Newman was our best cornerback since Deion. He was drafted kinda older (I think 26 as a rookie) and dealt with some injuries, but he was consistent and played at a Pro Bowl caliber every year. Like what happened with other Cowboys vets (Roy Williams the safety, Greg Ellis, Flozell, even Ratliff and Austin), people crucified him later in his career when he no longer played like he was in his mid-20s.

He wasn't consistent and didn't play anywhere near a Pro Bowl level in his last couple years here.. hence why he's gone.

Now, whether that is a result of poor coaching is the question.. and it looks to be that way.

You were here when the GROZ stuff was going round. It was pretty over-the-top, in the classic 'Realist' fashion. Since then, Zimmer's proven--beyond a shadow of a doubt--that that was all just a massive overreaction.

I won't even get into the TNew stuff beyond noting that he's contributing meaningful snaps to an AFC playoff team and saying that I don't believe for a second that the 'difference' for that 34 year old player is suddenly the coaching.

Sometimes a guy just needs a change of scenery to rejuvenate himself. Think that's what happened with Newman.

Not sure what to think about Newman.

Whatever they did with him it sure looks to have worked.

He got well and the front seven gets enough pressure. He's always been a good CB when healthy. And Zimmer is a pretty good DC.
