victory in New York.

Belichick said he spoke with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell this week about a "videotaping procedure" during last Sunday's game and "my interpretation of the rules." "At this point, we have not been notified of the league's ruling," Belichick said in a statement. "Although it remains a league matter, I want to apologize to everyone who has been affected, most of all ownership, staff and players. Following the league's decision, I will have further comment."
At a news conference, Belichick refused to answer questions about the accusations, saying he said all he could in his statement. When pressed for a response, Belichick replied: "Are there any questions about the Chargers? Anyone want to talk about the football game?"

The Patriots play San Diego on Sunday night.

The coach's statement follows a report that the NFL is considering punishing the Patriots for spying.

ESPN.com, citing league sources, reported Tuesday that Goodell has determined the Patriots violated league rules Sunday when they videotaped defensive signals by the Jets' coaches. But the report also said the Patriots have not yet presented their case to the league.

The Web site's report said Goodell is considering severe sanctions, including docking the Patriots "multiple draft picks."

A league spokesman, however, said only that an investigation is under way. Both teams said no decision has been made.

NFL security confiscated a video camera and tape from a Patriots employee during New England's 38-14 victory. The employee was accused of aiming his camera at the Jets' defensive coaches as they signaled to players on the field.

Make them forfeit the Jets game, lose high draft picks and a hefty fine to send the message accross the league.

Like Mort said - the video camera was confiscated early in the game and likely wasn't analyzed. It didn't contribute to their thrashing of the jets, so the game should stand.

That being said, draft picks should be forfeited, a hefty fine, and a suspension of the coach, and any coaches who had knowledge of it.

It would be very fair if they suspended Bill Belichick for 5 games. If coaches are held to a higher standard, and they are found "cheating," then how would it be fair to punish Wade Wilson for 5 games and not Bill. I also think two first round draft picks should be taken away. They need to make a strong enough statement so that the NFL does not lose respect from fans. The last thing any of us want are fixed games or games with a clear advantage for one team. The "love" for the sport will be greatly diminished if this continues, regardless if it was "common practice" in the past. Ladanian Tomlinson seems to be very annoyed by the Patriots.

Considering that almost all of the teams on some level spy, I really don't care what happens. If the Pats are punished, then the others teams (probably our included) should learn to conceal that ish better to not risk losing picks.

Yeah, Belichick "misinterpreted" the rule where it explicitly states no cameras are permitted:

"The rule is that no video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches' booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game," the league said in a statement from spokesman Greg Aiello. "Clubs have specifically been reminded in the past that the videotaping of an opponent's offensive or defensive signals on the sidelines is prohibited."

Belichick resembles the southbound end of a northbound horse on this one. :yousuck:

Whoah, there Chiefsmoke. It's not like he was caught obtaining HGH inapporpriatetly in order to treat a serious medical condition! He was just cheating to win games and get post-season positioning, probably for the last several years.

I like what one talking head suggested last night......put them on probation like they do in college sports. They can play in the regular season, but not in the post season. Also go back and if it is determined that this was going on during the super Bowl years, strip them of their titles.

You dont know that.... they could have had a few signals by then and could have used them for the entire game. The video camera could have had a wireless feed going to someone's laptop or pc.

They have 5 picks in the first three rounds next year I believe...

I'm predicting a suspension of Belicheat for 2-4 games and a loss of 1-2 day one draft picks next year and maybe a fine to the team...

Lucky for Belicheat he doesn't have diabetes and erectile dysfunction or he could be gone for the year...

OK - I'll rephrase it. It is very unlikely that it contributed with any significance to the thrashing of the Jets. The coordination of that cheating would take quite a bit to get any sizeable advantage after what they had. Certainly not enough to strip them of the game.

That being said, they are still under investigation, so I am sure that the League Office is better informed to decide what effect it had on the game than any of us.

Well the cowboys better take big procautions when they play the cheaters Oct 14th

Since Wade Wilson got a 5 game suspention for steriod use for a med condition, they have to come down hard on a coach knowingly going against NFL rules
