I would think Claiborne is........Claiborne is a 3 year pro....Jones is a rookie. Claiborne is in a contract year. I think the Cowboys are going to give him every opportunity to start this year. If he doesn't.....Claiborne must've fell off tremendously.

Church plays SS on running downs... Wilcox on passing downs... playing to both of their strengths

good point, but you don't want to tip your hand...I'd rather have Wilcox...just a hunch that he will end up being better with a better supporting cast. He's just a playmaker in my opinion.

Don't underestimate Churches ability against the run. It was a bad thing... but he did lead this team in tackles for a time.

Because that means that Scandrick, Carr and Claiborne are all healthy and signed and good to go.

I think with a pass rush, our best defense lets Jones ballhawk and lets our three veteran corners play better coverage because of a much improved pass rush.

In that case, who plays SS: Church or Wilcox?

Best case is Mo plays up to his draft status. Few things could be better

I'd just love to have a secondary that didn't have glaring holes in it. If we ever have a front 7 that caused issues in the pass and running game for opposing offenses....well....if if and buts were candy and nuts.....

I want jones to start at safety first. It's a hard position to fill. If he can be the center fielder type then I'd rather he player there. Need to find out what he can do there. Wilcox would start for me over church. Though both would play in nickel.

That injury is tough to come back, mentally and physically. Claiborne will be lucky if he can run within .3 of his combine numbers. Mental part maybe tougher to come back from and Claiborne does not seem to be that mentally tough.

Jones was not a ball hawker in college. He is best in press coverage. He is admittedly weak in space. Safeties only play in space. He may have the measurements to be a good safety, but that doesn't mean it's where he can succeed his rookie year.

Church is at a point in which he only has two years left on his contract, is getting somewhat expensive for what he is, and has very little dead money involved in cutting him this year or the next.

Expect Wilcox to be given a fair competition for a starting job at SS.

I think ideally the Cowboys would want Jones to play FS, and for Carr, Scandrick, and Claiborne to play corner, with White and Patmon in depth roles.

Then I think there are times in which you could ask Jones to play corner, in case of injuries or based on match up.

There are two scenarios to look at, one is the best 4 and the other is the best 5.

I think the best 4 could very well be Carr, Scandrick, Jones, Wilcox

I also think the best 5 could be Carr, Scandrick Jones, Wilcox Church or it could be Carr Scandrick Wilcox Claiborne. Comes down to who is better Claiborne at CB this year or Wilcox and Church at safety.

Can we please stop talking about MO like he can really be of help to this defense? We are better off with him injured.

I prefer to keep Jones at CB.

Claiborne has not proven to be a consistent quality CB when healthy. Now he is coming back from a major injury which will make it even more difficult to do something that he failed to do when healthy.

Claiborne is a free agent after this season and Carr is likely to be gone after this season if not sooner.

Any issues that Wilcox has had are not really due to any physical limitation. He has been learning the position after only playing defense for 1 year in college.

Stranger things has happen but I can't see Jones playing FS this year... I don't think the front office is ready to give up on Wilcox's potential and would be foolish to bench Church's production just to put a unproven 1st round draft pick on the field.

I get that 1st round talent needs to be on the field but we can play Jones inthe slot like we did with Scandrick when he first came to the league or we can put Jones on the outside and move Scandrick back inside

From what I saw in the limited available youtube videos, Jones doesn't play well in space. He needs to have his hands on the receiver to cover. I think he's better off at corner, where he's been for the last 2 years.

I agree
Even if Mo comes back and plays great he won't be back next year. He is not a guy who will get a second contract. To me developing jones at cb is very important
To me cb is a much more important position

I'd rather have Jones at CB but I think the team will definitely play him at CB and FS both, with the decision on where he plays made late in training camp. A lot of things (including luck) will sort out who starts this year but going back to the OP, I think Wilcox goes to SS and Church to the nickel package. Church has been a great option as a UDFA playing as a serviceable starter for low salary, but on a Super Bowl team he is a backup. And I'm totally fine with that.
