Best current example for staying with the process

I think the Kubiak example is a great example to use if you're looking for a defense for keeping Jason Garrett. It's definitely the case that it sometimes takes a head coach time to build the organization he wants, and Kubiak should be commended for the job he's done in HOU. As CL rightly pointed out, there are plenty of counter examples, as well.

You just have to look at the job Garrett's doing and ask yourself if you think the guy deserves another year. Then ask yourself if there's a clear upgrade available--one significant enough that you're willing to scrap the last two years of your plan that's only partially implemented. If there is, you make a move.

It's pretty much the same process you have with players. Only, instead of having proscouts, you have Jerry Jones doing the evaluation. Merry Christmas, everybody.

These comparisons are pointless because you can always go either way. What about the coach of the team they just played on Sunday? There's continuity for you...10 years of it *Shrugs*

Let's see. Garrett inherited a team that won a playoff game the year before. Kubiak inherited a 2-14 four year old expansion team. Yeah, they won a playoff game and are playing well this year, but let's not act like every mediocre coach goes on to be great.

Garrett inherited a 1-7 squad that had given up on the season*

Houston was a rebuild job for the most part, Dallas while not a top team was at least pretty good and had a QB in place.

The unit that has been the most sloppy and had the most mental mistakes the last 5 seasons belongs to Jason Garrett as well. Even with a star QB and continuity at RB, WR and TE he cant get this guys on the same page. Where are the signs that JG is a capable coach? Kubiak paid his dues and studied behind a great coach for many seasons before getting his chance, JG was gift wrapped a job he was clearly not ready for.

Gotta admit, I laughed at this part.

That promptly went 5-3 so the talent is there for at least a 500 team and since it had made the playoffs the year before comparing that to an expansion team is dumb

He also inherited several players who had big contracts but terrible production. Davis, Barber, Colombo, and Williams all had starting roles when he took over. He had an aging middle LB core and an aging #1 CB who they likely discussed adding to the cut list. He also didn't have an decent 2nd year players to step into any legitimate roles as our 2009 draft had been so terrible.

He may not have inherited a "rebuilding" club, but it isn't like this was a great, talent-laden team that just needed a different leader.

There's a lot of truth to that but I don't think you can use it as something set in stone. For instance, if a situation arises where a coach I would love to have becomes available, you may decide less than 3 years is long enough for your current coach.

You're not going to pass on Bill Belichick because you need to give Norv Turner his full three years.

I totally agree with the bolded portion of your post. But since Belichick is not available, nor any coach approaching his caliber available, it doesn't really help solve the answer to the question should Garrett stay or should he go. I'm undecided as to whether Garrett can get it done, but as far as I am concerned, I'm not sure any of the available coaches would be an upgrade over Garrett, except maybe Billick.

I will have to agree that Hoofbite's thought process in this thread is pretty sound. I'm not sure whether Garrett should stay or go, but Hoofbite's analysis is pretty much spot on.

My guess is that Garrett gets another year. Jerry may not have admitted we were in rebuilding mode, but in Garrett's first offseason we jettisoned a lot of dead weight in the form of Gurode and company. That tells me Jerry was on board that this wasn't going to be a quick fix. But I do think Jerry is getting very damn impatient. I think it is partly a function of him getting older and knowing HIS window is closing.

What he doesn't get is that once he is dead, none of this will ultimately matter to him. Maybe he shouldn't screw it up for his kids by trying so desperately to go for the quick fix and build another dynasty over time instead.

Tom Brady said it best the other day. All the little things in the beginning of the season start becoming big things at the end. Depth and coaching really come into play later in the season. " we have the best coaches in the league".

You better make sure Garrett is the right guy. Because if he's not, then we would have just wasted precious years.

Jerry has been saying for 2 years that we should be in the playoffs. I know he talks a lot so people will fill the seats but there was talent here.

Jerry is going to say that every year. Some years he actually believes it. Other years he doesn't. :)
