Source: Tank Johnson to join Bengals

The Cincinnati Bengals added some much-needed size on their defensive line by reaching a one-year agreement with Tank Johnson, according to a source.

For Johnson, whose career started with the Bears and most recently continued with the Cowboys, he will get a chance to go back to a more natural position along the defensive line. Johnson will play the "three-technique'' for the Bengals, giving him the chance to do some pass rush and shoot the gaps to make plays. The Cowboys tried to make him a nose tackle in their 3-4 defense the past couple of years.

The 27-year-old Johnson was a second-round choice of the Bears in 2004. He started 15 games in three seasons for the Bears. The Bears released him after his eight-game suspension for a gun violation. The Cowboys picked him up and developed him into a nose tackle over the past two seasons. One of the appealing aspects of signing with the Bengals was a chance to work with former Cowboys coach Mike Zimmer, who is in his second season as the Bengals' defensive coordinator. He runs an aggressive 4-3 defense that fits Johnson's style.

Looks like they're optimistic a return to the 4-3 will help him, and I agree that's a possibility. Same with Roy, who may be his teammate again soon... too bad it's the Bengals.

After walking off Lincoln Financial Field, saying, "I'm a free agent, baby," Tank Johnson finally has a new home.

After visiting with Cincinnati recently, Johnson signed with the Bengals on Tuesday. He is fourth free agent to leave the Cowboys this off-season, joining Chris Canty (Giants), Kevin Burnett (San Diego) and Joe Berger (Miami). I'm not sure on the terms of the deal, just that one has been struck.

The Cowboys did not make an effort to keep Johnson, who had 45 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble last season. In his two years with the Cowboys, Johnson played only OK and never seemed to buy into the responsibilities of the nose tackle in this system. In other words, he freelanced too much.

He will play with former Cowboys coordinator Mike Zimmer in Cincinnati in a 4-3 scheme, which he played his first few seasons in Chicago.

Just heard Mosely with GAC say that the bengals signed him. Good fit!

OK, does this mean that we will get a pick for him? Or has that period already passed?

Hurrah! This should mean that next year we get a 3rd round comp pick for the Canty signing! Tank leaving was worth getting a 3rd rounder for...and more!

He'll do good in that defense.

Agreed... I remember him on 06' with the Bears and next to Harris, he was a beast. He will be a good addition for them. Just didnt fit with us.

Hopefully Tank signed for enough money to qualify for the equation. With the delay in Keith Davis signing elsewhere, I was starting to getting worried.

Canty would get us a fourth-round comp pick at best, as long as he plays a reasonable amount next season.

Are there deadlines for the UFAs to sign before no Comp picks are awarded?

Adam, how much money would qualify as enough money, in your opinion with regards to Tank?

A contract over $1.5mm for the 1-year?

Good, another problem child off the team... His mouth was always bigger than his production on the field.

How on earth did Gibril Wilson get the Giants a 3rd then?

If UFAs are unsigned as of June 1, the player's previous team must give him a qualifying offer, or he won't count in the equation.

About $950,000 should be enough to qualify. Maybe less, depending on how much he plays.

Tank = no big loss.

He could have really salvaged his career in Dallas.

Instead he wanted to be just another player. Now he gets to play in Cincy. His loss.

Sorry, I was thinking Canty signed a seven-year deal for $42 million, but it was six years for $42 million. So a $7 million average COULD be enough to get a third-round pick, depending on how much he plays.
