The Bengals should have cut ties with Odell a while back. I actually thought they did cut him a while back. Maybe they just wanted to wait, so as to lessen the impact to their salary cap. It is not a bad move to cut him, but it is bad to cut him for the reasons they are citing. Then again maybe they don't believe his story. I seem to recall a similar situation with Quincy Carter and the Jets where QC claimed he missed time for a family thing, but it was more of a drug/mental thing. We will never know. I doubt Odell turns into a superstar no matter where he lands. He has issues he needs to work on.

The best thing about Odell:

"The signature play of his career at Georgia came in the 26-7 win over Auburn in 2003. With Georgia leading 19-0, Auburn drove down to the Georgia 2 early in the fourth quarter. On third and goal, then-Auburn quarterback Jason Campbell (now of the Washington Commanders) threw a pass, which was deflected and intercepted by Thurman. He returned it 99 yards for a touchdown."

Why do these guys continue to flush their golden ticket to the world down the toilets? I will never understand that. When you have it, grasp it and hang on for dear life.

Some things like family is more important. Some people are closer to their grandmothers than others. To expect him to be be so quick for voluntary work outs is ridic and then to cut him. I don't understand if there is no wiggle room for players to be allowed to grieve for the lost of a loved one it makes no sense.

I'm really beginning to wonder if that Bengals Organization has any idea on how to run a franchise.

To all the arrests, to the Chad Johnson fiasco, and now this......

First... it was voluntary, and second.... Thurman had called and told them he wouldn't be able to show up..... it isn't like he just disappeared.

Well we can debate all we want about Thurman and the Bengals but let's not lose sight of the fact that this is one hell of a football player.

He was an absolute STUD at Georgia and he was even better in Cincy. Remember now that he has only played one season in the NFL. Even after holding out a little, he still STARTED 15 games as a rookie. He had 148 tackles, 1 sack, FIVE ints, 9 passed defenses, and 4 forced fumbles. As a rookie! He was up (and probably should have won) for defensive rookie of the year.

Granted that the guy hasnt played in two seasons for being a knucklehead and he has to sleep in the bed he has made for himself like Packman, Chris Henry, Tank Johnson, and whatever dumb*** that fumbles his dream of playing the NFL (although I think the Bengals are wrong for releasing him).

Normally I wouldnt say this but I think signing Thurman would be a great pick-up for the Cowboys. He is a great player who plays at a position of need in the inside. He has the size, speed, and playmaking ability that this defense lacked in Akin. He also is young and would fit in the cap. And like Pacman, he knows he is on his last chance. Low risk. High return!

To me, this is simply Cincy cleaning house. They took the 1st opportunity that presented itself to cut this player without penalty. I'm not surprised. I don't think they would treat players that they wish to keep, long term, in this manner. I think they probably used this as an excuse to do what they wanted to do all along. Circumstances are very unfortunate but it is what it is. Cincy is playing hardball with all of these guys. This is what there fanchise has decided to do and I imagine they will continue to do it until they reach a point that they are satisfied with there situation.

Bengals' zero tolerance

The Cincinnati Bengals aren't playing around.

It's evident by the news Monday that Cincinnati released middle linebacker Odell Thurman. But what is surprising is that it wasn't trouble off-the-field that led to his release, according to Thurman's representative Safarrah Lawson.

Thurman was released because he missed too much time during voluntary workouts that was caused by a family issue, Lawson told ESPN.com. Thurman has been dealing with the recent passing of his grandmother, who helped raise him in Monticello, Georgia, and spent a lot of time in recent weeks with his family.

The funeral for Thurman's grandmother was May 12. The Bengals wanted him back last week, but when Thurman returned this morning, he was informed he was no longer a member of the team.

The release likely will send shockwaves through the Bengals' locker room that any indiscretion, large or small, will not be tolerated.

Thurman was reinstated by the NFL on April 21.

So let the debate begin: Where will Thurman end up next season?

So from reading this maybe they asked him to be back by the end of the week, which would be four days after the funeral, and he still didn't do it.

Just saying that I don't trust The Turd's representation of the facts.

This story may sound harsh, but they aren't releasing him for this one instance. He's been nothing but a continual headache ever since they drafted him.

I got 50 bucks says that an indiscretion by Chad Johnson will not get him any closer to the trade he wants.

The Bengals will be hugely hypocritical on this. They wanted an excuse to get rid of Thurman after drafting Rivers. This was their chance and they took it. They should have just let him go as soon as he was re-instated. This was purely a publicity stunt.

It didn't say by the "end of the week" it said "last week"...

I know it may be only a few "extra" days, but that's harsh.

Don't get me wrong, there may be more to the story than is being told, but that being said, I don't want him here.

I was thinking along the same lines, but not the Jets situation. But when the Cowboys released Quincy on what was reported on the heals of a failed drug test and Jones and Parcells said it was only that they had decided to go into a different direction.

I never heard how the greivance came out. I believe the NFLPA lost? I think that will be the question asked if a greivance is filed by Thurman.

The Bengal front office list of screw ups is very long and goes back many years. They have not done much right in the last 20 years.

I think that missing an extra week of voluntary OTAs after you bury the Grandmother who raised you is totally understandable and the Bengals making the move they did based on that is totally classless.
There may very well be more to the story, but if there is why wouldn't that be reported. The way it stands, the Bengals are deserving of their "Bungles" nick-name

Don't buy into this stuff about getting cut because the guy went to a funeral. In all likelihood, he was cut because of his past idiotic stunts AND the fact that he probably isn't a good football player.

A nut case with diminishing/no returns will soon find unemployment in any business.

Now, he and Chris Henry can drink and party all they want, or until the money runs out. Which should be soon.

They had Rivers penciled in for weakside backer. Odell was going to play Mike.

If they were just looking to get rid of Odell, they've had plenty of chances. I'm willing to bet he's in horrible shape after missing football for so long, and with no commitment to the offseason program they just decided to wash their hands clean. If he was really committed to football he would have laid off the crackpipe.

Somehow I doubt he was suspended for two years for "beer", although I'm sure that's how he's spinning it. I'm sure 99% of the NFL players kick back some beers, why aren't they getting suspended for two years?

He had one DUI that extended his already existing 4 game suspension ... but you have to violate the NFL substance abuse policy at least 3 times to get into that phase in the first place.
