Bell's a dark horse to be the starting LG this year. He doesn't get a lot of the attention, and he's not getting the first shot, but he's started more games in this league (72) than the other candidates (Cooper, 14 or Green, 2), and he's been more or less healthy when he's been in the lineup. If he gets in shape, just staying in the lineup might make him more valuable than either Green or Cooper, who've had their struggles staying available.

On a side note, I wonder what weight they want him to get down to. If he's 320 now. Cooper's listed as 310, and Green 314. Bell is taller than both of those guys. If he's got two more cut downs to make, he'll be pretty skinny for an NFL OL...

I don't think he's a really a dark horse, with Collins at RT, he *should* be the favorite given Cooper's past play and Green's injury history.

True Dak. After all, Free was 318lbs. Without this signing, our 'Boys would have likely been forced to spend a high draft pick on an offensive lineman instead of addressing more pressing needs on their roster. Bell would be an ideal replacement for Free. Being he's healthy again after that gruesome injury which hit the Titans' hard, he's ready to rock n roll yet once again. Our Oline will continue being the best in the league.

I don't think we signed him with the intention of him starting at tackle. I do think he's a fallback for that position, though, if neither Collins or Green can handle it.

I think he's more likely to end up starting at guard, because that's where he's been most successful, but he'll have to beat out Cooper and Green for that spot.

Ultimately, though, I think the starters will be LT Smith, LG Green, C Frederick, RG Martin, RT Collins with Bell, Cooper, Looney and Cleary as backups. I know there's a feeling around here based on his pedigree that Cooper will end up as the starting guard, but while Cooper has failed with several teams because of his health, Green stepped in and showed he could play last year ... even though his health also is his greatest obstacle. I won't be surprised, though, if Bell ends up beating both of them out for that spot, maybe by default if they keep having injury problems.

Most interesting part to me was what his moma said to him about losing the weight. That's a reality check for anyone.

Granted there was money involved, but there were health reasons also.

150K is quite the incentive for losing 40 pounds.

I'd look like Christian Bale in the Machinist if I lost 40 pounds, but for 150k I'll look like a holocaust survivor.
